I was with my cousin and we were chatting about the cost of living and the price of washing powder, she has always bought the same brand her mother used but is now looking for something cheaper. I usually buy own brand or branded if it works out better, I said that I compare brands and decide what to buy by working out the cost per wash and she asked me how? I had to explain that I divide the total cost of the product by the number of washes (usually on the packageing) to see which worked out cheapest.
She was really surprised and said she never bothers to do that. I asked her if she looked at the price per kilo / 100g when comparing food and she doesn't do that either.

YANBU I always compare prices by looking at price per kilo / number of uses

YABU I don't compare prices per kilo / number of uses.

No I don't, I know I should though

smooththecat · 30/04/2023 16:26

I do, and it’s literally written on the labels in most shops.

Saffronn · 30/04/2023 16:26

A friend of mine was stunned that I did this. She didn’t understand why I’d bother doing the calculations to save a few pence.

The context is that we’re both lucky to be well off enough that in reality it doesn’t matter to us. But my mum grew up with very little money, so I suspect she learned the habit then and passed it on to me.

ChocolatGateaux · 30/04/2023 16:27

We always do! Its surprising the number of people who don't, though. We also meal plan every week.

Dortmunder · 30/04/2023 16:27

YANBU - I always look at price per kilo or litre.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 30/04/2023 16:27

Sometimes. There are brands I like better, but for example today doing my online shop, some potatoes are much more expensive per kilo so I go cheap. A potato is a potato if you ask me.

This. It's really helpful, they have it on the shelves, no need for calculations.

TheSnowyOwl · 30/04/2023 16:28

I stick with the same brands regardless of cost. I don’t even look at the alternatives.

Changingplace · 30/04/2023 16:28

Yeah my mum taught me to do this when I was younger and it’s stuck, don’t know why you wouldn’t want the best deal tbh, unless it’s a specific brand you’ll buy regardless.

Bobbybobbins · 30/04/2023 16:29

I always compare like this - can deffo save money doing this.

Oysterbabe · 30/04/2023 16:30

Yeah I always do that, so usually buy big family packs of meat etc and freeze some as its cheaper per 100g.

Floralnomad · 30/04/2023 16:30

YANBU , but I don’t swap around with laundry stuff because I stick with what I know nobody is allergic to . I also don’t use what my mum used .

mondaytosunday · 30/04/2023 16:31

Yes - not with washing powder but I compare dog food and cat food like this and other things by cost per 100gr. Packaging is very deceptive.

KrisAkabusi · 30/04/2023 16:31

Lidl and Aldi both have this on the price label on the shelf. I'm sure other supermarkets do do.

peachespeachespeaches · 30/04/2023 16:31

Why on earth wouldn't you shop like this? Surely it's the most logical cost effective way? Plus it's written on the majority of the price labels so it's not even like it's difficult.

Doggymummar · 30/04/2023 16:31

Of course. I online shop and filter it low to high then choose the best value

FatGirlSwim · 30/04/2023 16:32

No, I don’t do this. ADHD and lucky if I remember half the stuff I need, let alone doing sums.

Willmafrockfit · 30/04/2023 16:32

yes i do
i have struggled with money which was what persuaded me to do this

Stichintime · 30/04/2023 16:32

Always do this and get annoyed when one product is stated in killos, the other per unit.

This

My husband thinks I'm a maths whizz because I automatically know which item is better value for money when really all I'm doing is ready the label

Motheranddaughter · 30/04/2023 16:32

Look after the pennies
The way I look at it is if my DH and I aspens a £1 each less every day that is £730 per year and £14,600 over the 20 years we have been married

AdoraBell · 30/04/2023 16:33

I’ve always done this and taught my DC to do the same. I don’t always buy the cheapest, ie if I want the best chocolate chip cookies when I can afford them, but I know I’m splurging.

Xrays · 30/04/2023 16:33

I don’t actually measure out how much I use - I just know roughly how much liquid detergent to pour in and do that. When I’m buying it I just look for the cheapest largest bottle I can find - currently Tesco own brand cheapest one which is about £3.50 for a huge bottle.

DucksNewburyport · 30/04/2023 16:34

I partially do this. But there are some brands I prefer regardless of price.

SwitchDiver · 30/04/2023 16:35

I always look at the price per unit, but I don’t always buy the cheapest option.
