Why would they be doing it? Do you think it could mean they're worried they might need to use it soon?

Have you ever read the Relationships board?

This basically.

We do seem to get a large number of serve weather warnings and then find it's really not that bad at all and in previous decades wouldn't really have registered as anything much.

I do also worry kids won't turn phones off or airplane mode and choose silent when left in bags outside exam rooms - which could cause issues especially if alert is nothing much for them - so will have to remember to remind off or on airplane mode.

They should be off anyway

Topseyt123 · 19/04/2023 14:03

I'm not remotely worried about it and nor should you be. There is no conspiracy here.

It's just the testing of a new alert system that so much of the rest of the world already has, and which the UK should have caught up with years ago. It's not any more mysterious than that. Sorry if that disappoints all of the budding conspiracy theorists out there!

as I just said on another thread so much has been made of these ‘secret mobiles’ but the only people I have ever known to have secret mobiles have been people having affairs and criminals?

And do people having affairs not matter?

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 19/04/2023 14:05

As someone who works on the Tube in London, this will be very useful getting the message out if something horrible were to happen. Not long ago London kept having terrorism threats and events. It will aid my job enormously.

I've lived in Germany for the last 30 years, and until this year, the system they used was a siren warning, which they test once a month in the city where I live. The siren goes off at a certain time so you know it's working. For a few years there's also been an app you can download to get alerts, but not everyone has it.

This year, they also introduced a cell broadcast system. They tested it last year, and tested it again this March; now it's up and working.

On Saturday an unexploded bomb was found in the city. (This happens at regular intervals even so long after WW2.) They used the cell broadcast system to organise a local evacuation for a few hours. Seems to have been useful.

It's good to know that if there's, say, a flood, you'll be alerted even if you don't happen to look at the news that day. This is the latest, modern means of getting an alert.

Thank you!

Like what? If you're having affair you should just tell that person not have a siren out you so you risked being lamped

toomuchlaundry · 19/04/2023 14:07

Surely most people who have secret phones don’t keep them on all the time

bellinisurge · 19/04/2023 14:08

I'm a prepper. It's what it says on the tin. The system already exists on your phone. They are just testing it. It's not a big deal.

toomuchlaundry · 19/04/2023 14:10

Do people in other countries with this alert system not have affairs!!

pag2020 · 19/04/2023 14:01

Christ, why is everyone getting their knickers in a twist about this? Grow up

I know, tin hat brigade are having a field day over it!

This is normal and a good thing.

RagingWoke · 19/04/2023 14:10

It's a test of a system that's in place all over the world. It should have been 'fyi public there'll be a test' and we all move on with our lives. Instead we've got ridiculous fear mongering, conspiracy theories and dramatics.
It will likely hardly be used in reality and the test is a non event. What do you actually think will happen?

Yes for a small number of people who may have secret phones for whatever reason it could be a problem if it goes off. But if you have one, chances are you're smart enough to turn the notification off or have seen advice.

All the people shooting about being tracked or having 'unwanted software' on their phones, I hate to break it to you but if you have a smart phone you're being tracked in some way.

Well yes exactly. I wonder if they just deactivate the system on their secret phones or keep them turned off?

So cunning, those cheaters 😂

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 19/04/2023 14:12

There have always been alert systems since the beginning of civilization. Lighting beacons, ringing church bells, air raid warnings, TV newsflashes this is another one using the technology we have now.

Pixiedust1234 · 19/04/2023 14:12

Go see your GP for your anxiety.

Other countries have had this type of system for years and use it.

GOW56 · 19/04/2023 14:12

Why would they be doing it? Do you think it could mean they're worried they might need to use it soon?
Why not now? It's a good idea to have it as many other countries do. It's just to alert people to floods or other emergency situations that may occur.
There is no sinister reason why it's now. If we are going to have it it has to be introduced sometime!

I imagine they do. Would be interesting to see the divorce stars in the year or two after it was introduced

Yeah and just people yelling FIRE!

Mauhea · 19/04/2023 14:15

I'm honestly really confused by the apparent hysteria from some groups of individuals. I've seen one or two newspapers trotting out the whole 'doomsday cometh, terrifying the nation with super scary telephone alert' rhetoric (which quite frankly I think is disgusting). Is the British public really so fragile that the're completely destabilised by a test of an alert which will be used once in a blue moon, if ever?

JenniferBooth · 19/04/2023 14:15

If we didnt have a Government that have behaved the way they have over the last three years there would be more public trust in this

You reap what you sow!!

Dotjones · 19/04/2023 14:16

It's nothing to be concerned about. The system may never be used, it's like buying a fire extinguisher for your home - the best outcome is that you never need to use it. All this test is for is to see how well a message could be spread in the event it was urgently required.

It's true that this system is not perfect and will not save every life in every circumstance. But if there is a terrorist attack or a nuclear attack, some people who receive a message and act on it may survive. For a lot of people it will make no difference, they are either too close to the attack to survive or so far away it makes no difference. Some people will be on the cusp though and a warning may help.

Is it worth it? Depends on your point of view. If a theoretical attack would kill 10 million people if there is no warning and "only" kill 9.75 million if there is, I'd say 250,000 lives is worth it. Hell, for the hassle of sending a few messages out, it's probably worth it if the system saves a hundred lives.
