To let my fucking cat take his chances??

He’s a nice cat and I have no real beef with him generally but he’s learned that he can somehow scale the ivy outside my first floor window and shout at me from 5am.

He doesn’t want anything. He can access the whole downstairs where there are many beds and food in his bowl. If I let him in he doesn’t just want to curl up on my bed, he instead continues shouting and runs downstairs to demand slightly fresher food, whilst waking the younger children.

If I get him in and just hurl him straight out the front door Flintstones style, he just climbs straight back up.

Once he’s up, he’s on a very precarious tiny windowsill. I don’t know how he even does it without falling.

YABU - continue to let the fucker in

YANBU - ignore him, leave him to his own shitty decision-making, and hope he doesn’t fall and just gives up in time

My little monster sleeps on my pillow every night then at 4:30am without fail she saunters into the bathroom, hops into the bath and signs the song of her people until I go in stroked her once (ONCE) then she comes back to bed.

she has been doing it since she was eight weeks old. I have tried everything (passively complaining without taking action is the only option, right?)

sweetdreamstenasee · 20/04/2023 09:05

I’ve got a tricky day of work ahead and this thread has given me a boost, still reeling from Dumbledore style haha. thanks OP I hope you find a solution 😂

But on the indoor v outdoor cats debate, only speaking from my parents experience.

Out cats came to us (not by choice but wouldn’t change a thing now) when we were living without outside space and we couldn’t let them outside due to the nature of our apartment building. We thought they were happy, but now we’ve moved to a house in with a garden it’s so clear how much their lives have improved and they seem so content.

Could he maybe be an indoor cat overnight only?

5foot5 · 20/04/2023 09:06

But ivy is awful stuff.. Honestly I would try and get rid then problem solved.

(Well you will still have to keep going after the ivy from time to time because the bastard stuff is immortal)

CalpolDependant · 20/04/2023 09:08

I’m going to be annihilated for admitting this on here.

One of my cats had a thing about climbing up to my (equally precarious) bedroom window ledge, for no reason. We have a cat flap and a constant dry food hopper. It started suddenly and felt relentless, waking us all night. Also, he couldn’t get down again on his own, only up. So we would have to let him in. We tried a few things, including leaving him there until the morning so that he would “learn”. He didn’t learn and we lay awake all night listening to his tiny mews.

At 8 months pregnant, and knowing we would soon have a baby in our room, we took action.

I stationed myself outside and waited until he attempted The Climb. Then I sprayed him with the hose.

I did this again many many times over 3 or 4 days and eventually it broke his tiny cat resolve. Now he uses the cat flap again.

Had to get my windows cleaned though.

CornedBeef451 · 20/04/2023 09:09

I'm dreading the warmer weather as my cats will be able to get in through the windows.

I've had 6 months of sleeping with no shouty cats but as soon as we open a window it's all over.

It's my own fault, I have 4 and one of them is incredibly chatty and loves to demand attention at 4am. She found an open bedroom window a couple of days ago and was delightedly shouting outside my door at 2am.

There is no fix for this, accept your sleepless fate.

Or remove the ivy?

Stripycatz · 20/04/2023 09:15

You have no choice but to get a cat flap installed in your bedroom window. Obvs 😼

Fizbosshoes · 20/04/2023 09:18

We have a tiny unfriendly cat with the loudest whingiest meow.
She wails loudly to be let in. We have to open the door and retreat to another room as she needs space. Lots of space. Then once in she wails some more....but usually she doesn't want food and she doesn't want petting (no eye contact and no petting or fussing, ideally we will keep to the 2m social distancing rules) she just needs to let everyone know she's in!

Oojamaflipp · 20/04/2023 09:19

I voted YABU, but only because you haven't posted a picture of the cat (extra points for sad face and pawing at the window). Very poor form.

tornmum101 · 20/04/2023 06:25

these replies have made me smile this morning after the sh*tshow that is my thread!

We are only here to serve cats!

I'm sorry you are getting such a hard time over there. Glad this has made you smile 😊 don't let the fuckers get you down!

OP I would let him in every time but I fold like a cheap tent from Argos when it comes to cats. I would grumble about it all day though!

Taq · 20/04/2023 06:40

He’s stopped his meowing and precarious one-paw sad tapping. He’s just looking at me now.

I think I’m in love with your cat.

brilliant!!!

Boughtitdownthemarket · 20/04/2023 10:13

Is he neutered? He sounds like he needs it. Might soften his cough.

Fansandblankets · 20/04/2023 10:15

I agree with a PP, get rid of the ivy.

This made me laugh though, cats are A holes.

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 20/04/2023 07:55

My stupid cat likes to leap from the top of the car onto the porch roof and then onto DS's windowsill and beg to be let in. I don't know why he still does it, because the pitched porch roof tiles are covered in car claw marks where he's launched himself onto it and slid back down again and ended up hanging off the guttering by his front paws (yes that is as hilarioust o watch as it sounds). And also because DS has been at university for a year so it's not like anyone actually lets him in anymore. Oh and he also has a cat flap.

You mean DS hasn’t given up his studies so he can come home and let the cat in? How some people can be so cruel and selfish is beyond me..

AlltheFs · 20/04/2023 10:19

You are his slave. Do as he demands, it’s your duty. Tut tut 😉

NameChangingIsMySuperPower · 20/04/2023 10:36

My cat fell from my first floor window once (poked her head out from the inside). She landed on her feet, with no harm done, she did still still stick her head out quite often, but never fell off again. She was probably about 4 or 5 years at the time, and lived till she was about 10, and sadly got hit by a car.

Mirabai · 20/04/2023 10:48

The Ivy would already be down round my way.

TheShellBeach · 20/04/2023 10:51

I'm also dreading the warmer weather because all the neighborhood cats will get in, as well as ours.
And why are there no cat pix on this thread?

To let my fucking cat take his chances??

DYING! 🤣

thequeenoftarts · 20/04/2023 11:05

Cats are bi polar arseholes, I have a love hate relationship with mine. Giggling here at some of the stories

maximist · 20/04/2023 11:06

My cats can't get to my bedroom window, thankfully, but one has realised that he can get to my neighbours' window ledge.... It could be worse, at least it's your own cat waking you up 😂

DdraigGoch · 20/04/2023 11:11

RJnomore1 · 20/04/2023 07:10

ive seen a cat fall from a third floor window sill, land on its feet, create a racket to be let back in the close door and be absolutely fine.

I’d let him take his chances 😁

A cat could fall off a skyscraper and land softly. The dangerous falls are the ones so short that they don't have time to turn the right way around.

Sinamin · 20/04/2023 11:14

Taq · 20/04/2023 07:48

If he is injured and it looks expensive I’ll just smother him with a pillow. Or drive him to an expensive looking house and roll him out.

Vet! Tchah!

LMFAO here!

I know you don't mean it but I love your style!

fliptopbin · 20/04/2023 11:17

Know your place ,hooman, and accept your life of servitude to your feline overlords.

QuinkWashable · 20/04/2023 11:18

You need to be better at pretending to be asleep..

boycat does this if he hears movement from me in the morning, he'll come in my room yelling (no point shutting the door - that just makes it worse) and stand on me, kneading a bit, then leans in very close to my face to smell my breath/goad me into admitting I'm awake.

YOU MUST NOT MOVE OR RESPOND!

If you do you've lost. I have to stay solidly 'asleep' and he'll give up and will curl up on the bed waiting for me to wake up instead.
