To be annoyed that my work is cancelled due to this Coronation?

Hi all!

So I recently acquired a weekend job to accompany my fledgling creative career (ie I need money as I earn buttons in a job I work hard at but can be cancelled at short notice for at any time!).

The new job (I've now been in it for 2 months) is all day Saturday & Sunday in an office & I enjoy it, but...I've been cancelled for this entire weekend coming up due to the bloody coronation.

Annoyingly I don't know if I'll get paid at all for this cancellation (which I was informed less than a week before) which really pisses me off tbh. I have a contract but there is nothing about this kind of crap in it, but I don't get holiday pay (it's added to my hourly rate instead), so I don't know where I stand.

I find it embarrassing to ask about this sort of issue.

Another reason to resent this ridiculous waste of public funds. Us poor people (the working poor; not benefits' claimants) are having work cancelled which just reminds/shows us that job certainty means nowt in this country.

Worth noting that this company have also changed my hours 3 X times now & I've never complained; just smiled, nodded & gone along with what they wanted as per.

I'm fed up of working hard for low pay & without any job certainty. I'm tempted to go on JSA just to get regular money whether I work or not , or maybe retrain. But then again all the jobs I'm interested in are creative, low paid & unstable industries...

This country...

Yep, I hear you! Self employed here, but the contractor we’re working for won’t pay out a day rate if we were to claim for Monday. Feel like sending Charlie the bill! We will be down 3 days this month due to the other bank holidays… nearly a week of lost earnings. It’s going to make budgeting through June a nightmare as that’s a 5 week month! 🤬

Oh please.

I am technically self-employed and only work (and therefore get paid) when my clients want me to work. These clients don't want me to work during religious holidays, weekends, bank holidays, or when they're ill, on business trips, on holiday, during school holidays, and sometimes they're just too busy with their own work to bother with me.

I also don't get paid if I am ill, have medical appointments etc, or go on holiday. I get some maternity benefit from the government, but it's a pittance.

Do I whine about my career choices? No! Sure, I'd like more income stability, but it was my choice, and my choice alone, to get into this particular line of work, and to be self-employed.

You're only missing out on two days' work, OP. Don't be so miserable. Enjoy your free weekend and don't bring everyone else down with your negativity.

As others have said you need to take the issues up with your employers. And I also don’t think rolled up holiday pay is allowed anymore so you might want to check that.

You lost me at benefit claimants. Channel your ire into standing up for yourself at work.

Exactly. Does the OP realise that a lot of "benefit claimants" are in work?

Get a supermarket job instead. They will never cancel your hours. I know most retail shops are open all three days.
