To be annoyed that my work is cancelled due to this Coronation?

AmeliaWarnerBros · 04/05/2023 19:00

Hi all!

So I recently acquired a weekend job to accompany my fledgling creative career (ie I need money as I earn buttons in a job I work hard at but can be cancelled at short notice for at any time!).

The new job (I've now been in it for 2 months) is all day Saturday & Sunday in an office & I enjoy it, but...I've been cancelled for this entire weekend coming up due to the bloody coronation.

Annoyingly I don't know if I'll get paid at all for this cancellation (which I was informed less than a week before) which really pisses me off tbh. I have a contract but there is nothing about this kind of crap in it, but I don't get holiday pay (it's added to my hourly rate instead), so I don't know where I stand.

I find it embarrassing to ask about this sort of issue.

Another reason to resent this ridiculous waste of public funds. Us poor people (the working poor; not benefits' claimants) are having work cancelled which just reminds/shows us that job certainty means nowt in this country.

Worth noting that this company have also changed my hours 3 X times now & I've never complained; just smiled, nodded & gone along with what they wanted as per.

I'm fed up of working hard for low pay & without any job certainty. I'm tempted to go on JSA just to get regular money whether I work or not , or maybe retrain. But then again all the jobs I'm interested in are creative, low paid & unstable industries...

This country...

How is the coronation affecting your workplace so much they feel they need to close?

LordEmsworth · 04/05/2023 19:08

Hmmm. Well quite a lot of people do a job that doesn't interest them, because they value the security above creativity. Most of us don't get to live the dream of a creative, fulfilling job, with security and steady pay, I am afraid. Good for you for going for the creative, fulfilling role.

Maybe you need to get over your embarrassment at asking about things like this - you might find that improves things?

Your entitlement to be paid will depend on your contract, but: https://www.acas.org.uk/when-extreme-weather-affects-work/pay-when-an-employer-temporarily-closes-the-workplace

Pay when an employer temporarily closes the workplace: When extreme weather affects work - Acas

What happens with pay if someone cannot work because their employer decides to close the workplace or stop work temporarily.

You can't just choose to go on JSA either

Tinkerbyebye · 04/05/2023 19:08

Grow up

MillieMollieMandy1 · 04/05/2023 19:08

Sometimes you have to compromise by doing a less interesting job that is more reliable and pays better. Also I am not even slightly interested in the Coronation but can see it has very little to do with your circumstances.

Tohaveandtohold · 04/05/2023 19:09

It sounds like you have a workplace or contract problem. This is not all about the coronation as they’ve changed your hours 3 times as well so they’re flaky.

NeighbourhoodonWatch · 04/05/2023 19:10

It's not 'this country', it's 'this employer'...

LeggyLinda · 04/05/2023 19:10

It’s a once in a generation event so I appreciate that it is important. But, I’m with you OP, in the current economic climate wouldn’t it have been more sensible to have held it last week where there was a planned bank holiday anyway?

ThisSingleMama · 04/05/2023 19:11

What's the job?

PinkFootstool · 04/05/2023 19:12

Sounds like a shitty employer - they've been messing you around, so is the coronation just an excuse for them? Why are they not opening?

NoSquirrels · 04/05/2023 19:12

You need to understand your contract (is it a zero hours job?)

Worth noting that this company have also changed my hours 3 X times now & I've never complained; just smiled, nodded & gone along with what they wanted as per.

Don’t just nod and smile.

What kind of creative job is Saturday & Sunday in an office, anyway? And how is it affected by the Coronation? Very intriguing.

Dontbelieveaword · 04/05/2023 19:13

Ffs, pick a theme and stick to it. What are you moaning about exactly?

Your employer
Zero hour contracts
The monarchy
The coronation
Benefit claimants
Having to work 2 jobs
Getting work cancelled last minute
The government
This country

You've already come up with your own answer: retrain. Then we won't have to read shit like this from people who choose 'professions' that don't pay well but are constantly moaning about it and then tell us they may as well just be on benefits and solve all their problems, because its that easy

AmeliaWarnerBros · 04/05/2023 19:18

Thanks for the helpful replies, @Tinkerbyebye being the exception!

It is a bog standard office job in an office open during the weekend. For those that think I'm complaining about having to do the job- you've misunderstood. I'm complaining about the work being snatched away from me due to this stupid coronation.

I resent- understandably- the fact that I'll likely not be paid for it.

And no I wouldn't go down the JSA route, don't worry. I'd probably be turned away for being labelled as lazy or something anyway.

This is why only rich people can afford to live by the sea making shite out of washed up plastic, get on country file and call it a 'job'

RichardHeed · 04/05/2023 19:18

It’s a once in a generation event
I mean, usually, yea. But there’s no way this is a once in a generation event for quite a lot of us given Charlie Boy’s advanced age.

TeaKitten · 04/05/2023 19:19

Moaning about ‘this country’ and the coronation when the problem is your employer messing you about. JSA isn’t a thing anymore, it’s universal credit and you’d have to look for and get work anyway. Most of the ‘benefits claimants’ are the working poor.

ThisSingleMama · 04/05/2023 19:20

The coronation is on Saturday

You can't blame ' the stupid coronation' on it being closed on Sunday

There are a lot of coronation events on Sunday as well as Saturday, and they’ve cancelled the weekend for the coronation…

ThisSingleMama · 04/05/2023 19:23

Well there's nothing going on here on Sunday so wouldn't know

Oh well

NoSquirrels · 04/05/2023 19:23

Nothing is ‘snatched away’ if you’re on a zero hours contract. If the reason they don’t need you in is because business will be slow because it’s a(nother) bank holiday weekend that’s not really ‘the stupid coronation’, it’s an issue that might reoccur every bank holiday.

CabernetSauvignon · 04/05/2023 19:25

The fact that your employers are crap and haven't produced a comprehensible contract is hardly the fault of the coronation and those involved with organising it.

electriclight · 04/05/2023 19:27

I've no idea why you're pissed off about a coronation, when the issue is really with your employer. They don't have to close, but are. They could also have chosen to pay you, and to have given you more notice. Really weird that you didn't check the payment issue when they told you not to come in. Either way, a coronation is certainly a rare event so unlikely to inconvenience you regularly. Try to be happy for those of us who are pleased to have an extra day off.

I reckon I might see three.

bellabasset · 04/05/2023 19:36

I doubt there's any liability but a goodwill payment would be appreciated

Lamelie · 04/05/2023 19:37

You lost me at benefit claimants. Channel your ire into standing up for yourself at work.
