I was with my cousin and we were chatting about the cost of living and the price of washing powder, she has always bought the same brand her mother used but is now looking for something cheaper. I usually buy own brand or branded if it works out better, I said that I compare brands and decide what to buy by working out the cost per wash and she asked me how? I had to explain that I divide the total cost of the product by the number of washes (usually on the packageing) to see which worked out cheapest.
She was really surprised and said she never bothers to do that. I asked her if she looked at the price per kilo / 100g when comparing food and she doesn't do that either.

YANBU I always compare prices by looking at price per kilo / number of uses

YABU I don't compare prices per kilo / number of uses.

Yes I do for bigger things like detergent and dishwasher tablets. Easier when shopping online. Makes you realise the larger pack is better value if you can afford the outlay

Why wouldn't you compare, take frozen chips, the brand i buy comes in several pack sizes, these cost anything from £2.09/kg to £2.79/kg for the same chips .

Yes it’s not saying only get cheapest brand, but like above the Same chips can cost less in different sized bags

Im really surprised people don't check and compare! I always have done, as has DH. Both across brands and sizes of packages.

We also weigh out pasta, rice and potatoes before cooking to avoid waste.

I was teaching my 8 year old to compare 1litre prices for orange juice across the various carton sizes. For ages the 1l by itself was cheaper per litre than the 4 pack of 1 litre cartons and the 2l carton. But then it changed to being the most expensive option. A lady standing next to us was obviously listening in and changed the carton she'd put in her trolley. 😀

I also vary what fruit and veg I buy depending on the price (which fluctuates hugely where I live). I'll buy peppers at 6.95 euros a kg but not at 8.95 euros for example.

We grew up poor (DH)/modest (me) but are now in the top 5% of earners. I don't see what that changes - I still don't want to pay more per kg/litre than I have to (especially when its the same product in different size packaging)
