Could a 3 year old and 1 year old share a bed?

Wanting to buy an antique single bed, it's longer and a few inches wider than a standard single. Would I be ridiculous to think my three year old and one year old could both sleep in it?

Yea I think that's ridiculous. Sorry. Why would they need to share? Also it's a potential safeguarding red flag apparently.

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 02/05/2023 21:25

For how long??

dementedpixie · 02/05/2023 21:25

How long would you want them to share?
Are they the same sex or opposite sex?

SunnySaturdayMorning · 02/05/2023 21:26

YABU. They need their own space, for safety as much as anything else.

dementedpixie · 02/05/2023 21:26

Surely a 1 year old would still be in a cot anyway so why would they need to share?

cadburyegg · 02/05/2023 21:27

I wouldn't make my dc share a bed at any age unless on a temporary basis / extenuating circumstances

If they choose to, that's different but imo all children should have their own bed

GeraltsBathtub · 02/05/2023 21:27

Why would they share? And would you be putting sides on it to stop them falling out?

depre · 02/05/2023 21:27

Wanting to buy an antique single bed,

Why?

110APiccadilly · 02/05/2023 21:28

Both your children must be much more peaceful sleepers than mine!

Do you mean all the time as a regular thing or very occasionally, e.g. when grandparents are staying and you need to free up a bed? Because I think the first is unworkable and unfair on the children, and the second might be possible, maybe "top and tailing" the children.

Skybluepinky · 02/05/2023 21:28

No, not a good idea.

dementedpixie · 02/05/2023 21:29

My 2 have only shared for a night or so when younger on holiday. I wouldn't consider it a longer term option

Whatames · 02/05/2023 21:32

My girls share at 7 and 9. But they each have their own bed and choose to share a single. I think they should have the choice

Doyoumind · 02/05/2023 21:33

Why would you want to do this? It's not even vaguely practical.

Poppins2016 · 02/05/2023 21:33

Putting the reservations that previous posters mentioned aside... I can't see it working. Both my 4 and 1.5 year old are super wriggly in bed and often lose the covers, I'm sure it would only get worse if they shared. Plus they'd disturb each others sleep being in such close proximity.

loudbatperson · 02/05/2023 21:33

Why?

Children need their own beds.

Kendodd · 02/05/2023 21:33

Going against the grain here, I think a one year old and a three year old might actually be happier in bed together. I wouldn't do it for more than a year though.
On a second point, I'd rethink buying this antique bed thing.

DanceMonster · 02/05/2023 21:34

Why can’t they have a bed each?

Oysterbabe · 02/05/2023 21:34

Top and tail for the odd night at a sleepover? Fine. As a permanent arrangement? No.

Floralnomad · 02/05/2023 21:34

What an odd thing to want to do , if you want an antique bed you sleep in it and let your children have their own spaces .

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/05/2023 21:37

Sounds like it’s an American twin as they are 3 inches wider than a standard British single. My 2YO DS has one, it was bought for his older sister when we lived in the US. No you can’t fit 2 kids in it! Well maybe top and tailing for a sleepover but it won’t exactly be comfortable. And you can’t get bedding here so the fitted sheets are a stretch. Put your 1YO in a cot and go to ikea to get your 3YO a normal bed.

parietal · 02/05/2023 21:37

well it was common a few hundred years ago (think 'Little House on the Prairie') but would be considered pretty odd now.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/05/2023 21:38

My daughters shared a bed for years, their choice. It was a double though, and not when they were very tiny (then they were in with me).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/05/2023 21:58

You know they're going to get much bigger pretty quickly don't you?
Even children need their own space.

RampantIvy · 02/05/2023 22:01

Why is the OP prioritising buying buying an antique bed over the comfort and safety of her DC?

This is bonkers.

lionsleepstonight · 02/05/2023 22:04

The bedding issue would put me off for starters.

My 1 year old would fall out a proper bed, so a no thank you from me!
