How organised are you with food shopping? How often do you go?

Sometimes, we meal plan and then sometimes the wheels come off and I feel like we constantly have to go to the shops to get stuff. It drives me nuts.

My folks used to do one big food shop a week and now I am in awe of the consistent level of supreme organisation! Maybe a quick top up shop for milk and fruit or veg but apart from that the kitchen was always stocked.

How organised are you with the groceries? Do you meal plan and rotate menus?

I write a food plan on Friday evening, with a glass of wine for inspiration

Saturday morning I parkrun, shower, food shop, home and food put away by 11.30.

I love this time of year because as it gets warmer, appetites change and so do all the things we want to eat. I like trying new recipes.

supersonicginandtonic · 07/05/2023 00:28

I have supermarket deliveries on a Wednesday and Saturday, every week.

TheUsualChaos · 07/05/2023 00:47

Meal plan and food shop delivered every Saturday morning usually. We have pretty much the same few meals on rotation during weekdays, don't have time or head space for planning lots of different weekly menus, it's literally about survival. We mix it up at weekends depending on what we are doing.

DiscoBeat · 07/05/2023 00:59

I go early every Monday after I drop my sons off to school. Nice and quiet! We have a shopping list on the kitchen noticeboard which we update as we go along, so just grab the list and go.

DiscoBeat · 07/05/2023 01:00

Also do shopping for my mum later in the week, so top up milk and fruit/vegetables at the same time.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 07/05/2023 01:11

Once a week delivered.

MyMachineAndMe · 07/05/2023 01:17

We're shit at it. We do an online shop once a fortnight or three weeks and we're always running out of stuff and having to nip to the shop for a few bits in between.

Sugarfree23 · 07/05/2023 01:19

Sort of meal plan. Shop on Monday,

Scouts night is Wednesday so it's pizza night, hour from pick up to drop off, so needs to be super quick.

I start at the chilled bit of the supermarket, sort my meats out, usually I end up with mince, chicken breast, fish, maybe meat balls, sausage, or burgers, and something to bung in the oven one night, roast or something for Sunday.

As I go ill figure out what else I need to go with what.

My freezer always have veg, and food we can have if I've missed the shops.

Divorcedalongtime · 07/05/2023 01:20

I shop daily. I’ve never been able to forward plan for a week and now at 59 years old I don’t feel any shame about this anymore.

Sugarfree23 · 07/05/2023 01:23

@Divorcedalongtime do you not feel it takes up loads of time to shop daily?

I did at one point and it drove me nuts always having to shop.

babakeri · 07/05/2023 01:29

We get Tesco deliveries since pandemic and I won't go back to shop for weekly shop. Best household change we made. I also do delivery saver.
We would go to shop only just for fun buys really, to get some chocs or pizza for pizza night.
For me weekly shops in store are soooo boring and I'm happy to get delivered all that I need without having to think too much and queue.

I have always lived short walking distance from a shop. The agonising and stress of trying to organise a weekly shop would take longer.

Nat6999 · 07/05/2023 01:42

I have a delivery once a fortnight, one Morrisons & one Ocado.

RoseMartha · 07/05/2023 01:52

I dont really meal plan but I make sure I have enough on a food shop for 10-12 days of meals as I only go that often.

I do occasionally top up but that is usually fresh stuff eg fruit and veg and milk.

IrregularChoiceFan · 07/05/2023 01:59

We meal plan and shop once per week, sometimes we have to grab another milk in the week but thats about it.

Losingweightissohard · 07/05/2023 02:06

I can walk to a Lidl and Aldi in 10/15 minutes so I feel like I’m always popping in. In the week at work I also have a break in between clients and use the big supermarkets facilities so I pick something up daily using up my meal allowance to buy fresh berries for the family daily. I’ve never been good at meal planning and once a week shopping. I think it will be easier when it is just me and my husband as we will happily eat beans on toast or whatever’s in the cupboards. Both my kids are a bit obsessed with having salad and fruit everyday one was panicking about being able to walk to a Lidl or Aldi when they go to Uni as they are so use to the convenience of picking up whatever they want when they want and they are just so use to nipping to Lidl or Aldi. Thankfully they can walk to an Aldi in 20 minutes from their University! A Waitrose too but it’s a bit pricier than Aldi.

doctorfester · 07/05/2023 02:15

Online shop twice a week so that we have fresh fruit and veg

eloquent · 07/05/2023 02:19

Not at all

I buy whenever the mood takes me/I want something specific/I remember

MissingMoominMamma · 07/05/2023 02:43

I shop daily. There’s a Booths and an Aldi within a two minute walk of my house. It’s just become a habit now.

Aquarius1234 · 07/05/2023 03:16

Lol maybe one day of the week I don't step foot in a supermarket/ shop.

Aquarius1234 · 07/05/2023 03:18

My life is shopping 👎

crazyaboutcats · 07/05/2023 03:38

We do a big once a month shop for all meat and fish which are portioned and frozen, and pantry, household, toiletries and pet stuff.

Then once a week to our local Persian or Chinese grocery stores for fresh fruit, veg, eggs, yoghurt and bread plus

whitepepper86 · 07/05/2023 04:10

Yep...we do a weekly shop on Saturday which covers us Sat to Friday. Rarely miss anything

We use an app called AnyList to help us organise. It is brilliant:
-I created a shopping list which is shared between me and my DH AND which is linked to Alexa! So we midway cooking, if we are out of x, we just say 'add x to shopping list'
-We enter all our fav recipes in there
-Choose what we want to eat that week and add it to the built-in calendar
-Within that recipe, select what we need. It automatically gets added to the shopping list and automatically ordered according to type of item
-At the shops, once added to the trolley, tick it off

AuntieMarys · 07/05/2023 05:20

I shop every 5 days and meal plan religiously. Everything gets used up...I throw nothing away.

countrygirl99 · 07/05/2023 05:33

Meal plan and shop weekly. Mid week top up for milk, bread, fruit. We always have a couple of batch cooked things in the freezer or store cupboard ingredients for something quick should the need arise.
