Ban all on line gambling

Don't bother with new weak rules just ban it.
even with VPN's so your computer looks elsewhere you can still do it!

it's causes to much pain and has no real controls.

So punish everyone because a few people lack self control?

Dotjones · 27/04/2023 10:27

Don't be stupid. If you want to ban things that cause harm, start by banning work.

Sirzy · 27/04/2023 10:29

All that would do is push things like that onto the dark web and make things more dangerous.

there need to be proper controls and regulations in place but outright bans are rarely the way forward.

nancy75 · 27/04/2023 10:38

I'm not usually on the side of banning stuff, but with online gaming I actually agree.

Agree with this one. People need to take responsibility for their own actions.

flipent · 27/04/2023 10:43

I enjoy a flutter occasionally. I certainly do not have a gambling problem.
I agree that gambling can be incredibly damaging, but so can alcohol. Should we be banning that completely too? How about junk food?

I know there has to be a line drawn somewhere, but banning is draconian and impacts those who do enjoy it without it being damaging to them.

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/04/2023 10:57

As with anything we have to expect some level of self responsibility. But I do think that heavier regulation needs to be in place around gambling advertising and UX (user experience) of interactive online gambling. For example, Foxy Bingo / Pink Casino and their ilk which advertise to particular demographics, promoting their platforms as places to make friends, have fun, play executing little games to win cash, chat to other people online and thus targeting lonely, socially isolated people - often retired and unemployed people stuck at home, with few friends - with the promise of company and connections and quick cash. It’s disingenuous and the consumers who end up in difficulty are often particularly vulnerable.

I could get behind this.

WheelsUp · 27/04/2023 11:01

I'd imagine that online takeaway delivery does more harm than online gambling where the majority will just buy a lottery ticket or something.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/04/2023 11:03

They should definitely ban online slot games. They're predatory, proven to be addictive and so damaging.

Lots of things are addictive and potentially dangerous - should we ban those too?

Blughbablugh · 27/04/2023 11:12

Some people on this thread really do not understand addiction. I work in this field and see on a daily basis the devastation and destruction that gambling addiction can cause. Maybe do dome research rather than dismissing it as a lack of self-control.
I do believe that tighter measures need to be put in place, especially to prevent this from spreading to younger people and children.

Many of them are already banned.

Online slots should definitely be banned

Believe me, addiction is in my family and I understand the devastating effects it has - I still don't agree with bans 🤷‍♀️

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 27/04/2023 11:19

@TooBigForMyBoots yes, and many aren't.

I don't agree with governments banning everything that's potentially addictive or dangerous - I think it's a dodgy road to start down.

Speedweed · 27/04/2023 11:20

I do agree certain aspects should be banned, particularly from phones, as it's too easy. I've worked for a couple of gambling businesses, and the way that SM's addictive qualities have been fused with forms of traditional gambling to make them more exciting and addictive for phones is terrifying - so the biggest growth of new gambling addicts is coming from things like online bingo and day trading.

I agree. I also don't think people are aware of the very aggressive marketing techniques targeted to problem gamblers to get them back if they quit.

nancy75 · 27/04/2023 11:21

I can't think of anything legal that people are addicted to that can cause such a huge problem so quickly.

On the online slot machines you can spend your entire month's wages in minutes, you don't even need to be concentrating to do it.

The thing is, if you go down the road of telling people what they can and can't spend their wages on, how far are you going to extend that control?

Are they allowed to buy alcohol?
Junk food?
Food that's designed to be addictive?
Lottery tickets?
Scratch cards?

Where does it end?

The government already tells me that I can’t buy cocaine, a surrogate baby, a new kidney, or a pet tiger. The government already restricts how some things can be marketed and who they can be sold to. This is in recognition of harm and exploitation. Some harmful things being legal clearly isn’t an argument for keeping or making other harmful things legal.

What is it then if not a lack of self control.

I know someone that gambled a small amount when he was younger. He lost and he's never gambled since. Not even a lotto ticket.

He's sensible enough to know that at the end of the day there's only one winner and that's the bookie.

There are plenty of things you can't spend your wages on due to laws and regulations. Guns, drugs, prostitutes.

Online gambling is very harmful to some people and is only increasing this country's debt problem. It also ruins people's lives and especially affects some young people who are vulnerable.

I think banning it would be worth considering tbh.

Stonetolose · 27/04/2023 11:59

And what about those appalling offers to entice punters in? Eg, receive £10 free bets on your first bet with us. It's as bad as the tobacco industry offering "free cigarettes" to try out.

I'm not saying gambling should be banned as clearly a lot of people like it and don't come to any great harm, but advertising should certainly be heavily curtailed - and free bet inducements should be made illegal.
