Just shut the bloody school!?!

1 class open in the whole primary school, NOT Year 6. For the sixth time this year, my DC has to go to school while most of the school is off. I'd much rather have an extra day with my DC.

Is it fair on the other years that one class has 6 days extra attendance and education. Equally, is it fair that my DC class have missed out on upto 6 extra days with fanily, benefitting from off-peak price days out and some extra downtime?

AIBU to think school should just offer 30 spaces for families who really need it, rather than having one class in!?
I know lots of parents are struggling for childcare, give them by DC place!

Bloody hell teachers can't win, can they.

Nevermind31 · 02/05/2023 07:54

Strike days are not for off peak family days out. You haven’t “missed” out

TrafficWardenRampage · 02/05/2023 07:55

Goodness your priorities are skewed.

arethereanyleftatall · 02/05/2023 07:56

Oh fgs, think. Most parents want their kids to go to school. The school are doing their best. They can't please everyone can they.

Circleoffifths · 02/05/2023 07:56

You are being ridiculous.

Get a grip.

Ocularpatdown · 02/05/2023 07:56

Just keep them off and enjoy a day out.

EmmaEmerald · 02/05/2023 07:57

I'm confused
you're complaining your DC teachers aren't on strike?

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 02/05/2023 07:57

Teachers are striking so your children can have a better education in the long run.
They're not striking because they fancy a day off after the Bank Holiday.
However I do understand that especially in primary school one off and one in would make things tricky.

Buddrinker84 · 02/05/2023 07:57

Don't send them in and take advantage of the off peak fun. 🤷

hoophoophooray · 02/05/2023 07:58

6 extra family days? Are you serious? I'm very lucky in that my primary child is in school and my secondary ones are old enough to be left, but 6 days of extra random childcare to find would be hideous.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 02/05/2023 07:58

Keep them off school then 😂

Pottedpalm · 02/05/2023 07:58

Unbeliveable!

This is rdiculous OP. Your DC is receiving the education he is meant to have. Don't make out like they are doing your a disservice.

PuttingDownRoots · 02/05/2023 07:59

Of the teacher isn't striking (likely due to wrong union) they need to be in work doing their job. They can't cover anyone else. Ergo your child's class can be open, but they can't cover a Yr6 class or emergency childcare.

SeriousFaffing · 02/05/2023 07:59

Sounds like you’ve had no need to find 6 extra days of childcare then. Are all of the parents of the children in that same position?

Chikeletta · 02/05/2023 08:00

I'm not unsympathetic to childcare issues which is why I think it would be better to offer the spaces to families that need it. I will be penalised of my child misses school even on a strike day.

The government has told schools that they should be open as much as possible. If your child’s teacher is in the head can’t very well shut the class anyway! Heads can’t win!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 02/05/2023 08:00

It's a GOOD thing that your child isn't getting his education so disrupted like the rest of the school kids.

I have 1 out of 3 kids in school, my other 2 are secondary school so to me it should be more important that they are in school but that's not what's happened.

Strike days aren't for family days out.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/05/2023 08:01

God this is a weird post. It’s great if your child is getting his education today - it’s the ones who are off who are missing out (thanks to the government).

Also, talking about days out is so tone deaf - not only do many people have no money for days out, or kids who are missing free school lunches today, but working parents are scrabbling around trying to find some sort of childcare for the day. Not going on off peak days out!

You won't be penalised for one day off 🙄

Windowcleaning · 02/05/2023 08:01

The teachers are taking industrial action over their pay and conditions.

If you want there to be any teachers still teaching as your child goes through school, maybe think of it like this, rather than them not facilitating your family life?

Keep your child off if you like.

DonnaBanana · 02/05/2023 08:03

YABU thinking that a school should rearrange its classes when industrial action is taking place. However, I do think it’s a bit grim one teacher is holding out and refusing to strike. They should be supporting their coworkers.

If they aren’t a member of a union I don’t think they can strike?

On a personal note, we would. DC attendance already low due to two bouts of Covid and a tummy bug - attendance being monitored and threat of a fine so have to keep attendance up.
