Nurseries charging for bank holidays

Doriana1 · 28/04/2023 21:45

I know I'm BU as they still need to pay their staff, but it stings so much when you're struggling and having to fork out £195 for nursery fees on days they're closed, but still work bank holidays so have to pay for bank holiday clubs too. How did our childcare provisions become so underfunded and expensive?

Ours doesn't charge for bank holidays

SophiaElizabethGrace · 28/04/2023 21:46

It's a lot of money, especially when you're paying for clubs as well however I presume it's in your contract with them.

Every single one in my area does. It is the norm here.

It wasn't but they changed it 6 months after opening. They probably realised they were the only ones not charging for them.

I'm so glad I don't have young DC anymore. I realise they have staff to pay but It seems scandalous having to pay for days when DC aren't there.

Beneficialchampion2 · 28/04/2023 21:53

Did you consider this when you chose to have children? If so YABU.

No I didn't think to Google whether nurseries would charge on bank holidays. I also didn't predict that I'd be made redundant during covid, or that there would be a cost of living crisis at the same time...

They still have to make money if they didnt charge the daily rate would increase. I never get people complaining about things like this its a business at the end of the day which would close if it made a loss then were would you be!. If the owner is are driving ferrari then maybe they are over charging but my DS nursery isnt like that at all and the owners do not have amazing houses and wonderful holidays 5 time a year Quite the opposite they work 5 days a week 8-6. If you have a choice dont send them on a Monday.

Lockdownmummy · 28/04/2023 21:59

I figure that if they didn't charge for BH the daily rate would just be higher 🤷‍♀️ There is an amount of money they need to stay afloat however it's then divided up

Childcare is chronically under funded and under prioritised by the government, bank holiday charges or not.

ACynicalDad · 28/04/2023 22:01

if you do 5 days it makes no difference, but if you are say Mon -Fri it can be disproportionate. I’d rather they charged another £ or 2 a day and didn’t charge on days they weren’t taking kids.

Bobbybobbins · 28/04/2023 22:06

This month is especially tough for this!

mrsm43s · 28/04/2023 22:09

I must admit, I think it would be fairer if the daily rate was increased to cover these costs, so that the cost of the nursery paying their staff/other costs for bank holidays was shared by all nursery users, rather than mostly paid for by those who use nursery on a Monday.

I guess though that the headline price per day would look uncompetitive compared to nurseries which didn't include BH costs in their day rate.

Laserbird16 · 28/04/2023 22:14

I do think they should increase the daily cost. All the parents benefit from the nursery so should share the load. It would also make booking Mondays more attractive as most parents try to avoid the days that are common for public holidays.

tumbledryaah · 28/04/2023 22:18

This is why if you only need 2, 3 or 4 days a week never to choose Mondays as a working day wherever possible! I hope we’ll be able to make it work through a combination of DH (shift worker which works out usually at two Mondays off a month, sometimes 3) my annual leave for the odd days as I can book it fairly short notice and also the help of my mum.

Here comes the...'You shouldn't have children if you can't afford them brigade'.
I wondered how long that would take.

reluctantbrit · 28/04/2023 22:27

I get paid for BH and DH as well so paying the nursery was a no-brainer for us. The same with childminders when DD started school.

Cm078 · 28/04/2023 22:58

My nursery don't charge bank holidays.
Also get 50% off if we book a holiday and give at least 4 weeks notice.
Feel very lucky now.

It is tough with childcare costs. I used to hate it when I had to be off work because DS was ill but still had to pay them. But on the other hand I do understand

Yes they will charge you and everyone else but you will pay more per day so over the year it probably works out the same.
