A GP friend of mine recently put on her stories a review of a gut health drink which worked for her. Said it made her feel fantastic. I went and bought the drink, and at checkout it said 'who recommended this to you, enter their name and you get 50% off, so do they'. I entered her name and got the 50% off. Life got in the way and a day later the drink arrives, and I'm like oops I need to tell her I entered her name and thank you for the recommendation. I go to message her, she's unfollowed me.

WTF?

Life is too short for all this sort of palava.

Curseofthenation · 05/05/2023 11:36

I guess you weren't very close and she freaked out. I would only do that with a close friend, family member OR someone that directly recommended the product to me in person. I would let it go and count it as a lesson learned.

I think you're right. It was a friend from school and we were chatting a fair bit but not super close. I did think when putting in her name should I ask first but didn't think it would be a huge deal.

They didn't recommend it to YOU, they just recommended it. I guess they didn't want you to do that again, it is annoying getting spam from this sort of thing.

redskylight · 05/05/2023 11:49

I wouldn't be happy at someone (and not even a close friend) passing my details on to a company for marketing. You should have asked your friend's permission first.

shammalammadingdong · 05/05/2023 11:58

Woman literally advertises a product, recommends to her friends etc.
Friend buys product on that recommendation.
Friend is asked who recommended it, answers honestly.
Womans email address is given to company that she already gave it to.

She has no reason to be miffed here. She's a spanner.

Softoprider · 05/05/2023 12:01

A Spanner ! She is !

Yeah I agree with this - she did recommend it to you, albeit indirectly.

You didn't do anything wrong.

ashitghost · 05/05/2023 12:06

I wouldn’t have given someone else’s name and contact details to anyone. But this is seriously just not worth giving an other moment of your time.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/05/2023 12:07

Sounds daft that she was annoyed - she’ll be getting 50% off too!

Maybe it can only be used a certain number of times and she’d promised the discount to closer friends ?

She passed on a person's contact details without their permission.
Surely, in this day and age, we know that that's not acceptable?

There is no particular reason to assume the company already had her email address. She might have a second one she uses for buying things so she doesn't get spammed by marketing that you've now signed her up for

CurlewKate · 05/05/2023 12:28

When you say "GP" do you mean an actual doctor? Recommending a "gut health drink"? Wow. I reckon you're well rid.

sillyme563 · 05/05/2023 12:38

Didn't give any email address, just her name and said this is who recommended it

exactly - a GP recommending a gut health drink is a real recommendation for me. I wouldn't buy it otherwise 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yep. I should have asked her first but to unfriend me because of it??

She didn't though.

AtomicBlondeRose · 05/05/2023 12:41

This is weird. Most of the time people put these things on social media in order to get the referral discount! It’s stupid not to do it as it only benefits you both.

JenniferBarkley · 05/05/2023 12:41

You shouldn't have done it, but unfollowing you just for that is a bit extreme.

Ktime · 05/05/2023 12:42

How will they contact her for her 50% off if they don't have her email address? Are they going match her name against a doctor database? Confused

TiaraBoo · 05/05/2023 12:43

i don’t get it, why was she recommending it if she didn’t want to spread the word and get money off?

They just asked for a name not an email address.

PossiblyPertunia · 05/05/2023 12:47

Was this on Instagram? Maybe she had already unfollowed you but you've only realised as you went to message her.
You did absolutely nothing wrong though, these people saying you did obviously don't understand online marketing.

arethereanyleftatall · 05/05/2023 12:47

This doesn't make sense. Why would they only ask for her name, what use is that to anyone? How would they contact her from a name? How would she know you had if you didn't give them any way to contact her?

But, no, you shouldn't give someone's name out unless you've got their consent.
