DD15 still reading dork diaries

philomenacunky · 08/05/2023 15:13

My dd turned 15 in feb. Shes a perfectly normal 15 year old and doesn't enjoy childish things. The other day though I saw her reading a Dork diaries book, is this normal for her age? If you're not aware these are books aimed at much younger children. I know she is capable of reading much more mature books than this, she reads things like Of Mice and Men, Macbeth, Christmas carol etc for school.

I haven't told her off for this I'm just very confused, why is she reading these books at her age? Aibu for thinking it's weird?

I'm not "criticising" her, I'm worried for her intelligence

Jesus Christ…

I'm almost 40 OP and in amongst the weighty literary books on my bookshelf you'll also find Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, Michael Bond & Beatrix Potter. There's even a pop-up version of The Tiger Came To Tea Blush

Nothing wrong with reading something you enjoy even if it's aimed at a younger audience, especially if it's a welcome break from the heavyweight stuff she'll be reading / analysing at school.

No reading is bad or wasted reading.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 08/05/2023 16:31

I'm currently re-reading a redwall book. It's a kids book about a mouse who is a knight. I'm 40 years old.

I'm reading it for nostalgia, it's giving me nice warm comforting feelings reliving a part of my childhood. Oddly enough my brain isn't turning to mush, and one I've finished it I'll still be able to read my "adult" books.

My 15 yo DD is an avid reader, but for the last 6 months or so she's read precisely nothing for pleasure. She's finding that picking apart books for English Lit is ruining any desire she has to read. Maybe your daughter is in a similar situation and wants to read something simple to counteract school?

maryberryslayers · 08/05/2023 16:35

It's about 14 year old isn't it so not really that far off. Plus if she started the series when she was younger she probably wants to continue it.
I read Jaqueline Wilson in to my late teens. Books are personal choice, not something you can tell someone off for. Just be glad she's reading!

MaryKateDanaher · 08/05/2023 16:36

I've got a doctorate in literature and I still occasionally read some of the books I loved in my childhood. I think you sound like a bit of a twat, to be honest.

FlamingoQueen · 08/05/2023 16:37

My Dad used to tell me off for reading ‘babyish’ books. I gave up reading! Please don’t make the same mistake.

Myonlysunshine123 · 08/05/2023 16:39

I still like reading Roald Dahl books, the twits is hilarious, I'm 36!

Dis626 · 08/05/2023 16:39

YABVU I'm 41 and still sometimes read children's/ YA books!

popcornspice · 08/05/2023 16:40

omg its a book im nearly 40 and my book shelf would shock you i have the lady bird books fairy tales books none for my age all sorts not for my age at all just be lucky she reads a book some kids rather have a phone .

FourTeaFallOut · 08/05/2023 16:40

Kids enjoy a bit of nostalgia, the same as adults. The familiarity brings comfort. I know my teens walk a little slower through the living room when my youngest is watching Ninjago, sometimes they will hop on the couch with him ... just to keep him company, of course

baloosbaloos · 08/05/2023 16:41

I assume this thread is a wind-up. Extremely weird if not. OP, do you read much? Because, not to be too unkind about it, you come across as someone who doesn’t really understand how it works.

Snowtrails · 08/05/2023 16:44

It's fine OP. What are you reading atm?

Tiddlypomtiddlypom · 08/05/2023 16:44

I reread Jill’s Gymkhana not so long ago 🤷‍♀️

ladydimitrescu · 08/05/2023 16:45

Fucking hell, get a grip!! Poor kid

Needmorelego · 08/05/2023 16:46

The only thing I've never liked about The Dork Diaries is that Nikki doesn't seem like much of a "dork" to me. She's a perfectly ordinary, nice and friendly character.
How many of them have you read @philomenacunky ? I wouldn't say they are sexist.

As a former librarian I can say that it doesn't matter what teenagers read, anything is great!

DiscoBeat · 08/05/2023 16:47

Nostalgia, easy reading... absolutely no problem!
Well done for not telling her off 🙄

Vallmo47 · 08/05/2023 16:47

I’m surprised no one has called this poster a troll yet, to be honest. This is a wind up, surely.

Malory towers, Enid Blyton, Harry Potter etc are great works. Dork diaries is sexist, dumbed down childish bs

I couldn't comment in detail on the others, but Harry Potter has artistic brilliance whilst being peppered with numerous technical flaws.

I write, and as such study writing. I re-read a childhood favourite recently and was especially struck by the technical brilliance of the story telling that I had never noticed as a child.

Obviously not 50 shades level of adult but something with a bit more depth than Dork diaries would be nice. And no I don't only watch documentaries but I certainly don't watch children's shows for fun!

Her sister (a year younger) is fully capable of reading Stephen king, classics, etc while she's stuck on dork diaries

She's bot stuck on it though. That implies she isn't reading anything else or can't.

It's also utterly bonkers you even need to say you haven't told her off for this. Why on earth would you?

CallieQ · 08/05/2023 16:49

What I mean is it is great that she's reading books rather than glued to phone/screens etc
