So my son's friend vomited last night and his Min sent him to school as normal. AIBU that I think that's really bad? I'm worried now that he's spread his germs to my son Angry

It might not be a bug, it could be something they ate.

Coraline353 · 18/04/2023 18:29

How do you know? My son's friend told him he was sick on Saturday night and was at school on Monday. He didn't - he's an anxious child who had a wobble about coming to a birthday party on Sunday so he told birthday child he'd been sick. I know it wasn't true because his mother told me the truth but it's easier for the child to explain sickness.

Lcb123 · 18/04/2023 18:31

It’s probably very common, you just don’t know..

Makinglists · 18/04/2023 18:34

Context is everything- if he'd stuffed in his tea than ran round the house/went on a trampoline/ car journey and puked I would assume nothing wrong (apart from eating too much) and would assume he'd go to school next day. If he had a headache/felt grotty then yes he should be off.

Sotired22 · 18/04/2023 18:35

Agree with pp I think it probably happens all the time, and that’s why stomach bugs spread round school so fast. People are selfish unfortunately 🙄hope you avoid it

MagpieSong · 18/04/2023 18:35

He could have an intolerance or be on prophylaxis antibiotics that cause vomiting or be an anxious child or any number of other things? If it was a bug it would be less likely to be a single episode, though not impossible by any means. Assumedly the parent knows why the child was sick and made a decision based on that.

BeautifulWar · 18/04/2023 18:36

Depends why he was sick. Some children are sick after coughing or have a weak gag reflex when it comes to food the don't like.

He can't be that sick if he's able to go to school

ALongHardWinter · 18/04/2023 18:37

Depends on why he was sick. It's not just stomach bugs that cause vomiting, migraines can make you sick.

Jojobees · 18/04/2023 18:37

A one off vomit is unlikely to be a bug, and if he’s well enough to be at school it’s also unlikely to be a bug.

Hugasauras · 18/04/2023 18:39

Honestly depends. DD has been sick randomly once and then been absolutely fine after, so I probably wouldn't keep her off for 48 hours just for that. If it was clear it was a bug then I would for sure. I think you can usually tell quite quickly though if it's a bug or if it was just a one-off ate too much/was running around/coughed too hard/got a bit car sick thing.

The last time my son had a sickness bug he was only sick once. I then caught it the day after and DH the day after me so it's possible.

SparkyBlue · 18/04/2023 18:41

It depends on what happened. It might not be a bug.

NotAHouse · 18/04/2023 18:42

Schools fine parents for kids being off school and people wonder why they're sent in so frequently.

Blort · 18/04/2023 18:44

My son is has "been sick twice" - it means he coughed and spat into a sink. He's 10 and is always trying to skive off school Grin

YourTruthorMine · 18/04/2023 18:45

Plenty of bugs cause one off vomiting, my DC had loads when they were younger.

Same - DS was sick a single time with norovirus, DH and I caught it off him and were horrendously ill.

jaysusmickeyandjoseph · 18/04/2023 18:46

Apparently he felt ill at after school club yesterday, then went home and puked once. He was apparently ok at school today, ate lunch, played etc.

Appreciate it could have been all kinds of things but I have a fear of vomit and so this sort of thing sets off my anxiety.

VincentVaguer · 18/04/2023 18:47

Omg. Why do you even care? You do realise every kid your ds comes into contact with could be harbouring all kinds of disease?

May09Bump · 18/04/2023 18:47

We've witnessed similar over the years - those with "100%" attendance awards being the worst offenders (caveat - in our class before a bun fight starts) . In the next day after being sick , calpolled up if feverish - you can't do anything about it. Sometimes I'm more sympathetic - maybe they can't take time of work as risk losing job, etc. But as years go on and you know more about circumstances, and if they just can't be bother keeping them at home we distance ourselves from families like this, as unless there is a serious circumstance the child shouldn't be in school. I truly feel sorry for the child.

ladydimitrescu · 18/04/2023 18:48

My daughter will be sick if she coughs enough, even if a bit of water goes down the wrong way. Her gag reflex is something else - if I kept her off everytime she was a tiny bit sick she'd never be there.

Ok, well that's your issue and not his.

StrugglingWeight · 18/04/2023 18:49

Being sick once can still be a bug, and unless a very obvious cause like was in the car and has known car sickness should be kept off (obvious cause not food poisoning as that is still transmissable)

If everyone just stayed at home when they were sick children would probably be sick a hell of a lot lwss

It's his parents responsibility to keep him off school if he's been sick, he was clearly unwell.

This. I've got one who seems to catch everything going and we got a letter warning us about a visit from the council because their attendance dipped below a certain %. Guess what we'll be doing next time?

StrugglingWeight · 18/04/2023 18:51

The selfish people who clearly send their children in when sick are coming on...
