AIBU feeding my kid instant noodles several times a week

cooknwithbaby · 20/04/2023 21:48

I had dinner with my DS and my mum saw we were eating instant noodles with chicken soup and extra vegetable I added. She shamed me about feeding my DS instant noodles, saying it was unhealthy.

It's easy for me to make and everybody likes eating it. DS has loved noodles since he was 6 months old. I cook it several times a week. But I usually make it a bit healthier with broccoli. Sometimes I add a fried egg.

AIBU by feeding my kid some instant noodles for dinner?

I used to make ds an instant noodle dish with tin tuna and peas he was (still is!) a very fussy eater but ate that”

He would probably have eaten fresh egg noodles too. Same taste, none of the added crap.

Without the flavour sachet, the noodles themselves are not bad

There are studies to prove the dangers of pot noodles in large amounts and a warning on the instructions.

they have been banned in some countries just fyi

Seriously? Why is that?

the smell of a Pot Noodle or cup a soup puts me off - too many offices I've worked in have reeked of them. But I like the odd Super Noodle. Only the beef flavour. They aren't filling so I rarely eat them.

Doyoumind · 20/04/2023 22:58

Anyone saying they are a healthy for anyone is wrong. They are crammed full of chemicals that have no place in a healthy diet for adults, never mind children.

daily pasta, white bread and potatoe are all very poor choices nutritionally, and these instant noodles are a hell of a lot worse even than that

Carbs should be whole grain, and anything over processed, like white bread should be avoided all together, except as an occasional one off.

Orthorexia is a pretty poor choice too.

Cool, next time I eat a slice of wholemeal bread or some brown rice and then end up shitting liquid for hours I'll just tell my bowels that the low fibre foods I can tolerate are very poor choices and they need to do better.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/04/2023 23:01

I would think it would be just as easy to use ordinary dried egg noodles in a broth, and add vegetables as you are doing.

We do that but with pasta instead of noodles when the kids are ill or for a quick lunch.

Whu · 20/04/2023 23:01

Switch to udon noodles (wheat flour) much healthier and with your protein (I use tofu) and vegetables and broth it is delicious and nutritious.

Cony23 · 20/04/2023 23:03

I wouldn't. But from time to time i do ( mostly on the summer when it's a nightmare to stay by the cooker) a salad from a packet of noodles add 2 boiled eggs, tomatos and cucumbers, used to add avocado but everywhere I buy nowadays either have soap taste or are moulded inside. I tried it when my 2nd boy wouldn't eat anything and he loved this. You can add whatever veg you like but would give it once or twice a week maximum.

I think this is probably true of pot noodles, but instant noodles which are made of nothing more than flour and water, and which you just simmer for a few minutes and then use in stir fries or ramen soups are no different to quick cook pasta or orzo.

Lcb123 · 20/04/2023 23:11

Assuming you mean like Supanoodles, that’s very unhealthy and a bit of veg doesn’t offset the amount of salt and additives. Fair enough if you’re adding egg noodles to homemade soup

carriedout · 20/04/2023 23:12

Entirely depends if you mean just 'noodles' which are fine or the flavoured UPF noodles with loads of additives and salt.

Switch to plain noodles and you are fine - plenty of cultures eat those multiple times per week.

People in MN have a weird opinion of food and they'll often try and one up other posters. They'll try to project a perfect parenting aura and they'll make out that they weigh everything and buy gluten free every thing and free range everything blah blah blah.

The rest of us, in the real world, realise that food is food is food. It's all fuel, it all gets chewed up and mulched and sent down to a stomach of acid to dissolve it, digest it, take out what can be used and waste what can't be used.

Noodles, chips, chocolate, pizza, burgers, bananas, gluten free yaks milk from the southern side of a mountain in Chile that can only be milked on a Tuesday at 3.33pm..
It all gets mulched, swallowed, burned.

Modern instant noodles, chicken soup and vegetables... I'd eat that daily, I'm sure there's people in Japan that do and they're far healthier than most of the over dieted westerners.

Don't stress it OP.

horrendous over processed muck, that will interfere with their metabolism and most likely lead to obesity and diabetes. Once or twice a year, in an emergency, maybe

Knew you'd be here 😂😂😂

baffledcoconut · 20/04/2023 23:16

I’m beginning to wonder if there is some confusion as to what instant noodles are. The Japanese instant ones are nothing like the killers described here. Literally a whole nation eats them regularly.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the same horrified posters don't make their own pasta, and it's the same ingredients!

baffledcoconut · 20/04/2023 23:18

I had a Hokkaido hot pot flavour ramen pack last week and it was pure joy.

Yellowdays · 20/04/2023 23:18

Utter rubbish, and ignorant.

LindyHopathon · 20/04/2023 23:20

But aren't noodles exactly the same as pasta?

baffledcoconut · 20/04/2023 23:20

Yes. Identical.

Lachimolala · 20/04/2023 23:21

Mine eat this several times a week too, but I don’t use the ramen packet stuff. The salt is just too high really.

If you go to your local asian supermarket there’s tons of dried noodles to pick from. I use them with my own broth, broth sounds like a big job but you only need to make it once and it makes loads and you can freeze it. Which is what I do, I then put egg, chilli, shredded meat, veggies in it. Whatever I’ve got in the fridge really. Kind of like my own version of pho/ramen.

My thoughts on reading that post then looking at the poster’s name!

Glad I flipped to the end of the thread where the normal people are and I don't feel like a monster anymore.

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 20/04/2023 23:25

Pls share a recipe for the broth - is it miso paste and/or soy thread into cooking tips

Notjustabrunette · 20/04/2023 23:27

they have the nutritional value of a packet of crisps. I suppose if your question was ‘I’m feeding my kids crisps, broccoli and an egg for dinner’ what do you think people would say.
