To go to Hospital - pregnant.

This morning at 8am I experienced almost fainting. I had to hold on to the kitchen sides stop myself and get myself lying down before I fainted. I had ringing in my ears and broke into a hot sweat, I also could see the capillaries in my eyes. I've never experienced this before. I'm 21 weeks pregnant. It's my second pregnancy.

I rang the midwife advice line and was told this is quite common, and probably because I hadn't eaten yet. She didn't seem concerned. I've since eaten and drank plenty, but I am still feeling very hot and dizzy when I stand up and move around, for instance walking up and down the stairs. I'm getting concerned that this is ongoing.

I know nobody can say / know for sure, but should I go to hospital in these circumstances? The midwife didn't seem concerned earlier on the phone and I don't want to waste their time. Has anyone experienced this in their pregnancy before?

I absolutely would get this checked out

gamerchick · 02/05/2023 10:31

What's your iron levels like?

WinterofOurDiscountTentz · 02/05/2023 10:33

Go to your GP.

Lapro · 02/05/2023 10:33

@gamerchick It was on the lowish side last time it was checked, but not enough to be prescribed iron tablets. I was advised just to take the normal pregnancy vitamins.

I get this quite a lot (34w), and was also told it was normal. My iron levels and urine all normal. I just have to sit down and put my feet up tbh.

depre · 02/05/2023 10:34

I would phone my GP for this. I'm not sure what you mean by 'go to hospital' though? Have you access to specialist maternity ward or do you mean A&E?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/05/2023 10:36

If you have a Pregnancy Assessment Unit or similar then I'd call them (rather than labour/delivery ward), and ask if you can go in to be checked.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 02/05/2023 10:37

I fainted a couple of months ago and went to the GP. You probably need checking there (blood pressure etc). I don't think there's a benefit to going to hospital.

SainsBrie · 02/05/2023 10:38

I had this a lot in my second pregnancy. You need a GP for bloods and BP. It’s unlikely to be anything.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/05/2023 10:40

Yes get checked. It is likely to be fine, but you do need to be seen to make sure .

hotcrossmummie · 02/05/2023 10:42

Always go and get checked. That's what they are there for. Let us know how it goes.

Lapro · 02/05/2023 10:43

Thanks I will call the GP, but I doubt they will see me today, usually its weeks to see anyone. Hopefully they will see me as a priority or I can go to the Pregnancy Unit at the hospital.

Hopefully you'll have luck with your GP, mine has been good during pregnancy and always fits me in quickly the same day.

ezbez · 02/05/2023 10:46

It's common in pregnancy, I wouldn't take any action.

TinaYouFatLard · 02/05/2023 10:46

I’d call the midwife back. I fainted while viewing a house while pregnant with DTs.

Spottycarousel · 02/05/2023 10:48

I fainted in public while pregnant. Scary but its very common.

PinkPink1 · 02/05/2023 10:51

I’m 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I feel faint pretty much every morning, even if I have eaten. Sometimes I feel super dizzy as well as faint. I lie down for half an hour and then I’m ok. This has been happening on and off for a few weeks now, but almost every day for the past couple of weeks. My iron levels are fine as they were checked at my 28 week appointment. Apparently this is normal in pregnancy.

Lapro · 02/05/2023 10:55

Thanks, I feel more reassured now. It was just me and DS(8) this morning before the school run, I was panicking that he'd not know what to do if I'd completely fainted!

I'm going to call the GP and hope to see someone.

BU to go to hospital but not U to get it checked.

I'd ask your GP if they will let you check your own blood pressure, or go to a pharmacist both my GP and pharmacist allows this to anyone that wants to check.

Also I used to eat something before getting out of bed, seemed to help. Are you trying to get more iron into your diet?

depre · 02/05/2023 11:02

You could always ask to see one of the nurses

ActDottie · 02/05/2023 11:32

I’d get checked out for peace of mind. My friend had something similar in her pregnancy so she had to be really hot on monitoring her temperature eg. We went out for a meal so she went outside every so often and also sucked on ice

StillWantingADog · 02/05/2023 11:35

I had this at about the same stage in pregnancy and it was def quite disconcerting. It’s only been a couple of hours…..
lie down if you can and try and have a proper rest. If still no better after lunch I’d contact the gp. But no harm in calling gp now if you’re worried.

Frabbits · 02/05/2023 11:55

If you are worried then get checked out, whether that is by your GP or at the hospital. Even if it's nothing they absolutely will not mind seeing you.

buckingmad · 02/05/2023 12:01

I had this a lot when I was pregnant. I was anaemic. I went on iron tablets and just made sure I constantly had snacks and water close to hand.

Lapro · 02/05/2023 14:07

The GP has given me an appointment for tomorrow morning...

In the last 20 minutes I've started to feeling tightness in my chest and short of breath, so really feel like I should be checked out today. I'm going to give the Pregnancy Unit a call.
