Do you do an online shop if you haven't got transport?

Used to go shopping twice a week. (5 minutes walk away) Then lockdown happened and I switched to online. My mum takes me each week now.

Sandinmyknickers · 26/04/2023 19:20

Only recently started doing online and have never had a car (live in London). You get a backpack and strong reusable bags, pack smart (tins at the bottom of the backpack etc) and get the bus like everybody else. Unless you have physical disabilities, surely this is just something that is general life?

notangelinajolie · 26/04/2023 19:21

Not having a car makes no difference to me because I don’t drive and have always walked to the shops. I reckon I’ve saved a fortune over the years. I used to do online shopping when the kids were little but now that there’s only me and DH I find it’s easier to do 2 or 3 little shops and buy what I need.

usernother · 26/04/2023 19:21

When the children were small and I was carless, we got the bus to the supermarket and a taxi back. No other way to do it.

FlounderingFruitcake · 26/04/2023 19:22

Online! I do actually have a car but living in London I have to go quite a way to get a supermarket with a carpark so online is loads easier.

longtompot · 26/04/2023 19:22

I have only recently go into online shopping. The last time I tried it was years ago and it just seemed like a huge faff. Either it's improved or I have more patience, but I find it so much better, though I do need a list, and find I have to amend my shopping several times. Any bit's they miss (I don't get subs due to dairy allergy) I pop to the shop. Or even find I didn't really need it.

DiscoBeat · 26/04/2023 19:23

If I didn't have a car I would have to do an online shop. I can't see how otherwise, unless you make multiple trips!

wolfmom · 26/04/2023 19:24

Online, bus and shopping trolley or walk (lidl 5 minutes away) occasionally bus and taxi back. Mostly we do one big shop online each month for heavier bits and just get fresh as and when but we live within walking distance of several shops and a short bus journey to several shopping centres

Username24680 · 26/04/2023 19:24

I don’t drive and I have a young toddler. Live in a relatively small town but at the opposite side of it from just shop (about 30 minute walk).

I get an online shop delivered once a fortnight with all the cupboard stuff/bulky items etc and then I go to the supermarket once a week with DS and get a basket of fresh food. I find the supermarket difficult because we live too far away for DS to manage the walk there and back so I need to take the pram then I need to try and navigate the shop with a pram and a basket rather than just popping him in a trolley 😅
There is a small local bus that runs in our town but it only runs once an hour and only every second one goes to our part of town.

Fandabedodgy · 26/04/2023 19:26

I have a car. But I do my shopping online.

TrueScrumptious · 26/04/2023 19:27

I don’t have a car. I walk (five minutes) and use a wheely shopper. Or I can go a couple of stops on the bus to another supermarket. I’ve never done online shopping.

mamabear715 · 26/04/2023 19:28

No car, no supermarkets nearby, mobility not great, bus once an hour (in a city..) I shop online. Have done since I lost DH in 2007.

CeeJay81 · 26/04/2023 19:28

No car here.

Fortnightly tesco shop and I work in a large coop(7 mins walk away). Milk, bread, fruit, veg and more works out cheaper there due to a really good staff discount. So guess its easier for me than most.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/04/2023 19:28

Get it delivered weekly. I have a car again now, but still prefer a delivery rather than going to Sainsbos myself

Topseyt123 · 26/04/2023 19:30

I'd do an online shop. It's what I did when I couldn't drive for a few weeks due to a broken limb.

I also do like to walk down to the local shops with my wheeled trolley.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 26/04/2023 19:33

We have a car but I don't drive anymore. We have a fortnightly online delivery for mostly store cupboard and freezer stuff, weekly veg box delivery and then I walk down to our high street with my wheely bag on a Saturday morning for anything else we might need. If it's a heavy week I treat myself to a bus ride up the hill, otherwise I walk back through the park.

camelfinger · 26/04/2023 19:39

Have done a weekly online shop for years. If we get a hire car and go real life shopping it takes AGES so I’m happy with the time online shopping frees up.

Lcb123 · 26/04/2023 19:41

Either delivery, walk with a rucksack, or bike with pannier bags! Usually go more than once a week - that is allowed…

booksandbrooks · 26/04/2023 20:33

I've never had a car, but do live in a city.
Since my youngest we've done more online shops but mostly take a backpack and shopper bags and walk. Sometimes cycle and load up my bike with bits too.

TheChosenTwo · 26/04/2023 20:37

Before I drove and before home delivery I used to walk and get a taxi back (also had 2 young girls who needed hands holding!).
Actually it may not have been before home delivery but it was a good way of spending a couple of hours out and about when the kids were little! They sat in the trolley together holding hands singing… ahh the nostalgic memories!
Now I do drive but get an online shop due to time and convenience. Dh gets the meat from the butchers at the weekend and everything else comes online.

EustaceTheMonk · 26/04/2023 20:47

Back in the 60s my parents didn't have a car. Mum would walk up to the local grocers, leave a list and they would deliver. Only things we bought and carried home was meat and fruit.

WhatIsGinLiqueurAnyway · 26/04/2023 20:47

I have a shopping trolley which attaches to a special widget on the back of my bike. It's massive - I can fit a full weekly shop for 4 in there (except milk - I get that delivered). BUT it's flat all the way from my house to Lidl. I wouldn't want to go up a hill when it's full.

MrsToothyBitch · 26/04/2023 22:45

I have a car but do a weekly online shop and buy the odd ad hoc item on my way home- there are 2 mini supermarkets by my station. I've always done this- it's maybe one trip a week?

When I first left home I used to drive to my nearest ASDA as it was cheapest and gave my car a little run. I used to go on Saturday night because it was usually the quietest! Then I had no car for a bit so used to walk to the nearby largest supermarket & walk back. Drove if I reckoned on a big enough shop. Switched to online shopping after I got a leg injury & I love getting a delivery now.

MrsToothyBitch · 26/04/2023 22:47

*Eventually got my car back and drove if it was a big enough shop.

VestaTilley · 26/04/2023 22:50

We did for years - both would go and both would take about 3 bags each. Only the two of us then.

Now we do have a car, but rarely do a big supermarket shop. I do a few small top up shops during the week, as does DH, and that’s usually enough to pick up dinner, lunch and breakfast things for us and DS.
