To think you can’t get a family holiday for £500

inspired by a thread of a woman who’s taking her kids to florida, one of the poster said It was obscene spending that amount of money and that some families spend £500, maybe £1000 max on a family holiday for a family of 4.

I read it got me wondering, can you really get a family holiday (not tent camping) for £500? If so where? That would really help us out as was maybe thinking we might not be able to get a hols this year, what hols can you get (summer time ish) for under that £1k mark? Is it even possible?

I don’t think in England. Maybe a long weekend, but not a week.

That’s what I thought too, that poster on the other thread was insistent! There I was getting all hopeful, status caravan places seem way above that too!

Have a look on hoseasons, they often do cheap deposits and you can pay it off within the year. I’ve found places on there for 7 nights that are a grand and under depending on where you want to go.

Throwawaynames · 26/04/2023 20:21

I would LOVE to know where you can get a holiday for that much. My Spain holiday for two adults and two toddlers was £2.5k for 10 days Grin

WoodenFloorboards · 26/04/2023 20:21

You could get a 2 bedroom holiday cottage somewhere decent for under 1,000 if you book far enough in advance and aren't too fussy.

Oysterbabe · 26/04/2023 20:22

You'll be able to find a caravan for less than a grand I'd have thought.

CeeJay81 · 26/04/2023 20:23

Not in the school summer holidays but you can in term time. We are off to Haven mon to fri, last week of June for £400.

Doggymummar · 26/04/2023 20:23

Do the Sun still do thes $6 holidays

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 26/04/2023 20:24

Quick search on Love holidays says you could get 7 nights in Portugal for 2 adults and 2 kids for £188 per person during the May half term, so you could do it within £500-1000.

Cheaper if willing to go within term time.

KTSl1964 · 26/04/2023 20:24

Look at Direct holiday homes - private rentals.
I got one for £500 last year.
Good luck.

In a non-tourist place.

In February.

All in the Uk?

Of course you can. We do several each year in North England and Scotland. We book cottages directly with owners directly, letting agencies, Airbnb, Hoseasons etc. Very occasionally we do caravans but it's nearly always a fully equipped cottage.

GrouchyKiwi · 26/04/2023 20:24

Caravan up in Scotland maybe?

We're going for a week for around £400 for 5 of us, but that's with a 30% discount, and obviously doesn't include the cost of getting there.

BluebellBlueballs · 26/04/2023 20:24

Cheap caravan holiday for 3 nights at a haven esque place?

RatSlave · 26/04/2023 20:25

£345 for 4 people for a week in July at Somerset Haven.

Lancrelady80 · 26/04/2023 20:25

The real kicker is wanting it in summer time, assuming you mean summer holidays. If you're happy to go mid September, you should be able to find self-catering holiday cottages in the UK.

I'm a teacher so tied to school hols (can't take the children out for a week and accept a fine - some people do this as the cheaper holiday can mean it's worth it financially, although academically is a whole different thing.) We have NEVER had summer time holidays as a family, just can't afford it. We go for Easter or Oct half term instead. (Not June half term as prices begin to rise a lot from that point on.)

RandomGeocache · 26/04/2023 20:25

Most people who bang on about how cheaply they go on holiday are (shudder) campers who enjoy the deprivation of not having a shower or toilet facilities and "roughing it".

Most sane people would say that sounds like a prison camp rather than a holiday.

You must be a master googler, the hotel any good? I’m going look up now

Bull. We always travel in school holidays (by that I mean May, July, August, October) and go to popular holiday locations. It's totally feasible.

Flowersun6 · 26/04/2023 20:27

Haven holidays was coming up at around £400/£500 for August.

Perhaps try end of June.

TeaKitten · 26/04/2023 20:27

Haven Wild duck for 4 nights in August is £527 and there will be cheaper haven sites.

imnotthatkindofmum · 26/04/2023 20:27

I could but only because I already own a caravan. And it would be a reasonably basic site. And if that includes all activities too we'd just be walking to free places all week.
