OK wtf, just watching coronation clips and at 03.10 it sound like the choir is singing "I've had vagina for dinner..."

Tell me I'm not the only one who hears it this way.

I'm not a forensic linguist, but surely it should be pronounced veevat regheena and not vighvat rejyna.

I am a forensic linguist and thought it's historical linguistics rather than forensic …’*

This, in a nutshell, is why I love MN.

Buzzer3555 · 07/05/2023 15:09

I heard wider vagina camilla

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/05/2023 15:15

@Papernotplastic

me too.

LlynTegid · 07/05/2023 15:18

If you remember the 'squidgygate' tapes, seems remarkably apt!!!

I heard Vivat Regina.

Thank you! It’s been the coronation anthem for just over 100 years. The “vivats” are sung whenever the monarch is present. Choirs were literally singing “Vivat Regina” for 70 years of Elizabeth II reign. Including at Will and Kates wedding! But apparently it’s new and everyone has vaginas on the brain.

Hmm... as an ex-chorister with a Latin GCSE, I suspect most people snicker the first time they sing/pronounce/hear the word regina, and always have done.

I was surprised to learn yesterday that the choir that sings the vivat at coronations aren't actually choristers, they are the (academic) King's scholars from Westminster school.

😂

My elderly DM (lives with us) had the coronation on yesterday (at about 500dB) and as i went past her living room door i heard ''VAGINA! VAGINA! VAGINA!'' ect. and thought wt actual fuck is that bit?!

Grin
Begsthequestion · 07/05/2023 15:46

93% of British people heard "vagina" and the rest went to public school 🙃

Jitterybugs · 07/05/2023 15:48

I’m waiting for a hearing test appointment as I’ve noticed a problem in recent months. I almost mentioned it on the Coronation thread yesterday but didn’t want to lower the tone 🤣
I watched it live and I heard it as 5 lads vagina Camilla ! I rewound the tv 3 times and I knew I was mishearing but I sat here on my own with tears of laughter running down my face. Juvenile behaviour for a woman pushing 70 but this thread has set me off again 😂 😂

CharlottenBerg · 07/05/2023 15:50

When I was a kid we went to Hampton Court and I saw a statue that had ELIZABETH REGINA on the plinth. My Dad explained it I and thought 'that word is so much like 'vagina', how come the Queen we have now isn't embarrassed?'

PollyThePixie · 07/05/2023 15:52

diddl · 07/05/2023 14:32

Did it take a while to think that up Op?

We heard it also, as have other people.

PollyThePixie · 07/05/2023 15:53

Sorry, not the I had vagina for dinner. But definitely Vagina Camilla.

That's the way I was taught to say it, except that 'regina' would be r, then eg as in leg, in as in 'pin' and the final syllable 'ah' to rhyme with 'jar' (non rhotic).

KimberleyClark · 07/05/2023 16:01

I didn’t hear it, but I’m familiar with the hymn ( sang it at my choir) so knew vivat Regina was coming. Oh and I didn’t go to public school. Did Latin at state school.

TimeSlipMushroom · 07/05/2023 16:14

I'm a pleb and I hear it too OP! 😂

I did Latin at state school, and so has my daughter. She told me that when Queen Victoria was giving birth, the two doctors had to work under a raised sheet attached to her at the neck, and speak to each other in Latin. 'Ex vaginam!' she exclaimed, giggling.

Brilliant. Come the revolution this will be the shibboleth.

Play the tape and see what the toffs hear. Then first against the wall if they speak Latin.

I'm clearly a pleb because although I know what a shibboleth is I head WIPE THAT VAGINA CAMILLA. Very clearly.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/05/2023 16:35

The OP did make me watch 4 minutes of the coronation though. A feat no one else has managed.

I didn’t hear vagina and I went to state school. Don’t most people know that regina is Latin for queen? It’s why it says (said) ER on postboxes, stamps etc…

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 07/05/2023 16:41

it's just the "Vivats".

Vivat Rex Carolus

Vivat Regina Camilla

Lool great idea! A nice, neat reversal of how Latin is usually used in British society.

Yeah, I've seen loads of The West Wing too. Grin

Also a "pleb".

I still knew it was the vivats and "Vagina" was not mentioned.

🤷‍♀️

Ah well done. Boris would be very proud (but you still can't join their club, soz).

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 07/05/2023 16:46

Am I being thick here, does anyone actually think people did think they were singing about vaginas?

Isn't Latin a "dead" language?

Nobody knows how any of it is pronounced.

Nobody is wrong.

It could be pronounced "Banana Hurricane Chessboard" for all we know. 🤔😂

Jourdain11 · 07/05/2023 16:56

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 07/05/2023 14:36

I am a forensic linguist and though it's historical linguistics rather than forensic, nobody really knows. It's thought that most Latin words had a similar pronunciation to the Italian of today, so /vi:væt/ etc, but the truth is, we don't know.

I am surprised that people think they heard "vagina" though when the word "Regina" has been such a well-known and commonplace word connected to the RF for so long.

What did these people think the R on stamps was?

@PurBal I think it's more they have inventing a totes hilaires story to make fellow MNers spit out their drinks and say "OMFG OP, I'm crying, funniest thing I've ever heard"

What did these people think the R on stamps was?

A friend of mine, who did go to school, wondered aloud if they'd be replacing ER on the post vans with PC soon.
