Just shut the bloody school!?!

1 class open in the whole primary school, NOT Year 6. For the sixth time this year, my DC has to go to school while most of the school is off. I'd much rather have an extra day with my DC.

Is it fair on the other years that one class has 6 days extra attendance and education. Equally, is it fair that my DC class have missed out on upto 6 extra days with fanily, benefitting from off-peak price days out and some extra downtime?

AIBU to think school should just offer 30 spaces for families who really need it, rather than having one class in!?
I know lots of parents are struggling for childcare, give them by DC place!

The school is not the one able to make the decision here.

The one teacher not striking is likely in the 'wrong' union, or not yet in one and therefore cannot legally strike.

The government have stated that schools must remain open where teachers are in.

More teachers are striking this time because the pay offer was to be taken out of school budgets. More unions are balloting for strike action. This situation is likely to continue until schools are properly funded so they can retain teachers and perhaps even teach children. Strap yourself in.

I'd be greatful school qre doing their upmost to keep yr 6 in.

Year 6 teachers aren't allowed to strike as SATs tests start next week.

Hbh17 · 02/05/2023 09:34

OP, you should be extremely grateful that your child is in school, because that is where they're supposed to be. These strikes are so damaging, so I'm baffled that you want your child's education to be even more disrupted.

PurpleWisteria1 · 02/05/2023 09:37

If your child isn’t in school you don’t take them for an off peak day out ffs.
Whats wrong with people?
OP you are very fortunate that your child has had 6 days extra schooling as are they. You sound like my 13 year old grumbling that she has to go in for ‘stupid lessons’
You are a parent. Grow Up.

I am sympathetic to the teachers and understand why they are striking.

What I don't agree with, however, is striking in the middle of the exam period. This is totally outrageous and they are making our teens suffer for their cause.

“Their cause” is your teens though, and every other teen coming through the system.
A majority of whom don’t have subject specialists teaching them.
On the plus side the government could make some concessions for this years exam cohorts like the last couple of years as they have probably been impacted much more than the last 2 cohorts because of covid.

The best time to strike is when it causes an impact.

How is teacher pay affecting children’s education?
Schools can’t recruit or retrain staff. That’s how. And the ones that are still hanging on in there are facing the consequences of that and it’s making them ill in many cases. One unfilled post has a domino effect on everything else: behaviour, attainment, class sizes, workload, teacher stress. And there are thousands of unfilled posts and hardly anyone coming up through training.

My 2 in secondary school are doing online learning today and my 2 in primary school have an inset day. Inset days are very precious to us as they mean an off peak trip out where everything is less crowded. Or a trip to soft play where they can stay for longer than 2 hours. Which for my autistic children is very important. But they've lost that today because I have to stand over my 12 year old with adhd to make sure he is doing the work set. I don't mind the teachers striking but I really struggle with getting my younger 3 to do online learning. Thankfully the eldest gets on with it without any help.

Baneofmyexistence · 02/05/2023 09:40

Is it not SATs next week? I was a teacher for years, I never would have gone on strike the week before SATs if I was teaching y6. Definitely best for y6 to be in this week.

Year 6 teachers aren't allowed to strike as SATs tests start next week.

That's not true. All year 6 classes are out at my school. The SATs are not relevant to the children they are just another thing imposed on schools by the government that has no benefit for children.

Next week's extra bank holiday, organised by the government during SATs week, shows even how little the government cares about disruption they themselves cause to schools.

I would imagine when deciding which weekend to hold the coronation on, they had slightly more pressing concerns than sats week. And I’m saying that as a parent of two kids currently in y6!

I dont think you have understood how strikes work.

I teach Year 6 and would happily strike even during SATs week. I believe SATs are unnecessary: they waste learning time, narrow the curriculum and cause unnecessary stress to children.

On a personal note, we would. DC attendance already low due to two bouts of Covid and a tummy bug - attendance being monitored and threat of a fine so have to keep attendance up.

And yet you're wishing they could miss another 6+ days of education.
Get a grip.

Islandofmisadventure · 02/05/2023 09:48

Unbelievable!

WhiteFire · 02/05/2023 09:48

Sats are being moved by one day, pupils are not missing out on any preparation for these. The bank holiday is neither here nor there in regards to that.

ShimmeringShirts · 02/05/2023 09:52

Oh yes, it’s absolutely disgusting your DC are getting an education. How dare the school keep just your DC class in, they’re purposefully trying to piss you off at this point 🙄🙄🙄

YABU thinking that a school should rearrange its classes when industrial action is taking place. However, I do think it’s a bit grim one teacher is holding out and refusing to strike. They should be supporting their coworkers.

I was thinking the same. I’d lose all respect for that miserable arse who will benefit from any gains achieved by striking staff members.

Year 6 teachers aren't allowed to strike as SATs tests start next week.

That's nonsense.

I love when people make assertions with no factual basis.

Our year 6 teachers have been out for every single strike day, including today.

Skybluepinky · 02/05/2023 09:55

Obviously nothing else to do today but moan.

wingingit1987 · 02/05/2023 09:55

I don’t think any of the teachers striking are doing so to let you save a few pound on softplay or cinema tickets.

Garbage. Y6 teacher on strike right here.

Rosula · 02/05/2023 09:58

If you're that keen on having your DCs at home, start home educating them.

ClareBlue · 02/05/2023 09:14

They took it down within 63 minutes, so credit to MN head office.

Yes that was good, I had to go out so missed it but glad they did it.

Highfivemum · 02/05/2023 10:01

It all depends on what Union the teachers are in. Not all teachers are striking. If a teacher goes in then that class could open. If a teacher strikes that class is closed. That is how ours have worked in primary.
