Why would they be doing it? Do you think it could mean they're worried they might need to use it soon?

No

mrsbyers · 19/04/2023 12:16

Not worried at all , when in the states I’ve received them for severe weather alerts etc and think it’s a brilliant way of reaching people quickly. It’s just building up the infrastructure developed quickly during covid times and it was welcomed then too

Hbh17 · 19/04/2023 12:16

No. It is nonsense and we should all permanently disable all alerts.

wobytide · 19/04/2023 12:22

If you don't keep the alerts you won't find out which Panem District you've been allocated to.....

cocksstrideintheevening · 19/04/2023 12:23

Er, no.

PuddlesPityParty · 19/04/2023 12:31

Loads of countries already have it, they’re just trying to catch up 🤭

Think about it. This government can't do ANYTHING quickly! It's been years setting this up. This isn't something they've dashed off in a week. It's been planned for years. It's been used in other countries for years. Stop being paranoid.

GoodChat · 19/04/2023 12:33

They're just making sure it works

Noorandapples · 19/04/2023 12:35

Overnight flood alerts, terrorist activity, a missing child with description in your area, it could be very useful and save a life

ThreeblackCats · 19/04/2023 12:35

It was wanted by the government after the 2007 floods.

It’s to warn people away from areas where road traffic accidents, bridges down, terrorists attacks etc.
It wasn’t possible in the uk until enough people had 4g or 5G smart phones because it was not compatible with all telephone networks before.

If it helps my husband was involved in the project before he moved on to finance.

Quit trying to make it a conspiracy, it’s not sinister, it’s emergency planning.

Needmorelego · 19/04/2023 12:37

They are testing the system to make sure it works.
A system that many many other countries have had for years.
That's all.

Christmascracker0 · 19/04/2023 12:37

It’s hardly a conspiracy, loads of countries have it in place already.

DoraSpenlow · 19/04/2023 12:38

Lots of countries have them. Found it really useful when travelling in the US. Got one about a large landslide which meant we could avoid that route. Also had one
about a child abduction giving details about the make, colour and registration of the vehicle the police were looking for. You only get local alerts not the whole country.

I think it could be really useful. Not worried about it at all.

Heroicallyfound · 19/04/2023 12:38

It’s been talked about for decades. Was I Italy tested in 2 areas about 10 years ago. It’s worked successfully in other countries. Read up on it (start with the Wikipedia article) and put yourself in leadership shoes - what would you do to look after your country if you were in charge? I’m sure that will take away all your worry.

TheyIndeed · 19/04/2023 12:38

God bless you for thinking the government is that organised in a crisis, when actually it's just taken years to work up a very old idea Grin

Heroicallyfound · 19/04/2023 12:38

*was initially tested

PeacefulPottering · 19/04/2023 12:39

We need the alerts to remind ourselves not to fall for the next bullshit control system they come up with.

Malarandras · 19/04/2023 12:40

It’s just a system test. You can turn it off if you like. It’s not a big deal, don’t worry about it.

RiktheButler · 19/04/2023 12:42

How many more threads will we have before Sunday? It's a modern warning system, they have it all over the world. It's not weird, it's not sinister, it's not controlling.

It's just a warning system

usedtobeasizeten · 19/04/2023 12:42

No.

Idontgiveashitanymore · 19/04/2023 12:43

Switch it off if it others you that much. It’s for our own good. Just technology catching up with us .

Purplehyena · 19/04/2023 12:47

It’s just a modern version of an air raid system, and we’re miles behind most countries on this. I’m the first to criticise this shit show of a government but this isn’t sinister, if anything it just highlights how bloody slow and inefficient the government is.

AnotherBritInTheUSA · 19/04/2023 12:55

I live in the US and we have the same alert for severe weather warnings. It’s nothing to be worried about

LauderSyme · 19/04/2023 13:01

No, I am not worried about any imminent threat.

But I do think that test day is likely to generate a lot of anguish and conflict due to all the secret mobile phones that are going to be discovered because their owners have failed to turn them off.

JenniferBooth · 19/04/2023 13:09

I dont trust the Government not to abuse this.
