AIBU to suggests cafes should have to cover their food?

There's a cafe in my local park that I go to with my dc.

They sell lovely cakes and usually have around 5 an the counter.

However I hardly ever end up buying them as they are left uncovered.

AIBU to suggest every food establishment should cover the food they are selling?

If anyone knows if I can report to the food standards agency please let me know

Pollution/dust/saliva/poo/germ particles falling on them

Oh come on! Poo germs? 🤔. From where?

We don't and shouldn't live in a sterile world, for our own good.

Pinkdelight3 · 03/05/2023 16:23

@BadgerFacedCoo Ha ha, probably happens in all parks to be fair! Then a nice slice of cake to follow

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 03/05/2023 16:23

YANBU, they should be covered. It's hardly a huge precaution to take but it seems so much more hygienic.

hoven · 03/05/2023 16:25

@KnickerlessParsons from farts! Many illnesses are transferred through faeces

I agree. I don’t buy from places where cakes are uncovered either so they are definitely loosing sales. Sometimes you can see flies buzzing and it’s very unpleasant.
However I wouldn’t have a quiet or loud or whatever word with them if it’s local some people are really touchy and can’t handle criticism reasonably,

StrugglingWeight · 03/05/2023 16:26

I'm with you on uncovered cakes outside OP

However I think food standards agency os a bit extreme. You could just contact the business? As evident by this thread plenty of people are happy to eat uncovered cakes, and it's not a hidden lack of hygiene step so I think it's more of a don't like it don't buy it scenario

KimberleyClark · 03/05/2023 16:28

I said upthread I thought it a good idea, but I meant from the standpoint of flies getting on the food. I really don’t think airborne poo particles are a threat.

But if farts are a problem, then you’re breathing them in while in the cafe.

Its not a transmission method.

Sudeko · 03/05/2023 16:30

I hate it too but it is not going away. I see it all the time at the farmer's markets and even the food trucks in shopping precincts. like 200 sugar coated doughnuts stacked into a wall. I saw somebody drop their phone into a nata display and fish it out. The natas were not replaced. There were also energetic little kids scooting up and touching them to point them out to their parents. Two little girls seemed to be fast tagging all the different varieties. It is grim.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 03/05/2023 16:30

They should be covered. Flies will get on them and the first thing a fly does when it lands is throw up, and the last thing a fly in a park walked on was probably a dog turd. At least the meat in a butchers gets cooked thoroughly, a cake is just eaten as is. It isn't difficult to cover cakes with some kind of fly screen or a glass or plastic dome.

hoven · 03/05/2023 16:32

@StrugglingWeight I have asked if they have any cakes in the back that are covered and they just say no. So not sure they would react positively to criticism

Don’t the people who are farting near the cakes wear pants?

Lulu1919 · 03/05/2023 16:34

Bonbon21 · 03/05/2023 15:32

I completely agree with OP.
A lovely cafe opened up near me at the beginning of 2022. Great coffee.. homemade cakes etc look amazing. All lying on the counter beside the till..no covering of any kind .. people leaning over them to reach the card machine...
I will never order or taste any of them......

Agree
Quite a few cafes where I live don't cover cakes etc ...some are at mouth level some where you lean over to pay or order ...it's just not hygienic and we don't use those coffee shops.

hoven · 03/05/2023 16:35

@FrownPrincess yes but the fact we can smell them means there are particles in the air. It's the poo particles we are smelling there is no such thing as fart

Don’t the people who are farting near the cakes wear pants?

Not necessarily. The young lady who was in front of me in the queue at a bubble tea place was wearing a micro mini dress and the smell was overpowering so I would think that for instance, a thong would not contain it.

GeraltsBathtub · 03/05/2023 16:37

Jumped the shark with the farts I think OP

FrownPrincess · 03/05/2023 16:38

I agree that the cakes should be covered due to saliva and various germs from people breathing over them.

hoven · 03/05/2023 16:42

@CindersAgain yes but I'm in the cafe for 10 minutes max. The cakes are there all day

Quite.

No one has ever got ill from somebody farting near a cake FFS.

Nordicrain · 03/05/2023 16:46

Many/ most cafes have them behind glass but open to the side behind the counter. is that ok? Because these awful fart particle presumably don't care which side they come from.

If you don't want the cakes don't have them, but don't go reporting them. That's unnecessary.

People fart in the supermarket
People fart on the bus
People fart in the office
People fart when they are collecting their kids from school
People fart in the GP waiting room
People fart wherever you go.

YANBU when I was a student I worked in a Dublin city centre cafe about 30 years ago. We had uncovered cakes by the till. The cafe owner allowed local university science students do a study investigating the amount of bacteria on the uncovered cakes in comparison to the biscuits in packets. The uncovered cakes had everything skin, faces both human and animal etc can't remember exactly. Particularly bad close to money transactions. The owner never had an uncovered cake after that. Surprised some places still do

KnickerlessParsons · 03/05/2023 16:51

hoven · 03/05/2023 16:25

@KnickerlessParsons from farts! Many illnesses are transferred through faeces

But not from farts.

Lcb123 · 03/05/2023 16:52

I wouldn’t even notice this? As long as the cakes are being served by the staff, not customers touching them.

Lcb123 · 03/05/2023 16:53

And please think twice before reporting an independent small business. You could ruin the owners livelihood and life, for the sale on an over obsession with hygiene
