To think it's not normal to go from a size 16 to an 8?

Within 3 months?

3 months ago I was healthy and okay overweight, but otherwise fine.

I had keyhole surgery and from then on, I've been unable to eat much, regularly suffering with nausea

My body is craving healthy, vitamin filled foods which is great, but I have next to no appetite at all, nauseous a lot of the time and now I'm a size 8 after going into surgery as a size 16.

I've been to the GP who prescribed Cyclezine. It does help - I can eat something at least on it. But I'm still nauseous and not got an appetite

I also have pelvic pain almost constantly. GP has referred to Gynae after me insisting but the waiting time is long, my appointment isn't until December

AIBU to think this much weight loss isn't normal or healthy? I look gaunt.

I am constantly tired and feel weak toon

Unexplained, unplanned weight loss is a warning. I would be in touch with a GP to start ruling out the possible causes.

philautia · 24/04/2023 21:09

Have you been tested for helicobacter pylori @sammyfaye ?

EffortlessDesmond · 24/04/2023 21:10

I don't think I would go to A&E. But I do think you should see your GP PDQ. Ask for a same day phone consultation?

BCBird · 24/04/2023 21:17

Do not give up. There clearly is a reason this is happening. It needs investigating.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 24/04/2023 21:17

Please see your GP as soon as possible and absolutely insist on having blood tests. And I'd push for a gynae appointment asap. I hope its nothing but please push and advocate on your behalf.

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 24/04/2023 21:19

I'm interested in this thread as I had suspected appendicitis but unlike you mine wasn't removed at the last minute the Ct scan showed an embedded IUD which was assumed to be the source of acute pain. It was whipped out and anti it issued but I'm still in agony, next to no appetite (like you a size 16 to start with as have always loved my food and lots of it too)

I'm in for a utero biopsy tomorrow under general but have also been referred for an abdo laparoscopy and colonoscopy (all the NHS spa treatments 😬) as the pain is becoming more frequent/unbearable plus I'm off my face on codeine most of the time so is soon to impact my professional life.

I hope you get some answers soon. I'll post here with whatever they find inside me in case it is of use to you.

I also only fancy healthy things and small portions. Rice and salmon with some edamame beans and pickled cabbage is the only dinner I can find the appetite for plus a rice cake with peanut butter on for lunch.

I had very similar happen after abdominal surgery. Scar tissue had formed around the intestine causing a complete blockage in my bowel but for months I’d been queasy, only wanting to eat ice and fruit/veg. I lost 3 stone in 3 months, was dangerously underweight and all they did was refer me to an eating disorder clinic. It was only when I started vomiting feces that I got an MRI and immediate surgery.

I hope you get some answers OP

JustCheck · 24/04/2023 21:22

I definitely lost all appetite after my appendix was out. It took a really long time to come back.

Spidey66 · 24/04/2023 21:24

Trixiedrum · 24/04/2023 19:50

If the appendix was ok then what caused the pain in the first place?

This isn’t right, have you had bloods for coeliac disease, IBD etc?

That was my first thought too.

There must have been good reason for them to think your appendix out. If they were wrong, there must be another reason.

That's a lot of weight very quickly, even through eating healthily and exercise. It needs further investigations and asap.

Echobelly · 24/04/2023 21:25

Unexplained weight loss to that degree is something to get investigated, definitely. I hope you can get some answers.

Spidey66 · 24/04/2023 21:31

I've now rtft and other posters have mentioned cancer. That was my initial thought too but didn't want to alarm you. My friend died last year of cancer and that was the initial symptom. However, he was 61 and a smoker so obviously a different scenario toyou..

I hope you get a diagnosis and treatment plan ASAP.

EffortlessDesmond · 24/04/2023 21:32

But definitely DONT say that MN sent you! Unexplained, unplanned significant weight loss over 3 months is why you are asking for a FACE TO FACE consultation.

AgrathaChristie · 24/04/2023 21:33

Could you get a copy of your blood test results ( you’re entitled to all your medical records , you might have access to yours online) post the full blood results inc your result and the range figures in brackets) I have a history of GP telling my results were normal when they were borderline and low enough to cause symptoms.

Mochinated · 24/04/2023 21:39

Second the advice to take a male friend or relative in with you. Shouldn't have to but whatever gets you progressed fastest.

I had a relative whose DH was being treated for cancer. She started being sick and unable to keep food down. They kept saying it was anxiety caused by her DH's condition. Eventually she was hospitalised and they found throat/stomach cancer. She passed away within weeks. Her DH outlived her. All because of the sexism of the HCPs who fobbed her off and didn't investigate.

I really hope you can get attention quickly and it turns out to be something easily treatable OP.

Hellybelly84 · 24/04/2023 21:42

Have you had a pelvic ultrasound specifically looking at that area? Thats usually on of the first things they do with pelvic pain.

Abergale · 24/04/2023 21:43

Even if you were trying to lose weight that’s to much to fast. Something clearly isn’t right

ukgot2pot · 24/04/2023 21:45

GretaGood · 24/04/2023 19:48

A friend has lost a lot of weight and it is an overactive thyroid.

I was going to say this too. Do you have any other symptoms OP?

Lougle · 24/04/2023 21:47

I don't think this is unexplained weight loss in the medical sense. There is an explanation - the OP can't eat. It certainly needs investigating, but 'unexplained weight loss' means weight loss despite your usual nutritional intake. The reason its a cancer red flag is that the normal nutrition is insufficient for maintenance of body weight because a cancer process is taking the energy.

That doesn't mean that it's any less worrying, but it's not 'unexplained'.

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 24/04/2023 21:47

Overactive thyroid, cancer or whatever you need to be taken seriously ASAP, it is not as if you have stopped losing weight, is it?

mumda · 24/04/2023 21:48

@sammyfaye do you have anyone who can go in with you?

Explain why you're concerned. List your symptoms. The weightloss is a major symptom, but everything else needs looking at to work out what the problem is.

Bananasinpjamas4567 · 24/04/2023 20:34

This is horrendously sexist but do you have a male friend or relative you can take to the GP with you? You shouldn’t have to but unfortunately it’s well documented they are listened to more than women.

Totally true. Experienced it myself

I was wondering if abdominal adhesions were a possible cause of your pain too @sammyfaye .

Fluffyrug191 · 24/04/2023 21:53

Agree with PP, this is not unexplained in the medical sense. As your GP said, you are losing weigh because you are not eating as much, this is the explanation. In this sense I would not expect this to be a specific cancer reg flag but definitely worth investigating.

phoneissue · 24/04/2023 21:57

This doesn’t sound right and you are being massively fobbed off. Pls go back until you can get someone to take you seriously.

Pippylongstock · 24/04/2023 22:04

Gosh sounds horrendos and as others have said, get back to the GP and request a different one. So Manu red flags that this needs taking seriously
