Churchill insurance have doubled my premium

Justanothermum01 · 07/05/2023 14:26

From £550 to just under 1k.
Nothing whatsoever has changed in the last year which would affect my premium.
I’ve just out my details through a comparison website and can get the same level of insurance elsewhere for around £450 pa.
I’m actually pretty disgusted with Churchill.

£1k for someone who's been driving for 20 years?! Have you got teens on your policy?

I got new insurance last year, 2 different comparison sites, same insurance from the same company £550 v £320! Insurance is ridiculous!

Justanothermum01 · 07/05/2023 16:21

@Lovelynames123 yes I’ve been driving for 21 years. Nearly 50 yo! Had one claim in all that time- accidental damage not caused by me (storm). Not recent. No teens, DH on policy which actually reduces the premium.

Also no other insurance claims, and i drive a safe and non sporty car!

@missmollygreen thats so interesting, am assuming nothing had changed to ‘lower’ your premiums?
We live in one of the lowest crime areas in the country, no claims, points, changes in my demographics or level of cover. Knowing others have had same premiums makes it even odder 😳
Out of interest did you ‘negotiate’ a-lower premium last year?

No nothing changed, and it has been set to auto renew for the last 3 years btu I have always been really impressed with the price so never rang them.
Although after reading your post I thought I would chance my arm as it runs out next month and they instantly dropped my policy from £162 to £129!

girlfriend44 · 07/05/2023 16:43

Putting a spouse on your insurances usually reduces it?

NowItsSpring · 07/05/2023 17:59

Just had my Churchill renewal and it has increased 42% with no changes / claims. I will of course be going elsewhere - lots of options with well known insurers coming in much cheaper on comparison websites.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 07/05/2023 18:02

Churchill did the same to me last year.

I was paying about £400 and they wanted to charge me nearly £750 - I switched to Tesco who charged me about £350 🤷‍♀️

AnotherTwinParent · 18/11/2023 15:33

Well, it's still happening - quoting lower premiums for new customers. Churchill almost doubled my renewal today. My new customer quote was almost the same as my old insurance premium.

autumn1610 · 18/11/2023 15:40

Our insurance went from £350 to £700 no changes no crashes and that was the cheapest after shopping around. Been driving for about 18 years. Got advised inflation/brexit etc seems to me excuses for them to make more money. A lot of people I know have said the same about it doubling

NotTerfNorCis · 18/11/2023 15:41

LordEmsworth · 07/05/2023 14:37

Well, if this is what you choose to get angry about, crack on love.

Customers have a choice, if they choose to pay a grand rather than shop around and pay £450 then that's their call.

It's punishing loyalty, and it is disgusting.

IDriveMySupernova · 18/11/2023 15:45

My car insurance last year was £263. I stayed with the same insurer as they actually lowered my premium. This year they quoted me £523!! Somebody reversed into the side of my car which accounts for some of the increase even though I didn’t end up claiming. I did some shopping around and phoned them back, managed to get them down to £313.

Ducksinthebath · 18/11/2023 15:50

Insurance premiums are invariably increasing this year. I’ve read it’s the number of claims being made going up and the cost of repairs made under those claims going up.

Hadalifeonce · 18/11/2023 15:54

Aviva upped our quote by 40%, I called them to query it, no changes, no claims. The chap told me that the increase was due to national claim numbers going up, even though we live in a very low crime area. I asked if he could revisit the amount, hoping he would drop it a little.
Nothing, he just said you are obviously free to shop around.

GasPanic · 18/11/2023 16:11

Was it an electric car ?

Christmasaaarrrggghhh · 18/11/2023 16:14

I would advise against picking the cheapest in the price comparison websites. We did and claiming was a nightmare. Like the film the Laundromat. Take your money and disappear.

VisionsOfSplendour · 18/11/2023 17:08

NotTerfNorCis · 18/11/2023 15:41

It's punishing loyalty, and it is disgusting.

Its not disgusting, they don't owe their customers anything, why would you expect to be rewarded? It's a business transaction, loyalty doesn't come into it

There is so much awareness about shopping around for all types of insurance there can't be any left who doesn't know that you shouldn't just accept the renewal quote. Obviously you can if you choose to but adverts for comparison sites are everywhere.

CluelessHamster · 18/11/2023 17:16

Mine was £450 - £318 last year. No claims. No changes. Driving 35 years. A few years ago when I was married, our insurance was about £290 a year on the main family car, less on the old banger runabout. I did the price comparison checks and there was only one cheaper quote from some random company with poor reviews so I renewed ☹️

MintJulia · 18/11/2023 17:26

OP, every insurance company (or brand in your case) has a target market, whether that is high mileage middle age or young drivers or pensioners.

Maybe they've changed their demographic and you don't fit any more. Or maybe there has been an increase in car thefts in your area which is now regarded as high risk.

Direct Line (same company as Churchill) tried to double my insurance this year. Same car, same address, no penalties no accidents, no claims. I just moved to another provider. Their loss.

fingerguns · 18/11/2023 17:59

Same here. I was with Churchill last year and paid £307. My insurance was up for renewal last week and they quoted something like £560.

Took a while but I moved to Hastings Direct, for £468. Best I could get. I am like you, nothing has changed since this time last year, other than the price.

coldcallerbaiter · 18/11/2023 18:03

Same happened to me, It seems like this is a recent thing, never happened before.

Starchipenterprise · 18/11/2023 18:16

You dodged a bullet - Churchill customer service is appalling!

BarrowPeaShingle821 · 18/11/2023 18:28

I never auto renew any insurance

I shop around

Company's rely on people doing the auto renew !

YoullCatchYourDeathInTheFog · 18/11/2023 18:36

There's a few things going on here.

Price-walking, where insurance premium gets tweaked up by (say) twenty percent every year for renewing customers shouldn't be a thing any more because in theory it's been outlawed and insurance companies need to charge the same for new customers as for renewing ones.

But doubling your old premium wouldn't be price-walking anyway - such a huge increase in a single renewal would be asking for trouble.

It sounds as if either Churchill have done a major account overhaul and changed their risk appetite in your area, or as if your model of car has turned out to be problematic: really expensive to repair due to some kind of parts supply chain problem, a magnet for car thieves with a crap lock, or electric and prone to catching fire.

DadGNet · 04/09/2024 16:13

My current Churchill Insurance essential car insurance premium is £870.

I just received a renewal offer of £1660 exactly double!
BUT they quoted £727 when I requested quotes from Moneysupermarket 2 days later!!

Note, nothing at all has changed except 1 more NCB year so even less risk...
This is blatantly unethical and extortionate trying to rip us off if we auto renew.
I will never ever consider Churchill again even if they are the lowest quote by far!!
it's disgusting what they attempt to charge us.

Their service person advised that the system is different for the different sources (ie online compare site & their auto renewals) which is garbage as their risk system is the same.
The only difference is the METHOD for renewal.

I just renewed with eSure for £630!!

I know this is old thread but... hope this avoids others to not be ripped off.

pinkgown · 04/09/2024 16:16

The AA does the same thing for their breakdown cover.
