School says “bring lots of cash”

Queestuproblema · 03/05/2023 16:55

I’ll start this by saying I understand schools are underfunded and have been doing Christmas markets/summer fayres/wear x colour for £1 days since even I have been at school. It’s not going to stop but the leaflet we’ve been sent this week quotes:

”Spring market
Come and toast the coronation!
Support our school, bring bags and lots of cash”

AIBU to think the wording of bring lots of cash is completely insensitive to how much everyone is struggling right now? I don’t feel that part was necessary. They could’ve made the leaflet without that surely given some children wont even be able to attend with a few pounds.

I and my 4 siblings have been through schools and all to different secondaries, have 2 children in primary and I have never seen any phrase even in the ball park of "bring loads of money to spend".

It's a light-hearted rhyme. I've never seen it either but it's just a ligh hearted rhyme. Get over yourself. You don't need to attend? The money will no doubt be spent on pencils the kids probably desperately need. Maybe direct your disgust at people that can make changes to school funding so schools don't need to make up rhymes to get people to buy stuff at a fete I'm sure they can't be asked to run, but have to because they have no money.

Yes OP, you'll get a bunch of condescending idiots on here pretending there's no way it could possibly be insensitive but, yes, of course it is very tone deaf.

This. It would certainly stop me attending. There are plenty of people without ANY spare cash. Many children will be missing out

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 03/05/2023 17:34

It sounds to me like a notice that you can't pay for things by card and a reminder that it's a fundraiser so please be as generous as possible.

It does. Not. Rhyme.

'CASH ONLY PLEASE' - See how easy that was?

HazyDragon · 03/05/2023 17:35

Do they just mean 'bring change'?

But yeah, I can see how that phrasing may get annoy people.

They'd be missing out at a fete where you pay for things anyway.

Yes, well, not everyone works as a professional communications copywriter. They're volunteers trying to big up a cash-based fundraiser. If you're that offended by how they choose to let you know, don't go.

Tarantullah · 03/05/2023 17:38

Its such a mystery why people don't want to work or volunteer in schools.

CandlelightGlow · 03/05/2023 17:38

@Dodgeitornot

P.s. My disgust is aimed at the people who underfund school i.e. the government. Not exactly sure how that is mutually exclusive with finding this "rhyme" shitty and insensitive to families who can't spare "lots of cash".

Thegoodbadandugly · 03/05/2023 17:41

Schools are seriously underfunded it takes a lot of hard work and man power to do events so your children can read and write.

Dodgeitornot · 03/05/2023 17:35

Yeah I don't have to go as it's not my school. But that is literally the point people are making. It's obviously going to make some families who are stretched thin feel awkward about going and I think that's really unfair.

drpet49 · 03/05/2023 17:44

Meepledeep · 03/05/2023 17:25

People really do find offense or outrage in anything, soon no one will bother communicating with anyone else ffs. It's a school fete, I'm sure they're not going to check people have indeed brought loads of cash. Fuck me how depressing this country is, schools can never do right for wrong either.

Completely agree with this.

Are you assuming what people think? I grew up in poverty and was never offended or upset by stuff like this but often others would be condescending to my parents and assume they were upset/offended about stuff which was worse. I am also a black woman and people are often offended on behalf on us about things we aren't arsed about.

NameChange647 · 03/05/2023 17:45

I'm one of the least offended people ever and I roll my eyes at most of the threads on here but I do actually think it should have been worded better. Then could have wrote cash only no card machines 🤷🏻‍♀️. Bring lots of cash could make a lot of parents and children feel like shit if they are struggling and could put parents off going if they are worried they will need loads of cash.

It was just a thoughtless way of wording it and I'm sure the person who wrote it would feel bad if they realised it had made anyone feel rubbish so I wouldn't be too annoyed.

'They'
What - the pta? - so, parents like you are.
Giving their time for free to help everyone's children at the school.
Here's an idea - if you don't like it - you do the marketing. Because 'they' are the 'you if you could be arsed.'

NeatCompactSleeper · 03/05/2023 17:45

Bring your sausage and mash
The tombola is pucker
So give it a bash
You tight little fucker

Now THAT'S a rhyme 😁

GoTeamTired · 03/05/2023 17:46

Roll your eye or join the PTA and influence the wording.

Choose your battles with the school, there might be a time where you or your child really need their support and interventions. By then, you don't want to be known as 'that mum'.

It's a fundraising fete. Why would you go if you're stretched thin? I don't get this obsession with inclusion at all costs. Why on earth would I go to a fundraising fete if I don't have money to donate?

tennesseewhiskey1 · 03/05/2023 17:47

Ffs. The professionally offended!!!

Trez1510 · 03/05/2023 17:49

@Queestuproblema how did your meeting with the HT go? Did they agree to sack the PTA volunteers? 🙄

Needmorelego · 03/05/2023 17:49

It's amazing really.... PTAs organise events and fundraisers - people moan about it.
The one year they don't for some reason - people moan about it and go on how X school down the road had pony rides and "why doesn't our school do that?".
The PTA can't win whatever they do.

TempyBrennan · 03/05/2023 17:50

Mountain out of a molehill.

RunningRunningRunningRunningRunning · 03/05/2023 17:54

Most people don't carry cash now, it's often an issue at our events. Most kids bring a few quid, if that. Maybe they should have worded it better eg "bring some change" but the whole point in these things is to raise a bit of money. Not everyone is destitute, some people can afford to donate, school would be shooting themselves in the foot if they stopped all fund raising.

We have a constant stream of requests, for the coronation our school are doing a sponsored event, instead of collecting bits of change they have requested all money is bank transferred. Doesn't sound like they are expecting 50p from aunty pam 🤣. I will just ignore, we give so much, I'm not transferring them money! We can technically afford it but I draw the line with some things. Many parents will be sending money though.

Just ignore it!
