I must be doing something wrong I just can’t lose weight

And I’m only maintaining my current weight with huge effort 😞

Since turning 40 I just can’t lose the last stone that I need to (had a baby at 38 and I’ve lost 4 of the 5 stone I put on)

I have under active thyroid but it’s medicated and at the right level.

I feel like I’m doing something wrong and I’m having to cut down more and more or I put on weight so easily .

is this an age thing? Am I doing something wrong. AIBU to just be so fed up as I like food but I can’t enjoy anything anymore . Plus I have high cholesterol and I don’t eat high fat foods . Is this just it after 40?

It may not suit you, OP, but I found the only thing that worked for me after 40 was a low carb/ keto lifestyle.
My metabolism had definitely changed post-40, despite having a very active life.

AnneBerlin · 03/05/2023 23:02

Have you tried Slimming World? I know it sometimes gets a bit of hate on here, but it's the only way I've been able to lose weight (1.5 stone since Feb). Prior to that I was restricting myself to 1200 calories per day, was hungry and tired all the time and still didn't lose anything. Now I can eat plenty, have enough energy to exercise properly and am actually losing a pound or two each week.

Well done on your progress so far though, that's a brilliant achievement!

Ive cut out bread, biscuits and pasta and that’s enabling me to just maintain my weight so I think low carb does help but it’s like my body only wants to be this size now

Work out your tdee and count calories.

PaminaMozart · 03/05/2023 23:41

Ditch the refined carbs, sugar and UPF.
Skip breakfast and have an early lunch.
Fill up with vegetables before eating lean protein.
No snacking other than a piece of fruit, a couple of carrots or a boiled eggs.
And an occasional small piece of dark chocolate.
No eating after dinner.
Don't drink calories.
Exercise and walk as much as you can.

Do this 6 days a week, and don't go crazy on day 7 😀

Work out your tdee and count calories.

Absolutely.
If you are maintaining weight then you are eating up to your TDEE calorie target.
To lose weight reduce that figure by 20%. It is an age thing, we really do need less calories as we get older.

TDEE Calculator: Learn Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure

Use the TDEE calculator to learn your Total Daily Energy Expenditure, a measure of how many calories you burn per day. This calculator displays MUCH more!

Been off pasta bread and biscuits for about 9 weeks now, all it’s done I think is maintained my weight so that’s good but I wanted to lose some !
I don’t drink alcohol although I do drink coffee with milk so that’s something I could drop as I suppose that might be empty calories ?

I’ve been going for a long walk each day before breakfast (45-60 mins) for a month now I really thought that would help!!!

Another weight thread? FFS. 🙄 And you're 5 ft 10 - and 11 and a half stone, and are presenting this as overweight.... Really @Cantloseany Hmm

Also what is your AIBU?

Ochre247 · 04/05/2023 00:17

I have found that in need to go low carb now I'm 50 to be able to lose weight. Try the Freshwell app, it's free and my doctor recommended it. I've lost nearly 2 stone this year so far. The food is super tasty! Good luck either way x

hopsalong · 04/05/2023 00:23

If it's not easy, and you're not overweight (which you aren't) then I think you need to ask why it matters to you to be a few notches lower on the healthy weight range.

I'm an inch shorter than you and don't look 'thin' (if that is a goal, which I don't think it should be) unless I'm under 9 stone. You could also gain weight without being overweight. I don't honestly think that 10 1/2 stone would look massively different to 11 1/2 stone on someone of your height. Both are normal, healthy weights.

I think you have to do this, then once you have an idea, you can adjust what you need to be eating, and you wouldn’t need to calorie count for long. I don’t think extreme diets like very low carb are for most people long term, not least because they lack fibre which is v filling.

You are as you say within normal range, so very slow weight loss should be fine.

Tigofigo · 04/05/2023 00:28

What are you actually eating? You said no pasta bread bit could still be eating loads of eg white rice, chips and ice cream...

Agree clean eating, higher protein, lower carb, low sugar, moderate (good) fat seems to work best for me now I'm older.

An hour's walking won't do a huge amount quickly, but it helps. I walk for an hour or so many days, fast - cover 4/5 miles - and that burns about 300 calories. So you'd need to do that 12 times to burn off 3500 calories, which equals a pound in weight. While not eating more of course.

talknomore · 04/05/2023 00:41

Read about weight set point. Stabilise your weight where you are at for about 6 months and after that you can try to lose another 5% of your weight.

I couldn't live like this. I'd rather smash the weights and eat heartily.

Ponoka7 · 04/05/2023 07:33

Of you really want to change your body, do weights. As a pp said, it allows you to eat. After 40 a walk won't cut it. You should be thinking about maintaining bones, strength and your balance.

MagpiePi · 04/05/2023 07:44

Check your portion sizes, particularly for calorie dense foods and keep a food diary. You have to weigh and measure EVERYTHING, which is a pain, but might show you where you are getting extra calories from. I use Nutracheck which you have to pay for, (£25 a year) but it keeps me accountable as otherwise it’s wasted money IMO. It sets you realistic calorie goals and you can have different options such as keto/ low fat / fasting etc.
Doing more intensive exercise will build muscles which use more energy, but you can’t out-train a poor diet.

I think weights is generally more effective than cardio.

If you're in the healthy range, maybe you need to adjust your mindset about the numbers on the scales? Focus on your health, do loads of exercise, enjoy where you are currently.

I’m the same height and age as you and weigh about 10st 10lbs

I used to weight 11st 7lbs but dropped a lot when I stopped drinking.

What does your daily diet look like?

I think this possibly explains why some people can seemingly eat a lot more whilst staying slim. A lot of people wouldn't understand how somebody with the physique on the right could eat 50% more than somebody with the physique on the left and still be slimmer.
