Why on earth are they so uncomfortable! Why hasn't someone invented a more comfortable one? It can't be that difficult!

I’m really short, and it always hurts when I lean back at the sink. And I never feel that the hair at the nape of my neck is being washed and rinsed properly either. Though I’d the alternative is to be on all fours facing the sink and leaning my head over, I’m not sure I’d take that alternative!

MamaDollyorJesus · 30/04/2023 21:40

@Exaspa my hairdresser has something similar & it's not a fancy salon either it's the local old lady salon in my mums village.

I always used to find I was too short & had to strain my neck to reach the cut out bit of the bowl when I was younger & that was before the obligatory scalding of my scalp as the junior asked "is the water ok for you?"

To the PP asking where you look - makes no difference as I have to take my specs off & can't see a thing anyway.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 30/04/2023 21:41

Ugh I hate this too, and I actually like the hair washing part I just wish the sinks weren’t so uncomfortable!

I read about someone having a stroke or something after using one and it scares me now

Me too!

What is wrong with hairdressers' sinks? I've never had any problem with them, or found them uncomfortable? Genuine question, I'm just a bit baffled.

Me neither. I lean back and enjoy the head massage 🤣

LynetteScavo · 30/04/2023 22:19

Surely it's about the neck cushion thingy being soft enough? And the sink being adjustable, and moved to the right position? I think hairdressers sinks have got more comfortable in recent years.

BlueMoonCity · 30/04/2023 22:26

I've never been able to use them due to my chiari malformation (buggered up spine basically) but my mum has said they're very uncomfortable!

thenightsky · 30/04/2023 22:30

They seem to always manage to soap up the nape of my neck, but then never rinse it off afterwards. I always have to point out that my neck still feels soapy to get them to aim the water at it.

PinkRiceKrispies · 30/04/2023 22:34

Hate having my hair washed. Feels really childish for some reason.
My salon always pours water into my ears as well and when I looked at the Google reviews, everyone else was saying the same thing. Hate the hairdressers.

Rightsraptor · 30/04/2023 22:36

I hate when the hairdresser leans against the sink which they usually do. I sit down, & get as comfortable as I can. The sink tilts up and down a bit so, when the hairdresser leans against it, it stretches my brachial plexus and I get that nerve pain shooting down my neck.

SlightlyJaded · 30/04/2023 22:37

i slide myself forward so that my neck isn't bent too far back. I then make a point of sliding back for a short time to give access to nape, then forward I slide again.

I think you have to be a bit pro-active about getting comfortable and moving for access.

No idea it could be dangerous though. I'm a natural worrying so brilliant - thanks for that! 🙄

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 22:40

@LynetteScavo there is no cushion!

otherwayup · 30/04/2023 22:42

I have a ganglion (it's a non sinister lump!) on the back of my head from damage from those bloody sinks!!!
A hairdresser, over 30 years ago, pushed down so hard while massaging my head that it caused it.
I've never been able to have my hair washed at hairdressers since and can only go somewhere that does dry cuts 😂

SiblingFights · 30/04/2023 22:45

I had no idea about the stroke risk. How scary

Knittinglikemad · 30/04/2023 22:45

My local hairdressers just a little locally owned salon has the flat bed style & it was so comfortable, no strain on my neck at all.

stepMummY1 · 30/04/2023 22:46

I have to sit on a cushion 😂 and yes agree they can be very uncomfortable. Some of the washers push the sink down on your neck as well. Eyes closed.

TMess · 30/04/2023 22:46

I have a little bit of neck damage from other things and I’m always trying not to die while I’m in their chair. It hurts SO badly. But my stylist is amazing and my hair looks good. 🥴

bellamountain · 30/04/2023 22:51

Whenever I get up from the hair salon sink, my vision goes patchy with lots of white light. Hard to explain but it takes a while to go away and makes me feel lightheaded. Lifelong migraine sufferer not too dissimilar to focal migraine. Can't be right can it?

nofusspot · 30/04/2023 20:30

I read about someone having a stroke or something after using one and it scares me now

I remember reading that it was a long time ago and I’d always found the sinks really painful so I decided to from then on go with freshly washed wet hair that I’d done at home !

SirVixofVixHall · 30/04/2023 22:54

I hate them. I have a neck issue so they give me a headache, and I worry about the stroke risk. I now explain that they really hurt my neck, and just stand up with my head bend over the sink , face down. It isn’t madly comfortable either but not anywhere near as bad.

No absolutely not right. You need to tell them this if you go again

sasamummy · 30/04/2023 23:27

I lived in Japan years ago during the 1990's and the first time I went to the hairdresser there I was dead nervous. The chairs pull out into flat stretchers and you lie down when at the sink. It was totally awesome and so comfortable! I can't believe we still use the old neck crackers over here.

ballsdeep · 30/04/2023 23:28

Sunraes · 30/04/2023 20:59

Same here. Never. 😅 But tbf I do go to an expensive hairdresser.

Only the peasants have uncomfortable hair dresser sinks, clearly 🤓
