To wonder how do people afford everything?

Just that. How does everyone afford everything?

Coffee shops etc packed here. Social media full of people doing expensive things.

DH and I ate high earners so I don’t get it.

There are still lots of people that are doing completely fine despite the ‘cost of living crisis’. I’ve not actually noticed anyone I know having to make any changes. Ski holidays to Canada still booked, house extensions going ahead (I know of 7 currently!), pay rises, private schools etc.
Expensive cocktail bars still packed, Botox and expensive hair appointments. NHS dentists closing and people just paying for private because they can.
It does surprise me to be honest.

Yes but you probably don't know lots of people doing all of the above - just some of the above. If a lot of people go out for one occasional treat, because there are a lot of people in the UK, places could still be busy despite the fact that overall there is a COL crisis.

I have a three gigs lines up to attend this year. That's costing me a fair bit but I can pay for them because I cut back/prioritise my spending in other areas. Those 3 gigs will probably be my only nights out this year - the rest of the time I'm at home in the evening watching TV or scrolling mumsnet.

@moogle87 Out of interest why are you paying back student debt if you don’t earn enough to meet the threshold? It’s only ever a percentage of earnings rather than interest accrued so it doesn’t work like a credit card or loan.

It’s different with an MSc as you get 1 loan (mine was £11,222), but have to pay the tuition fees as you’re studying. So you can take the loan out & that would cover the fees, but it doesn’t give you anything to live off. We needed money to pay our mortgage, so most of mine went on paying that. Otherwise we couldn’t afford to pay our bills from 1 wage.

  1. My parents are quite generous to me.
  2. I guess I married also richer than me.
  3. I earn an ok amount of money (£210k per annum for 4 days a week of work)

This question gets asked so often on Mumsnet and I can't for the life of me fathom why?

Surely it's obvious that different people spend money on different things, and always have?

Exactly.
We all choose what and how we spend what we have, we’ll all do that differently.

There also seems to be a lot of jealousy on MN about other peoples earnings and spending.

I didn't say they were. I am answering the question in the title of the thread.
