You know the ones, here's how to get your baby to sleep 12 hours from birth; bath, bottle, book, bed, white noise, sleep sack , blackout curtains etc.. when the reality is the vast majority do all of these things and the baby still doesn't sleep very well and constantly wakes up so this type of content can be very negative and make mums feel like they're doing something wrong and can be triggering especially for PPD. I think mostly these mumfluencers come across like they think they are the holy grail of parenting when in reality they are just lucky that their baby sleeps . What do you think?

Unfollow them and don’t give them a second thought. The whole influencer culture is unhealthy for anyone’s mental health.

Beetrootlover82 · 21/04/2023 07:32

For some - it must either help or they’re just interested

for you - it doesn’t help and you’re not interested, and neither for me. So… I don’t follow them 🤷‍♀️

Devoutspoken · 21/04/2023 07:33

I've never seen one

RudsyFarmer · 21/04/2023 07:34

I’ve never come across them. Think about where you’re finding this content and either unfollow/block or cease to go on the website. It’s liberating!

Phoebo · 21/04/2023 07:36

Well they're obviously stupid, no newborn should be sleeping for 12 hours straight away anyway! Unfollow.

Mine did. Why wear a sleeping baby if they don't want to be fed?

Mine and now almost 6 and 2. Never harmed them, if just isn't the norm

No way I'd wake a sleeping (healthy and decent weight) baby!

SleepingTilSummer · 21/04/2023 07:41

It’s not their fault if it makes you feel bad, they can post whatever they like. Just don’t watch it and just do what feels right for your baby. You already know it’s not reality for a lot of parents and babies.

My kids never slept 12 hours til they were teenagers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

KittyAlfred · 21/04/2023 07:58

I’ve never understood why people give influencers any time. They’re just normal people who want to brag about the way they do things, and they make most of it up anyway. These women are hardly going to post saying “had a shit night last night, no sleep at all”! Influencers are basically the mouthiest stupidest kids in the school playground, ignore them.

dietcokelime · 21/04/2023 07:59

But there's also mum influencers out there showing the rough and ready stressful side - just choose who you follow, or don't follow anyone at all. If the content isn't for you, don't engage.

so agree. and the beauty ones are all heavily filtered.

Deathbyfluffy · 21/04/2023 08:23

All influencers seem to be stuck up idiots - and I hope the term ‘mumfluencer’ never gains traction as that just illustrates the point.

The problem with the Internet is that it’s given idiots like these influencers screen time who really would be best kept to themselves…!

FloorWipes · 21/04/2023 08:27

Also, they are often trying to shill products to new mothers who are desperate because new motherhood is a very a hard time. The products most probably won’t achieve the goal and your baby will still not sleep the night through despite your expensive white noise maker or smart blackout blinds or whatever…The whole unethical and a fascinating study in late capitalism but maybe above all the whole thing is just incredibly sad. I just feel sad for everyone involved.

FloorWipes · 21/04/2023 08:27

*the whole thing is

LolaSmiles · 21/04/2023 08:33

They're just grifting and probably trying to sell new mums stuff at a time they're already feeling vulnerable and insecure.

Across my friends there's people who sleep trained, had a routine, had to pause their whole life because baby would only nap nicely in certain conditions on days when Jupiter and the moon were aligned (poor friend was at her wits end here), babywore, contact napped, bottle fed, breastfed on demand, breastfed to schedule, let baby nap in the car, let baby nap in a pram, were super strict on a schedule, were very baby led.

You know what, some babies slept more than others, some napped more than others, and we all laughed about it in the end because my friend following my approach wouldn't have made her baby less fussy about napping, and me following her approach wouldn't have forced my babies to sleep through the night sooner. Babies are their own individual people and have their own temperaments.

If I recall a newborn is meant to be fed every three hours as their stomach is so tiny, literally tiny so they can't hold much. I think the first few days its about the size of thimble, then it gets a bit bigger like a golf ball. After a certain age, can't remember now, maybe its 4 weeks or something like then you can lengthen that time. The problem is many people don't properly educate themselves when pregnant and I'm sure the instagrammers don't have any disclaimers so some advice can probably be quite damaging or even dangerous. Sleeping that long can also be a SIDs risk. So much misinformation and disinformation out there. I read up alot and did lots of classes, but have a cousin who did nothing. Some of the things she's doing aren't great, although I'm sure her kids will most likely turn out fine but you never know. Great yours turned out fine, they usually do! 🤷‍♀️

Vivalaive · 21/04/2023 08:41

Yes can’t stand them! Especially the ones whose babies are 0.2 seconds old and they’re already spouting advice on all things motherhood - bf/ sleeping etc. I do however take everything on social media with a pinch of salt these days. I’ve found out a few people have been going through quite hellish personal situations but have still posted about their lives like it was all going amazingly. Block/ Ignore like others have said x

Mysondoesntsleep · 21/04/2023 08:42

Can’t bare them! Especially when they’ve been a mum for a week.

shlips · 21/04/2023 08:45

@Phoebo yep their stomach is tiny. But they'll usually wake up if that hungry

I had a really good let down when my babies came and seemed to have a lot more than just liquid gold, which is probably why they felt fuller

Anyway they never woke up to be fed. But woke on the dot around 7am looking for food, so I fed them.

Routine from day 1

It all depends on luck. Some babies are super chill. Some not so much, some scream and cry because of allergies and reflux, etc etc

Brunilde · 21/04/2023 08:45

People don't seem to get that they are just walking adverts. Treat them the same way you would a TV advert claiming to be better than all the other products. Take with a pinch of salt, or completely ignore. Or go ahead and buy into it if what they are selling interests you.

But don't make the mistake of thinking that what you see is someone's normal life.

ginlovingqueen · 21/04/2023 08:56

They're now called "Digital Creators"

Me either, maybe stop looking at them?

(disclaimer, I have a hatred for 'influencers' and put them in the same scammy lying bucket as MLMs)

Lasouthpaw · 21/04/2023 09:19

I don't follow any of them but Kate Lawler popped up as a suggestion for me. She has a little girl a couple of months younger than my son. She is gorgeous and chatting quite well and Kate attributed her speech to the fact she and her husband have always read to her since about 10 weeks I think.

I've read voraciously to my son since he was born and he still isn't talking properly yet!

It bugged me as it sounded so simple and smug when in reality, progress in speech is down to so many factors!

RudsyFarmer · 21/04/2023 09:21

Wasn’t Kate Lawler having a full on mental breakdown not too long ago? I’d take anything she’s spouting with a punch of salt.

Lovelyring · 21/04/2023 09:25

I think influencers are ridiculous. I did almost NONE of the things you listed and my baby slept generally really well. Just luck imo. Avoid social media.

Exactly, this. I sometimes wonder how on earth people managed to survive before the advent of the net, and influencersHmm
