How organised are you with food shopping? How often do you go?

Sometimes, we meal plan and then sometimes the wheels come off and I feel like we constantly have to go to the shops to get stuff. It drives me nuts.

My folks used to do one big food shop a week and now I am in awe of the consistent level of supreme organisation! Maybe a quick top up shop for milk and fruit or veg but apart from that the kitchen was always stocked.

How organised are you with the groceries? Do you meal plan and rotate menus?

I meal plan and go shopping once a week. I try not to visit any shop after that as I can pop in for some cling film and spend £37 on random crap.

I get my weekly food delivered and i will probably do a top up fruit/milk/veg mid week but thats it. Organising meals mean i wont run to shops more often and end up spending more than planned. I sometimes despair at planning meals (dont we all) though so i’ll always have some convenient food in the freezer when i dont have time or cant be bothered : veggies burgers/tortellini etc.

Amammai · 06/05/2023 22:33

One big shop on a Wednesday (Sainsbury delivery) then normally a top-up shop of bits I’ve forgotten/stuff we’ve ran out of at Aldi on a Saturday.

Online shopping has definitely helped me to be more organised with food shopping - I like adding to my list across the week and having a good look in the cupboards etc whilst I’m compiling it. I can also stick a budget a bit better. If I do a big shop at the supermarket, I over spend and forget more things!

Pestispeeved · 06/05/2023 22:34

I go food shopping about three times a week, we like fresh vegetables. Also our consumption of bread and eggs is erratic.

PinkiOcelot · 06/05/2023 22:36

Once a week on a Sunday - Tesco delivery. The really can’t be bothered to go shopping so sit and order it on a Saturday night.

Fairyjuice · 06/05/2023 22:37

I meal plan and either do a full grocery shop or c+c religiously every Fri/Sat. We have 2 adults and 4 dcs so everyone would starve otherwise 🙈 The cost of little shops/top ups is much higher than one collective shop.

I will say though that we have a huge fridge freezer plus chest freezer, and if we didn't, I would definitely need to do top ups.

Weekly shop delivered Sunday between 9 and 10. Top up Thurs Friday if needed. We get fruit delivery Thursday. Rarely shop for Saturday evening we go out Saturday for what we want for dinner. Today was Buddah bowls

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 06/05/2023 22:42

I get a weekly food shop delivered on Saturday morning. I have a reminder in my phone to order it on Tuesdays. This makes me meal plan for the week.

I do one other shop in Aldi for cheaper stuf and things I may have forgot.

I don't know how to not meal plan without it being a massive pita and be so time consuming.

thecatsthecats · 06/05/2023 22:46

Three online shops a month, but two big supermarkets within a ten minute walk if we fancy being lazy or spontaneous.

We just randomly buy a shit ton of veg, some meat, freezer stuff and a load of tins. We always have something in, and generally can make almost any cuisine we fancy.

Except today, where we've run out of food a day before going away, and my pregnant stomach doesn't want any food we have. Oops.

doalot · 06/05/2023 22:54

Astonished at everyone else’s organisation! We probably go x3 times a week.

pastypirate · 06/05/2023 23:00

Once a week is all that's allowed in my house. Dp is a pain and defects quite often.

The way I got it under control is by trying to do a month shop of all the long lasting items and or the items you have to go to a different fecking shop for. For example I shop mainly at aldi but my kids only eat crispy minis so I will buy them in Morrisons etc but I will buy 8 boxes at a time.

All the regular buys are bought in bulk if more than one is used in a month. For example never just buy one deodorant/squash/packet of loo roll.

pastypirate · 06/05/2023 23:00

I also keep a few cartons of uht put away and it stops last minute milk for eve morning shops

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 06/05/2023 23:03

On line shop once a fortnight. We get milk delivered so that helps, along with two fridges and freezers.

sunshineandshowers40 · 06/05/2023 23:05

I aim for once a week with a mid week top up but this doesn't always happen; twice a week in the school holidays or at least 3 times a fortnight.

Yeah. I'm like this

mycatsanutter · 06/05/2023 23:24

I meal plan and go about every 10 days sometimes I can drag it out to 14 . Will just buy fruit and crisps as a top up . I'm good at making meals out of random things .

TomatoSandwiches · 06/05/2023 23:34

We have a delivery slot booked same day 99% of the time, I meal plan 3/4 family meals, add the household things, DH gets his freezer stuff for the days he cooks and packed lunch items for him and the children.

NeatCompactSleeper · 06/05/2023 23:35

Delivered once a week.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 06/05/2023 23:38

Once a week I have a delivery. I also have a massive list of meals we all like built up in a notepad so I just pick 7 every week and order the stuff for them. I try to keep one emergency meal in place as well like a tuna pasta bake or corned beef hash. Before I did this I was spending a fortune and buying random stuff not whole meals.

Same

I shop once a week but sometimes stretch it to 8/9 days with a list and meal plan/batch cooking

Live alone so it's not very exciting!

I do
Stuff for lunch (WFH) which is generally sandwiches or soup
Snacks
Fruit
Meals - I pick one thing to batch cook that week and then meals are a mix of stuff I've already cooked and frozen and simple stuff like omelette/jacket potato etc
Store cupboard needs - stuff I always have in so I check how much I have of each thing

hopsalong · 06/05/2023 23:41

Embracing disorganisation here. I buy a lot now on Ocado Zoom, Zapp, Deliveroo, and Amazon. Was wasting too much food with weekly shops because DH and I aren't always predictable on weekday evenings (one of us often late / eating at work) and at the weekends we like to be spontaneous and so will often take DC out/ they'll end up eating at a friend's house etc.

This is going to horrify you, but I have a food delivery of some kind most days. About once a month I do a big online Waitrose shop for pasta, own-brand cereal, loo roll, wine, squash, olive oil etc.

UsingChangeofName · 06/05/2023 23:42

Once a week.
I don't meal plan in the sense of being able to tell you what meals we will be eating next week.
When I get to the supermarket, I look at what meat they have - or fish - and then buy vegetable that might 'go' - for example, if making a casserole I'd have different veg from if I were having some grilled fish. But usually I will buy some mince or some chicken without having decided what we will make with it.
If someone fancies making something particular, they will put the ingredients on the list but we aren't rigid about it - we make things with the ingredients we have.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 06/05/2023 23:53

We (me, DH and DS 1) choose one meal a week each and then fill up the other meals with "family faves". We then write a shopping list based on those meals and what's in the cupboards already and one of us goes shopping.
I did a printed shopping list so we can that cross off anything we don't need that week.

Big shop once a week, top up shop once, maybe twice during the week.

erlangshen · 07/05/2023 00:19

3-4 times, small amount, Freshness is my number 1 priority...and I wont know what I feel like in a few days, therefore can never plan a week ahead.

Cornishclio · 07/05/2023 00:24

One weekly shop and maybe one or two extra top ups for milk, bread and more fruit.
