Churchill insurance have doubled my premium

Justanothermum01 · 07/05/2023 14:26

From £550 to just under 1k.
Nothing whatsoever has changed in the last year which would affect my premium.
I’ve just out my details through a comparison website and can get the same level of insurance elsewhere for around £450 pa.
I’m actually pretty disgusted with Churchill.

All insurance companies do this. I’ve learnt always to shop around before renewing.

LordEmsworth · 07/05/2023 14:29

Disgusted? Really? You've saved money, it's taken you maybe 15 minutes. It's a marketplace, you were free to walk, and you did...

Iminthemoneylife · 07/05/2023 14:30

This is pretty standard practice.

Justanothermum01 · 07/05/2023 14:32

@LordEmsworth yes actually I am pretty disgusted! As it’s clearly blatant profiteering, they know a certain % of customers will just accept it for whatever reason so its worth their while. I’m not usually ‘anti’ big companies at all but I actually find this pretty offensive!

Well, if this is what you choose to get angry about, crack on love.

Customers have a choice, if they choose to pay a grand rather than shop around and pay £450 then that's their call.

girlfriend44 · 07/05/2023 14:39

Just phone them and say its expensive, they will.probably come up with a better offer.

I think it's quite reasonable to voice an opinion in the way OP has, most threads of MN right now will be about issues that someone will be non plussed about Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 07/05/2023 14:43

Try having your buildings insurance go up by 1000%!

jimmyhill · 07/05/2023 14:45

It's quite right to be angry about it, it penalises elderly people and those without the ability to easily shop around

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 07/05/2023 14:45

Funnily enough OP I recently moved to Churchill after my quote from Direct Line who of been with for yonks pretty much doubled. Churchill also included full break down cover too. Apparently they are the same group too.

I was disgusted

Jolenetookmyman · 07/05/2023 14:46

It's horrendous. Ours has doubled too however we were hit last year and our car was written off. However we weren't at fault, I was expecting an increase but not doubled. The comparison sites came out even higher by £100 -£200.

bluemidnightblue · 07/05/2023 14:50

I thought there was a new rule that existing customers couldn’t be charged more than new ones for car and home insurance now?

GCWorkNightmare · 07/05/2023 14:59

I always do a quote as a new customer and get them to match it. Didn’t need to this year - quote went down.

NewLeafAgain · 07/05/2023 15:00

I'm with Churchill and renewal was still the cheapest quote for the cover i wanted!
Weirdly though, the renewal stuff came through with details different to what I had in my proper documents from last year - employment status AND number of kids - not things I had changed. I don't know if either would have made a difference if I had tried to make a claim, but I made sure to read everything extremely carefully.

Blossomandbee · 07/05/2023 15:03

This is normal, although I agree it's not fair. You don't get rewarded for loyalty with insurance companies. I think they rely on people just auto renewing and not checking.
Usually if you ring them and tell them what you've been quoted elsewhere they will match it, or very closely. If not just cancel and go with the cheaper company.

This, and I thought there was meant to an end of insurance companies doing this to existing customers.

Cupcakequeen75 · 07/05/2023 15:18

Totally normal.
You should never auto renew, at a minimum you should contact the insurer and get them to review but generally shop around.

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/05/2023 15:24

My car insurance is with Churchill and was much higher than I expected. I rang them as I had better quotes from a comparison site. The Churchill advisor said that insurance had increased due to the difficulty of obtaining car parts due to the Brexit and now having to replace entire cars rather than repair. I did manage to secure a large reduction to stay with them so call them or switch insurers.

kitsuneghost · 07/05/2023 15:35

Are you new to insurance?
This is common. When you call to cancel it will come right down.
Be careful that they don't change anything though.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2023 15:48

Always shop around before renewing. The only one I can't is my cats insurance, but when I told them I was leaving g they have me such a good deal that I stayed.

Justanothermum01 · 07/05/2023 16:00

@kitsuneghost no not new, driving for over 20 years and always expect the premium to increase, its the fact that its doubled which shocked me! I get that costs have increased but have they doubled? I very much doubt it.

This is the second time I've posted this today, that can't happen now, insurers are no longer allowed to quote lower for new customers

Any that are still doing it should be reported as its unfair practice

missmollygreen · 07/05/2023 16:13

Intersting, my churchill renewal was exactly the same as last year

Justanothermum01 · 07/05/2023 16:17

@missmollygreen thats so interesting, am assuming nothing had changed to ‘lower’ your premiums?
We live in one of the lowest crime areas in the country, no claims, points, changes in my demographics or level of cover. Knowing others have had same premiums makes it even odder 😳
Out of interest did you ‘negotiate’ a-lower premium last year?
