DD15 still reading dork diaries

My dd turned 15 in feb. Shes a perfectly normal 15 year old and doesn't enjoy childish things. The other day though I saw her reading a Dork diaries book, is this normal for her age? If you're not aware these are books aimed at much younger children. I know she is capable of reading much more mature books than this, she reads things like Of Mice and Men, Macbeth, Christmas carol etc for school.

I haven't told her off for this I'm just very confused, why is she reading these books at her age? Aibu for thinking it's weird?

What about my post gives you the idea that I can't construct a sentence or spell properly?

Reading it.

JoDolce · 08/05/2023 15:48

Easy, comfort reading. I still enjoy doing children's colour by numbers books, it's relaxing

HeadacheEarthquake · 08/05/2023 15:49

OP cannot be serious!

And yes, it's 'per se' not 'say'🙄... how embarrassing.

When I was 15 I read Stephen King, Vladimir Nabokov, Orwell, Virginia Andrews and Anne Rice. I used to also read my Jacqueline Wilson books for comfort when I wanted to feel young and carefree again.

I used to also read Harry Potter; I reread them at uni for relaxation between tomes of mind numbing history and analysis. That's why I'm dumb now 🍷

Beezknees · 08/05/2023 15:50

I read a few of my old Famous Five books recently for the nostalgia. It was great.

I'm a bit busy raising a family to dwell on spelling

Unlike all the other mums on MN, @philomenacunky?

philomenacunky · 08/05/2023 15:22

I'd rather her read something a bit innapropriate than dumb her brain down with children's books

Seriously? She's 15yrs old. She can read whatever she wants. You're being not just ridiculous but utterly controlling.

Dear me. That's a worrying statement.

You'd rather she read something inappropriate?!

She is still a child. Please don't push her beyond her years, and definitely don't push her to be what YOU want her to be.

philomenacunky · 08/05/2023 15:56

But I'm not criticising and embarassing the other mums on MN for their spelling

Not innapropriate per say but a bit more adult/mature

Well I hope her level of literacy is better than yours!

redskylight · 08/05/2023 15:57

<Post from OP's DD> The other day I saw my mum posting on Mumsnet. Is this normal for her age? She is perfectly capable of posting on sites discussing current affairs , and serious literary topics. I'm a bit worried she is dumbing down by posting there. She's definitely losing her ability to spell and punctuate properly.

Malory towers, Enid Blyton, Harry Potter etc are great works. Dork diaries is sexist, dumbed down childish bs

Of course, Enid Blyton's works are sexism-free tomes

slowquickstep · 08/05/2023 15:58

I am 50+ and still read The Famous Five and Mallory towers

slowquickstep · 08/05/2023 15:59

Oh and the Broowns and Oor Wullie

Skodacool · 08/05/2023 16:00

I’m 74 and last year I reread Black Beauty!

Enid Blyton's books were written in the 1940s. Dork Diaries is recent and still filled with sexist bullshit

Somebodiesmother · 08/05/2023 16:02

Why would you even think about telling her off?

Fansandblankets · 08/05/2023 16:02

Not weird at all. I’d be pleased if any of mine ever picked up a book! I read/listen to about 2 books a week but none of my kids read. I find it frustrating!

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 08/05/2023 16:02

She's reading them for pleasure/as a hobby. It doesn't have to be worthwhile or meet your standards.

Where did she get the books from?

triplechocbrownie · 08/05/2023 16:02

LordEmsworth · 08/05/2023 15:18

You haven't told her off??? Why do you think that's worthy of a pat on the back?!

I'm mid 40s and still enjoy some children's books. What's your problem?

This

Greenflamesburn · 08/05/2023 16:02

Read the Percy Jackson books years ago. DD came home from school a few weeks ago with another book in the series including the Roman gods. Hell yes I read all 5 in the series. I love getting lost in my own head in a book. She's reading leave her to it.

Clementineorsatsuma · 08/05/2023 16:04

Thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 08/05/2023 16:04

Why do you give such a shit about it? You’ve two options here.

  1. continue to act like a judgmental twat and put her off reading because what her mother wants her to read is sexist, written by a sexist male or frankly, just not to her taste
  2. Allow her to read what makes her happy and continue to cultivate a love of reading

I'm pretty sure you’ll continue to do 1 because all you’ve shown yourself to be is a judgemental twat but for your daughters sake I hope you pull your head out of your arse
