To think it's not normal to go from a size 16 to an 8?

Within 3 months?

3 months ago I was healthy and okay overweight, but otherwise fine.

I had keyhole surgery and from then on, I've been unable to eat much, regularly suffering with nausea

My body is craving healthy, vitamin filled foods which is great, but I have next to no appetite at all, nauseous a lot of the time and now I'm a size 8 after going into surgery as a size 16.

I've been to the GP who prescribed Cyclezine. It does help - I can eat something at least on it. But I'm still nauseous and not got an appetite

I also have pelvic pain almost constantly. GP has referred to Gynae after me insisting but the waiting time is long, my appointment isn't until December

AIBU to think this much weight loss isn't normal or healthy? I look gaunt.

I am constantly tired and feel weak toon

It doesn't sound good if it hasn't been done through exercise and positive lifestyle change.

Would you manage something like Complan?

sammyfaye · 24/04/2023 19:43

@Singleandproud I've tried, and I end up sounding like the competitive under eaters Grin it's a few sips and I'm very much like 'oh this is just too much'

I feel like I literally can't swallow anymore otherwise I'll be sick.

What was your surgery for?

sammyfaye · 24/04/2023 19:47

@lljkk I had my appendix taken out (it was actually fine when they removed it)

See GP. Were you weighed at hospital before your op. Confirm your weight loss over a set time.
Large weight loss is not good.

Xarrie · 24/04/2023 19:48

Go back to your GP, somethings not right.

GretaGood · 24/04/2023 19:48

A friend has lost a lot of weight and it is an overactive thyroid.

sammyfaye · 24/04/2023 19:48

@mumda yep, I weigh 149 pounds.

My weight before going under GA was 188

It might be completely unrelated to the surgery but definitely needs urgent review. Keep pushing the Dr.

Trixiedrum · 24/04/2023 19:50

If the appendix was ok then what caused the pain in the first place?

This isn’t right, have you had bloods for coeliac disease, IBD etc?

Socialdistancechampion · 24/04/2023 19:50

Especially as you went in with presumably appendicitis symptoms yet had a healthy appendix removed. Something is amiss with your bowel

sammyfaye · 24/04/2023 19:51

@Trixiedrum the explanation I was given is that sometimes the appendicitis can be microscopic, meaning it needs to be looked at by cell specialists or something to see the problem

But the pelvic pain is still there

Cocochai · 24/04/2023 19:51

Go back to the GP and insist on further investigation- ask to see someone different if you feel the first GP will be dismissive. Such a weight loss without any effort is a red flag for something not being right and it’s quite poor of the GP to ignore this.

YukoandHiro · 24/04/2023 19:52

If you have pelvic pain too I would insist this is escalated. Have they checked your ovaries?

stayathomer · 24/04/2023 19:52

Definitely definitely go back, sounds awful op

They told me when they did the scan that they had a quick check of my ovaries, and would call gynae surgeon in if they found anything at the time

But they didn't find anything, so whipped my appendix out

Please go back and push for more tests.. it needs investigating until there's a proper answer.

It's horrible. I've gone from a happy young person, full of energy and feeling well

To being a shell of my former self, in a weird 'mild/moderate' pain daily with not much strength and clothes that hang off me now

I had my gallbladder out when I was 19. That was key hole too. Felt amazing after it was finally gone

I've felt truly horrific ever since waking up from theatre with this

Unexplained weight loss is a red flag symptom. Ask your gp to refer you on the 2 week possible cancer pathway

I mentioned this today. Different GP. He asked me if I suffer with anxiety Sad

I said no, but losing weight is worrying when I'm not trying. He said but I am trying sort of as I've said I'm not eating and obviously diet changes lead to weight loss

OP posts:
Silverrocks · 24/04/2023 20:00

I swear you can go to the GP with any symptoms and as a woman they'll always ask if it's bloody anxiety!

It does sound like something is definitely amiss, sadly you will have to keep pushing I expect for them to look into it, but you should.

knittingaddict · 24/04/2023 20:00

He's not wrong.

It's the lack of appetite and pain that needs investigating.

FlyingCherries · 24/04/2023 20:03

Have you had any blood tests?

sammyfaye · 24/04/2023 20:06

Have you had any blood tests?

I had some in hospital. All normal. Don't know all the specifics but things like infection marker, blood count etc all taken
