That keeping still does not stop you being stung by wasps

I always run away and the two people I know that have stayed still have both been stung! Obviously very small sample size but would be interesting to hear stories.

Always stung by not running away

avocadotofu · 30/04/2023 17:03

I've never been stung when I've stood still.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 30/04/2023 17:06

I'm a runner / flapper / yeller, and I've never been stung 😄.

Topseyt123 · 30/04/2023 17:06

I just detest the fuckers anyway and refuse to stay still to let one land on me. I can't remember the last time I got stung, and I have my fingers crossed now that it continues.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/04/2023 17:07

How does screaming, flapping about and generally acting in a way that makes it clear to a wasp that you're trying to kill them help?

Other than the late summer kamikaze wasps who are pissed and dying or defenders of the homestead, they don't really give a shit about humans as they're looking for caterpillars or wood. Until you move and they can tell you're a threat.

Simianwalk · 30/04/2023 17:08

I've been stuck about 15 times. Honestly I can run or stand still and they want to kill me and sting me. I have now had two anaphylactic reactions and have to have an EpiPen so they might actually do it one day.

OddyCody · 30/04/2023 17:09

I had one try and fly under my visor of my helmet when I was riding a moped in Vietnam. I stood still, moved away slowly and it still wouldn’t leave me alone.

I’ve never ridden off faster and eventually outran it that way 😅

woollysocksandgloves · 30/04/2023 17:10

I've been stung twice on the neck while face painting, so I was about as still as I could have been. Fuckers. Have been stung on the elbow and foot as well. The last one was my fault for standing on it, but still 😂

Gourmetfelix · 30/04/2023 17:12

At work once I parked under a tree I had no idea was dripping tree sap that wasps apparently absolutely love. When I left for home, I shit you not, there were about 60 wasps on my car. After much self pep talking I calmly got into the car. Didn't get stung.

Lorrymum · 30/04/2023 17:12

I was stung yesterday, the little sod was on a clothes peg and I didn't notice until I was stung. I haven't been stung for years and it was incredibly painful.

mbosnz · 30/04/2023 17:15

I've had wasps and bees fly around my DH without a top on, to get to me, to sting merry fucking hell out of me (I didn't know what was going on, I was just passing by.). I don't know what I did in a past life, but wasps and bees hate me, and will do their best to search and sting. I run like buggery now! (I'm on the verge of needing an epipen, I seem to have built up to a life threatening allergy).

FlowersEverywherePlease · 30/04/2023 17:18

I've been laying still & got stung.
Running away is a better option imo.
Fuckers.

Nanny0gg · 30/04/2023 17:19

avocadotofu · 30/04/2023 17:03

I've never been stung when I've stood still.

I have.

Bastards

captncrunch · 30/04/2023 17:21

I think staying still works for bees who don't really want to sting and will sting if they feel threatened (by a flappy, jumpy person). Wasps are just bastards. I have been stung twice while sitting still, they have just landed and stung. I was once told wasps are territorial so will just attack if they think you're on their patch. Not sure if that's true but makes sense!

Redebs · 30/04/2023 17:24

I blow on them and when they realise I'm a large mammal, they fly away. Hasn't failed me yet.

Loria · 30/04/2023 17:28

Staying still makes no difference for me. A couple of times one's landed on me and I've stayed still and been stung. Bees will fly off but wasps sting from sheer fuckery.

BatildaB · 30/04/2023 17:30

Run away by all means but I find it annoying when someone else flaps a previously fairly calm wasp into a frenzy around other people or indoors.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 30/04/2023 17:37

All wasp lore is wrong. Sample size n=1.

I was walking along doing no harm, a wasp flew in and stung my hand - no provocation at all.

They’re vindictive little stripy b@stards.

BSB30 · 30/04/2023 17:42

Has anyone noticed that the sods actually chase you when you run away?

I run for dear life if there's one near me, also scream as I can't stand them. Once I was running, turned around and saw it dive bombing towards my head.

Hate them with a passion

GaspingGekko · 30/04/2023 17:46

The only times I have been stung have been shen someone nearby has flapped excessively at a wasp, getting it angry, then it stung me, or if I have accidentally squished one.
If you act calmly around them they don't feel threatened and won't sting anyone.

countvoncount · 30/04/2023 17:54

I don't know about wasps....but I'm a beekeeper (garden hive)
When bees sting, they leave some kind of pheromones behind and you're more predisposed to be stung again, as you've been a previous "threat"
I've never been stung btw, they literally ignore me, I can mow the lawn around the hive in a T-shirt no problem
My other half, well he's a flapper, and gets stung regularly, goes down like he's been shot 🙄

megletthesecond · 30/04/2023 17:56

Yanbu. They'll sting me whatever. Wasps leave me with an awful sting for weeks.
Bees are much nicer, only sting in defence and it doesn't hurt after a couple of days.

AuntMarch · 30/04/2023 17:59

Cousin and mum were both stung while keeping still. I can't remember which was which but one of them purposely froze and the b@$@* thing dive-bombed, the other hadn't even seen it coming and the sting was the first she knew of it.

MissyB1 · 30/04/2023 18:01

Weirdly I’ve only ever been stung whilst I was still - 4 separate times! I still keep still though! I can’t be doing with flapping screaming and dramatics.
