To think I can't wear the clothes I want because of a fat stomach?

I've always put weight on around my middle. I'm a size 10/12 and quite slim everywhere else but my stomach just looks huge.

When I wear jeans and a top I can't tuck it in because it makes me look pregnant.

I've ended up just wearing baggy jumpers and tops all the time, which I feel rubbish in.

Does anyone have any advice on what to wear?

I wear mostly dresses that skim my tummy --and they usually have cats on)

I feel, and think I look fabulous, but even if I don't I'm very happy with what I wear

Do you have a picture, I'm sure it's not as bad as you think.

Plus we often look bigger when we look down on our stomach, but it's not so bad from the side

Watching with interest as I’m the same with a big tummy - not helped by a bowel condition and various meds! Size 16 on legs and my boobs, but need an 18 to accommodate my tummy which bloats of its own accord for days on end!

Ive just bought short dungarees and a couple of t shirts from new look for summer, as well as a few new play suits. I find play suits and jump suits really flattering and I get loose fitted ones so I look in proportion. Also going to get a few khaki button up dresses with a tie waist to see if that looks good - I think it will looking at the curve versions on various sites.

I find that dresses with a low waist look better, and I’ve recently bought a dresses that was Tall, where the waist sat lower on me. I also find that Pilates helps.

My advice (as a size 18 who also carries my weight in the middle) would be to just say “fuck it” and wear the colours and fabrics that you love. There is not one item of clothing I could wear that would make me happier with my body so I may as well wear clothes I love instead of hiding away in shapeless sacks. I applied this approach to my holiday clothes and am feeling excited to wear them.

I also purchased some shorts to prevent thigh chaffing from M&S and they actually smooth down the tummy a bit too and give a nicer silhouette under trousers. Perhaps look into those.

Have you ever got to the root of what is causing it?

I was like you, slim everywhere else but had a big stomach which made me very self conscious as it made me look pregnant when I wasn't.

First of all I went to the GP for tests to rule out cancer of the uterus, a known cause of bloating.

When I had the all clear I went on an elimination diet, taking out gluten, etc one by one to see if that made a difference.

I found alcohol and eating a lot of sunflower and pumpkin seeds and too much stodge or carbs of any type made me bloat so I restricted them.

I then took up running and pilates, swimming and concentrated on removing inflammation from my diet so took out as much as possible, any thing processed and or with added sugar.

I finally got rid of my large tummy by going on a 3 day fast ( keeping up my fluids with coffee, marmite stock, green tea infused with slices of ginger).

Now I regularly practice intermittent fasting and the big tummy has finally gone

My diet is now predominantly a small bowl daily of leafy green veg, nuts and seeds, all kinds of fresh fruit and veg, tinned fish, and sourdough bread, butter, different types of Japanese food and Asian food such as homemade Dal soup, different cheeses and lots of eggs.

Not only am I fitter and leaner, I also have tons of energy and my protruding tummy a thing of the past :)

I don't have much cleavage because of how slim I am and so I can't wear lots of cute dresses and tops that have low cut. We all have this issue as long as we don't have the perfect figure.

I wear long t-shirts but it’s vital to avoid the tent look, so do the hair tie hack (Google it!) to one side and then artfully arrange the folds, which gives you a waste but also allows coverage at the same.

This is probably the most depressing post I’ve ever read

JustDanceAddict · 30/04/2023 12:37

I have this too - my belly is out of proportion after 2 c/s plus add in peri and a perfect combo!
trousers and tops are best - not too baggy but not tight either. I am usually a 10 on top but can’t always get into 12 trousers or dresses. I’ve lost weight recently due to a medical issue but the belly fat has stuck so I look even more out of proportion!!

jeffgoldblum · 30/04/2023 12:59

I know this isn't for everyone but the only thing that worked for me was the slendertone belt ! , my stomach finally feels like a part of me instead of a floating bag of fat! 🤣

DanceBeneathADiamondSky · 30/04/2023 13:04

You can't be that big in the belly if you can fit into size 10 jeans! Unless you're very short maybe.

I think everyone has their problem areas they hate seeing in pictures, but that's life.

Anyone who honestly thinks they look good in anything at all is completely deluded. Even Hollywood actors have stylists come up with the most flattering gowns for them.

In short, this isn't a you problem. Nobody can wear 'the clothes they want'. Because most people have to choose what suits them

I'm in size 12 jeans at the moment, and no joke, I look a good 5-6 months pregnant. Even when I got down to size 10 it was still there. I am short though. It's the most frustrating thing as no amount of diet or exercise seems to help it so I am stuck with trying to hide it.
