I must be doing something wrong I just can’t lose weight

And I’m only maintaining my current weight with huge effort 😞

Since turning 40 I just can’t lose the last stone that I need to (had a baby at 38 and I’ve lost 4 of the 5 stone I put on)

I have under active thyroid but it’s medicated and at the right level.

I feel like I’m doing something wrong and I’m having to cut down more and more or I put on weight so easily .

is this an age thing? Am I doing something wrong. AIBU to just be so fed up as I like food but I can’t enjoy anything anymore . Plus I have high cholesterol and I don’t eat high fat foods . Is this just it after 40?

Take a break then come back to it. Seems your body has adapted to the calories. Have a month off then get back on it.

Or fluctuate your calories to avoid the body getting used to it. I haven't actually researched whether this works but loads of people do it. I wouldn't suggest taking a whole month off.

OP, I'd recommend stop focussing on weight and calories and instead focus on what makes you feel good and nourishes your body.

You might well be right that your body is just naturally a slightly higher weight now - but that's actually OK. Our bodies do change over time. Don't starve and deny your body what it needs to make it be a weight it doesn't want to be.

Focus on being active and nourishing your body in the way it needs. Whole foods - vegetables, protein, nuts, dairy. Stop counting calories and listen to your body. I switched to this way of living/ eating and I feel amazing and have surprisingly lost weight as a side effect, even though I feel I am eating more calorie dense foods, I guess I just need less of them because I am properly satisfied.

When you feel amazing you will not care about the number on the scale, and your body will look and feel good because it will be healthy and getting what it needs. Stop obsessing over being 10.5 stone - it doesn't make any sense.

You just need to shift your mindset a bit away from starvation/ denial and towards health and nourishment.

Another weight thread? FFS. 🙄 And you're 5 ft 10 - and 11 and a half stone, and are presenting this as overweight.... Really @Cantloseany Hmm

Also what is your AIBU?

I was 10 stone for about 6 years, I'm 5 ft 2 so not massively overweight but I wanted to loose a bit. I tried weight watchers, low carb, keto all of that, I would loose a few pounds then put it back on. I've recently been cutting out sugar and packaged food like crisps, sweets, brea, pasta. Basically I'm only eating fresh food. High fat, low sugar. Definitely no low fat foods like low fat yogurt, just full fat milk, butter, yogurt. I've done this for health reasons because I was eating too much sugar and was always tired. My jeans started to feel loose so I weighted myself I'm 9 stone 6. I've gone down to a size 10/ 12 was a 14 in jeans. Ironically it wasn't to loose weight. I havent counted any calories at all. The more I look at the scales the less I seem to loose! Definitely don't go hungry

Have you read Why we Eat (Too Much)
He talks about us all having a weight set point that we have to reset.
Worth a read. I'm still battling with my own though so I feel your pain. Keto works for me in terms of bloating, more energy and clear skin though.
I've got a keto thread going on the low carb forum you are welcome to join

I would also have a break or a 'feast' week as some call it.

Ditch the diet, eat whatever you want. It's likely you'll put a couple of pounds on but there are many, many stories from people on all sorts of diets where this works and weughtloss kick starts again afterwards.

I think this possibly explains why some people can seemingly eat a lot more whilst staying slim. A lot of people wouldn't understand how somebody with the physique on the right could eat 50% more than somebody with the physique on the left and still be slimmer.

tbh, I put that picture/text into the category of "made up shit on the Internet"

Am curious how you get on, OP, what you try & what seems to work best for you.

MrFlibblesEyes · 05/05/2023 10:23

Could it be portion size? Sometimes you can eat what sounds like a really healthy diet but it can be really calorific too. E.g snacking on things like nuts etc can lead to confusion as a portion of nuts is actually quite small so having a large handful could easily be an extra 400 kcal without realising?

Thiswayorthatway · 05/05/2023 10:26

Do you get out of breath on your daily walk? You need to do a variety of exercises. Can you swim, do classes etc.

Back21970 · 05/05/2023 10:46

I am 5ft 9 and 11 stone 5, would love to get back to around 10.7, so I know what you mean OP.

It’s not a huge amount of weight but would make a massive difference to how my clothes look & fit and my confidence.

Im in my 50’s and it’s so hard to even lose a pound, I would echo upping exercise and cutting sugar and carbs.

It does seem to get much harder to even maintain weight the older you get.
