To think you can’t get a family holiday for £500

inspired by a thread of a woman who’s taking her kids to florida, one of the poster said It was obscene spending that amount of money and that some families spend £500, maybe £1000 max on a family holiday for a family of 4.

I read it got me wondering, can you really get a family holiday (not tent camping) for £500? If so where? That would really help us out as was maybe thinking we might not be able to get a hols this year, what hols can you get (summer time ish) for under that £1k mark? Is it even possible?

So freezing then.

No, we've been lucky and caught heat waves a few times. We typically have two overseas holidays and a few breaks in the UK so we don't plan to sunbathe in Scotland but will be able to hike in shorts. During covid we had many cheap but excellent quality holidays in the north where believe it or not it is often sunny. Why the bitterness?

"Not holiday related at all but your username made me giggle"

Why, thank you, how delightful of you. Utterly charmed, I'm sure. 🙂

I just booked a lodge that sleeps 5 in Pembrokeshire for £670 for a week in the summer holidays. On what looks like a really nice site (small and green) within walking distance of a beach.

Haven and Landal do some lovely caravans, we got one in October half term last year for under £400, Mon til Fri (last minute booking though)

We're going to Italy for just under 1k - I'm going to ignore the week we are staying with relatives but the other bits (easyjet flights and a week in a bungalow at the seaside come up to about £900).

I think you could do a low cost flight + holiday apartment in a lot of Europe for a week if you looked around enough.

We went to Mallorca this Easter, family of three, in an apartment with pool, 5 mins walk from the beach for £629, self catered at the local Lidl, but we would have needed to eat at home anyway. You can holiday cheaply if you shop around.

Forgot to say this was for 9 nights.

Good point Rachel. I use Cottages.com a lot for sheer convenience and always use the MN discount.

There are virtually no cottages available on the big websites for the summer holidays below the 500 quid mark, but there's a fair amount of choice in the 500-600 range and a 7% discount would save you enough money for half a tank of petrol or a family day out at a castle.

I booked a hoseasons caravan for October half term in north wales for £150 mon-fri!

We've got a week in a eurocamp in a big caravan for 548 at the end of June?

Lalalawhitenoise · 29/04/2023 00:08

Anyone who’s got a cracker of a deal, would you post it?

might be super helpful for anyone reading(myself included)

my super handy hint would be, anyone who’s into Disney or got kids into Disney, check magic breaks November/ December time, they have had (2 years on the trot) 3 night 4 park days in the Disney hotels for around £700 (2 adults, 1 child). Not for everyone but a nice deal and it was thurs- sun too, so if it lands in term time only 2 days off x

You sound unsure. I suggest checking your reservation.

In a non-tourist place.

In February.

Or Devon, in July 🙄

17 July though ie a week before English schools break up. And those are 1 bedroom places miles away from the sea.

Cheapest is £745 and everything past the first page is over £1000 https://www.cottages.com/search?adult=2&child=1&infant=1&pets=0&range=0&nights=7&accommodationType=cottages&regionName=Devon&regionId=21997&start=24-07-2023&page=1&sort=priceasc&bedrooms=twobed

I use Sykes cottages a lot. There are 33 holidays for 4 in cottages in August (I searched 3rd week) for UNDER £500. I order a food delivery - currently I’m spending about £80/90 a week. I up this to £150 to allow for alcohol, some ready meals and each family member to pick something they fancy. As pp have said, some days out are free, others modest cost others ££ (if you’ve never been to Diggerland, you’ve never lived). We do a combination so the whole week for 3 would come in at well under 1k including everything.

with covid and a child who is a bit hyper, we’ve not been abroad for a while. I’ve honed my Uk cottage strategy but it still feels like work. I’m knackered and we are off all inclusive in Greece this year. To get decent flight times at a local airport, I’ve paid £900 per person including flights, all luggage and transfers. I’ve still got to pay for airport parking and some spending money. I think there’s also a local tax? For some reason the third week in august was £200 per person cheaper than the week before or the week after but it’s not a bargain. Maybe if you live near Heathrow or Gatwick, have family to pick up/drop off, are all happy to share 1 room for a week and go for late/early flight times, you can pick up bargains in school hols but I don’t see how it can work out cheaper than the cheapest Uk holiday.
