Funny feeling has washed over me

Watching TV, multi-tasking scrolling those Facebook videos. This is what I do often. I am prone to anxious spells but haven’t really had any triggers today, did sleep badly last night and have had a virus this weekend.
I had a weird feeling come over me. I can’t describe it well but was just a sense of dread. Googling it and it seems to fit ‘impending doom’. Difficult to say that for sure as I’ve never experienced it before and I guess the term is a very subjective experience

I am a worrier anyway but I’m now worrying extra that I somehow have a sixth sense that something bad is going to happen. Do you think anxiety could also be a culprit? AIBU to be worried about this?

This could definitely be anxiety, can you stop ruminating and focus on something else - speak to a friend, read a book, keep your brain occupied and focused on something else?

It's a horrible feeling I remember it well when I had anxiety! Feels so real!

Aquamarine1029 · 02/05/2023 21:48

This feeling is very common with anxiety, and it's also known to happen before having a heart attack, although anxiety is the best bet. How old are you?

Only mid 20s.

Are you feeling ok physically? The impending doom feeling can be a sign of sepsis

broadbeanquiche · 02/05/2023 21:54

I get this feeling occasionally. Sometimes something has happened but I think this must be confirmation bias as I get it at other times and nothing happens.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/05/2023 21:54

My bet is that it's anxiety and probably hormone related. I would start keeping track of the ups and downs of your anxiety to see if there is a connection with your cycle.

Yes absolutely fine as I only had a cold. I don’t know if I possibly saw an upsetting video or something, I was scrolling for at least an hour! Thought before there’s no way it’s healthy for my or anyone else’s attention span

I used to get this a lot! I think it was my anxiety kicking in before I actually had anything to worry about ... now I worry about everything
I hope you feel better soon, it passes and you'll be fine

ILikePizzas · 02/05/2023 21:55

Get off the internet? Seriously - taking a few days off might help.

Hazey19 · 02/05/2023 21:56

I get this a lot. It is anxiety. Hope it passes soon xx

Wonford · 02/05/2023 21:57

Sounds like the precursor to an anxiety attack. Take lots of deep breaths and try and get an early night.

JustKeepSlimming · 02/05/2023 21:58

I get this sometimes - I have anxiety which is mostly under control, but sometimes if I've had a virus or something I do get a weird dread feeling. Nothing bad has ever actually happened in connection with it though.

JustKeepSlimming · 02/05/2023 21:59

Ps I sometimes wonder if it's because having a cold has affected my breathing or something.

ThingsthatgoBumpintheDay · 02/05/2023 21:59

I get exactly that & then a dissociative feeling. Like I’m looking at myself through my own body but I’m not me. It’s hard to explain, it usually follows with a massive panic attack unless I knock it on the head with some anxiety calming methods/videos before hand.

I hope you’re feeling okay now. X

GeneHuntsCowboyBoots · 02/05/2023 22:00

Definitely anxiety! Anxiety can manifest in sooooo many ways. I recommend the Dare app - there’s free stuff and some that you pay for but the free stuff is good too. Take it easy, anxiety sucks.

A - you slept badly
B- you had a virus last week
C - you are prone to anxiety

Your mind has gone into overdrive and is frantically connecting the dots - it's decided 1+1+1 = 752. Because of this your body is saying "wow - the mind is worried, let's fire up the fight or flight responses because we really might be in mortal danger."

So you feel this change in your body and that convinces you that there's something really wrong and hence the cycle begins.

Do some box breathing - - and get some sleep. That's what your brain and body need above all right now.

I get this. I have temporal lobe epilepsy. It’s often misdiagnosed as anxiety. I don’t have grand mal seizures and I don’t lose consciousness… turns out seizures are not always how they look in the movies. Impending sense of doom/ dread is a hallmark of TLE. However, it can also be anxiety.

Thank you very much everyone for your kindness and non-judgmental advice. I think an early night for the next couple of nights is in order! Must replace boredom scrolling with something more productive, too.

This is excellent. Me & my little boy do this together just for meditation. It’s brilliant x

CorrodedCoffin · 02/05/2023 22:13

I have generalised anxiety disorder and can confirm the random flash of dread is a common sign of anxiety. The fact that you’re also now considering it to be some kind of sixth sense and worrying about that is also a sign of anxiety. I can’t say for sure what brought it on, but you say yourself you’re prone to anxious bouts and you didn’t sleep well - not exactly the same thing but a part of my anxiety is suffering sensory overload. I don’t get it too often which is great, but when it comes on it can be quite sudden - I actually had a really nice day today, but when I got home I was quite tired and all of a sudden the tiniest inconvenience set me off and I started panicking and couldn’t think straight or be around any loud noises. My point being, unfortunately anxiety can be a bit unpredictable, but the best thing to do if you’re really worried about it is to talk to a doctor, and maybe make a plan for how you can try to calm yourself down/cheer yourself up if you have one of these episodes again.

TitoMojito · 02/05/2023 22:17

I have anxiety and can relate to this, especially the part about the sixth sense. Sometimes the feeling of dread is so bad I want to call up everyone I know and tell them to to sit in the middle of the living room floor for the day so they can't be injured - but I know that's irrational. I know I can't really be sensing impending doom this often - especially since usually nothing bad happens.

Be kind to yourself, OP. It's a horrible feeling but it will pass.

SapphosRock · 02/05/2023 22:20

Worrying it could be a heart attack, sepsis or epilepsy will not help the anxiety.

afty · 02/05/2023 22:21

I have anxiety but get the “doom” feeling worse when I’ve been drinking too much caffeine - it’s a horrible feeling. I hope you feel better soon

Newname2323 · 02/05/2023 22:23

Before I was prescribed medication for anxiety and OCD, I had this regularly. It feels like your waiting for something terrible to happen but I promise you you don't have a sixth sense and nothing bad is going to happen.
