To wonder why some people don't seem to care about being ripped off?

Bought something on a selling site. Found out it was not as described so got a refund. I warned a couple of other buyers who said they were not bothered. One of the buyers who was ripped off also got a refund and went on to warn around 50 other customers, 95% of who refused to take action or even change their review. Some did change their reviews but did not want a refund.

The process of refund takes less than a minute. The seller continues to keep growing despite some bad reviews.

I thought people would care more.

Depends what you mean by "not as described", really.

Does it affect the use of the product? Is it something that would impact everyone?

TBH if I've only spent a few quid on something crap, I probably wouldn't complain or write a review, I'd just chuck the item in the bin and not buy from that person again.

Fairyliz · 25/04/2023 16:18

Sorry I don’t understand why would they write a decent review if it was a faulty product?

aberlot · 25/04/2023 16:19

Maybe they were happy with the price and product.

RoxanaRoxana · 25/04/2023 16:20

It sounds like it wasn’t as described, but still works/ looks nice / whatever. Is that right?

In that case, if I was happy with it I wouldn’t be complaining either.

It depends what you mean by "not as described" - that could be anything from an expensive item that's not fit for purpose to a cheap item that's just slightly different colour from the photo.

Given the reaction, I suspect the latter. Why do you expect people to give a shit about your personal vendetta if they're ok with it?

Not as described meaning falsely described.

I am not expecting them to care about my vendetta. It is something that affects them. Some have taken action because they are unhappy with being ripped off.

It wasn't faulty but they paid upto 10 times over the price because they were not aware that it had been falsely described. Once some found out, they did change their review.

Hard to say with so little detail

IncompleteSenten · 25/04/2023 17:01

Maybe some people felt that the item they received was worth the price they'd paid.

Like paying fifty quid for a designer knock off. Some people will be ok with that. Some will be pissed off they didn't get a designer item for a knock off price iyswim.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 25/04/2023 17:01

Not as described meaning falsely described.

Yes, but in what way?

A different colour?
The wrong fit?
Does the change make the item totally useless, or does it still work?

Just because something's not as described, doesn't mean it's broken.

NeedANewPhone1 · 25/04/2023 17:02

Many people don't know (or care) about their consumer rights, especially when buying online.

Many, many sellers don't seem to be aware (or don't care about) their legal obligations - loads of small businesses say 'no returns' or try to dictate the terms of a return, for example.

It's not a great combination, and means that rogue sellers get away with it again and again.

aberlot · 25/04/2023 17:03

Unless you spit it out and tell us wtf you are on about nobody can answer properly. This cryptic shit is so frustrating.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 25/04/2023 17:04

If i've not done my research/shopped around and overpay, thats on me.
Seller deliberately lying saying you're getting item A, but really its very similar item B with lower specs/value, i'd want to return and not take the hit.

swimlyn · 25/04/2023 17:27

We are surrounded by well off people who typically have fat pensions and don’t give a stuff about rip offs. That of course encourages more rip offs.

This applies to small purchases and big purchases.

Thanks guys!

Puffthemagiclizard · 25/04/2023 17:45

Without context this makes no sense really so you won't get answers.

tiller5 · 25/04/2023 18:22

The seller claims to have made it but they bought it elsewhere.

That really wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts Even if you had paid 10 times the price?

OP posts:
coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 25/04/2023 18:38

@tiller5 I'd be annoyed that I paid 10x the cost, but that would be my fault for not doing my research 🤷‍♀️

I don't really care whether something is handmade or not though 🙈

5128gap · 25/04/2023 18:47

I'd mind if the seller claimed to have made it themselves and had purchased it from somewhere ethically dubious. I might mind if I thought hand made meant unique and it was collectible in some way. Otherwise, provided I got the item I was expecting and paid a price I was clearly happy to pay, I don't think I'd care either.
Though of course, 10 × £1 is very different from 10 × £1000, so if we're talking the latter, I'd be a bit cross with myself for not having shopped around, and would indeed try for a refund.

Riapia · 25/04/2023 18:51

When did you find out that you had paid 10times what the item was worth?

PollyAmour · 25/04/2023 18:55

Was it an Etsy shop selling handmade sterling silver bracelets that she actually bought from Ali Baba Express?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/04/2023 18:56

Was this on Etsy? That's become a real hotbed of reselling of tat these days. It used to be genuine hand made stuff and now it's people buying in from China and dropshipping.

NightOwlNotEarlyBird · 25/04/2023 18:56

Is this on etsy? There's a lot of faux "handmade" on there.

3dogsandarabbit · 25/04/2023 18:58

How do you know she didn't make it, or did it have "made in China" on it.
