A plea to dog-owners

Please keep boisterous dogs on leads if you have no intention on controlling their behaviour

When walking in woodland with my 10 year old DS this morning pre school (because we were ridiculously early), a fully grown and very boisterous Labrador jumped fully up and put his paws on my sons upper chest. very exited dog, barking, more jumping. Before I can react, my sons runs into my arms and the dog continues to jump, now onto my son’s back.

At this stage the owner comes round the corner, the dog rubs off and I try to call out that this really is not acceptable. Calmly. I get a perfunctory sorry, the dog is being ignored, bounds back, jumps up my legs and manages to “Kiss me on the mouth”. Again, a perfunctory sorry and the owner walks away. Is this acceptable? (At this point I lost my calm 😞and shouted after them as I was upset at being brushed aside, no swear words though )
No attempt to reign in/ educate the dog?

It has taken me probably 5 years to get my son comfortable around dogs, had this happened only 2 years ago he would have been in an all out panic.

so my plea is to please please keep large dogs in sight if they have the tendency to jump, or at least try to mitigate situations that are difficult for others.

Animal cruelty is a huge red flag for abuse and cruelty towards people.

I'll answer on behalf of the person with dog derangement syndrome...yes they absolutely DO think that their dog matters more than you do.
And now I'm off to scatter chocolate covered raisons all over the local walks😀

I hope your comment is in jest. I have a friend who lost her dog suddenly and traumatically due to poisoned food (vet reckoned anti-freeze) that some utter cunt had left in a park where many dogs are walked.

WaitingWaitingWaitingWaitingWaiting · 21/04/2023 18:17

The one that annoys me is when they shout ‘it’s ok, they’re friendly’ like that helps. I like to shout back- I’m fucking not so get your damn dog under control before I kick it. They usually get pissy, and I’ve never actually kicked a dog, but I’ve used my legs to block them from mine (well behaved and on a leash!). Bloody entitled assholes

Sockloon · 21/04/2023 18:20

OP there is no such thing as a dog owner, according to every dog owner you speak too there not the bad ones. Just look at this thread every single one claims its the other dog owner 😂

There like cyclists there all saints 😅

100%

Clear red flags from @Thesharkradar shows and if I were here partner, I'd be off and wanting full custody of any children.

The post about the bloke that killed the spider with glee, had everyone saying red flag, utter cunt, don't get involved.

Nothing different should be said about women like @Thesharkradar!

Nasty vile words!

Saucery · 21/04/2023 18:26

I hope Sockloon never comes across the cyclists I see with their dogs running alongside them.
They’d froth themselves into a little frenzy of HaTe Grin Grin

And with their cats oh their shoulders! 😂!

If all the 10s of 1000s of dog owners and cyclists around, @Sockloon actually thinks the minute number of posters on here are bad dog owners or cyclists.

Unless of course she's one of the ridiculous people who think every dog owner and cyclists are bad GrinGrin

nomoredriving · 21/04/2023 18:57

@Sockloon if we assume there are 160 dog owners on this thread and assume 10,000,000 dog owners in the UK then the percentage of the dog owners on this thread is 0.000016% of the dog owning population.

So it's quite possible we are good dog owners?

daffodilandtulip · 21/04/2023 19:44

I went out yesterday with three toddlers and throughout the day, we had SIX different encounters with untrained offlead dogs and not one apology. Plenty of "he's friendly" and "he just wants to say hello" as it's jumping into the pushchair or taking the picnic. How do I know it's friendly? Is it friendly to everyone or is it about to eat my toddlers face?!

Sockloon · 21/04/2023 19:49

Haha all the loon dog owner quoting me are obviously licra clad pooch owners who does wouldn't hur a fly yes right 🤣

pd339 · 21/04/2023 19:51

Dogs in public places should either be on leads or muzzled.

Oh gosh how amusing I'm guessing your one of those dog owners putting shit in a plastic bag then dropping or throwing the bag. Sounds about the level your at how clever 🤣

nomoredriving · 21/04/2023 20:02

@Sockloon do you mean you're?

I think I've got the measure of your intelligence and therefore your opinions can be filed under .... not very intelligent, therefore discard.

Why? My dog is neither. She had good recall, and shows no interest in people or other dogs.
Men are a greater threat than dogs are. Lets muzzle them, yes?

Thesharkradar · 21/04/2023 20:15

sorry I've not been back to the thread, busy making dog treats in the kitchen!

faffadoodledo · 22/04/2023 08:39

Gosh @XenoBitch that is an obvious analogy now I think if it. I get far more twitchy along a lonely path if a man walks towards me than a dog.
Although less twitchy if I have my dog with me.

HikingforScenery · 13/10/2023 19:05

Bless you, describing how patient you were, not swearing, etc.
Yoir poor boy.
Urgh the dog’s lips on yours? i’d have lost it 😡

Chezgb · 12/11/2023 16:16

These people also have a way of trying to turn the blame on you, even to the extent of accusing you of cruelty etc. There's no reasoning with them, they normally ignore you, just talk over you or won't listen. I can't see it getting an better either. It's not only dog owners, it's motorists, cyclists... people in all walks of life. Not everyone is like it, but getting out and about should be enjoyed but it's like you've got to preempt stress around every corner 🤷‍♀️

Chezgb · 12/11/2023 16:21

The owners should be held accountable, not the dogs.

Chezgb · 12/11/2023 16:29

Some dog owners will say these things because they don't want to be held accountable. Most don't realise that what you've described is a criminal offence. I normally say that I can judge myself whether a dog is friendly, but as I ve previously mentioned they will carry on talking.. seemingly to themselves, talk over you or ignore you. Their single minded mentality is what they want and everyone else is unimportant. Narcissistic dog owner syndrome.

eardefender · 12/11/2023 16:41

When I had two small well behaved dogs I just gave in and lead walked them around the streets rather than, beach, park we had the South Downs way literally on our doorstep. I just didn’t want to get into a nasty experience with a stranger when I just wanted a nice walk with my dogs. I got so sick of it. I even had to go to the minor injuries unit once for a bite and the owner got a caution. I don’t live in a dodgy area at all but too many dog owners have no clue.
