Insomnia and of all the articles I could read I saw this one.

Hundreds possibly thousands of women are taking Avon and above to court over developing cancer directly from asbestos in talc. Face powders.
How do we know if our ones are toxic?

How are you defining 'random'?

1- sunscreen, researched to high scientific standards, medically tested, needed for a reason.

2-"beauty " products - pure fad, no standard scientific basis or quality research behind any of it, just a load of totally random ingredients chosen according to current trends, smeared onto faces for no reason at all

Do you sit down on upholstered chairs and sofas? Do you walk across carpets? Do you ever eat processed food, or food that is not organic? Ever eat out of anything that has been contained in plastic? Do you use swimming pools? Do you run a car? Have you ever decorated your home? Shall I go on?

yes, yes, no,

wouldn't touch organic food with a barge pole - there's another silly faddy myth that does far more harm than good -

yes, yes, no, no,

what on earth is your point?

Do I take handfuls of random chemicals and smear them all over my skin for no reason? NO

maddening · 18/04/2023 17:50

When did talc have asbestos in? Surely we were all talced as babies?

Nimbostratus100 · 18/04/2023 17:51

Naunet · 18/04/2023 13:50

Yeah it’s all stupid women’s fault for being groomed into thinking they need to wear make up, so it’s their own fault if there’s asbestos in them and they end up with cancer…🙄
Don’t be an idiot. The huge pharma company selling products with asbestos in is the one at fault here, not women who buy them. Do you want to blame mothers for using J&J talc on their baby too?

no woman NEEDS to be putting on make up, ever.

If they choose to, then they are choosing to pay money to corporations set up to con them, and thats up to them, but please lets not pretend women have no choice.

Water is a chemical. Blueberries have upwards of 15 chemicals in each one.
Stop spouting utter bollocks.

and what is your point? So what? Why does water being a chemical and blueberries being made of chemicals make it ok to smear a totally random concoction of chemicals all over your skin for no reason? carry on, if you want to, but dont complain about the consequences

Nimbostratus100 · 18/04/2023 17:57

personally, I wouldnt be sticking blueberries in my eyes either....

This woman does. I don’t like frightening small children.

I'd assumed you'd have intelligence enough to grasp my point, but apparently not. My point is that there are chemicals (many of them unpleasant/carcinogenic) everywhere. Whether you smear them on your skin or not is irrelevant; you are exposed to them regardless. You sound very naive, and patronising but without the prop of knowledge or intelligence.

The particular poster you’ve quoted (the problem with having a noticeable username is that it means people notice your username) has on various threads in the past year claimed to be a teacher of many decades, a geneticist, a virologist, a carer, a lawyer, a nursery worker, a nanny, staff in a homelessness shelter and a midwife - so I think it’s pretty clear they’re vair vair intelligent and knowledgeable indeed 😉

AdoraBell · 18/04/2023 18:19

I have an App, Yuka, it scans barcodes and gives info on the ingredients/contents. I discovered the sunblock I was using due to my solar keratosis has a potential carcinogen.

J&J agreed terms, because in the US it's easier than a protracted lawsuit. As far as I know, no studies actually found a firm link between the talc use and ovarian cancer. On the other hand they also couldn't confirm there wasn't, hence the court settlement. This will be a similar legal case.

It kind of smacks of Big Tobacco though doesn't it?

For years they muddied the water with 'we can't prove it' but they knew ....

You understand that they have to confirm to confirm to safety regulations? They cant just chuck anything 'random' into products

https://www.thefactsabout.co.uk/Cosmetic-laws-regulations#:~:text=In%20the%20UK%2C%20the%20manufacture,Safety%20and%20Metrology%20Statutory%20Instrument).

What are the cosmetic laws and regulations?

Cosmetic products in the UK have to be safe to use by law. Not complying with the strict laws and regulations that are in place can not only put people at risk,

I have terrible redness on my face and wear concealer. I also look pale, anemic so I like to put blusher on.

Shoot me.

Who are you to say that wearing make up or moisturisers is for no reason? You can’t speak for anyone but yourself

raffegiraffe · 18/04/2023 12:40

I thought the court case was that the talc could have contained asbestos, not that it actually harmed anyone. I don't think that has been proven, just speculated for ovarian cancer. I wouldn't worry at all about face powder

This is wrong. I have name changed for this. I'm in the U.K, and I currently have a 6 year long case against a brand that is listed on this thread which was proven via biopsies and lab tests to cause my peritoneal mesothelioma.

I live in the midlands.

I can't say which brand it is. But most of the brands listed here had / have asbestos in.

Asbestos has an incubation period of about 15-40+ years. In the 80s and 90s cosmetics were riddled with asbestos. It's not so much about products containing it now, but many products contained it decades ago and people are now getting sick because of it.
Ovarian cancer, Peritoneal Mesothelioma and pleural mesothelioma are the main cancers caused by asbestos containing products.

I’m sorry to hear this Charlotteeeee.

Thanks for posting this thread. I’ve just checked my EL loose powder foundation (it’s pretty old as I use it once every few months if that) and after having to search a fair bit online - there is no ingredient list on the tub - talc is the main ingredient! They don’t make it any longer - I’ll be very upset if this is due to the talc in it and they haven’t been open about it!

I’d heard of the risk with talc and have therefore never used the baby powder but hadn’t thought to check makeup products.

Does anyone have a list of products which might be involved or a link to one?

AnotherDayandAnotherName · 16/09/2023 12:45

Just read this article and feel so sorry for the lady involved and now worried I have been exposed. I have been a big fan and regular user of powder foundation, blusher, bronzer and especially loose EL powder since the early 90s until I could no longer get it.

I am feeling very sad that this is happening. I have also googled the woman in Devon who has been eating talcum powder for 15 years. Maybe the talc contamination was in the 80’s and 90’s. Trying to make sense of it.

Anyone else feeling worried?

Charlotteeeee · 16/09/2023 20:34

@AnotherDayandAnotherName

Most of the contamination was in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s. It's awful!

BeethovenNinth · 17/09/2023 06:55

It’s incredibly sad and there companies have been absolute bastards

by the way, there is still talc in a lot of products. For example, it’s in a UK brand in one of those factory shops. It’s in rituals new mama up range. It’s in Benefit. It’s even in bloody calcium supplements made by a very well known uk brand.

I suspect they will say it’s “purified” talc but that seems to me like we don’t know as the fibres can be so small.

I have - as most people will have - consumed it for years. Most people seem ok.

but this is why I trust no one with my health as time after time there is a case and it’s been known for decades there has been an issue and it’s been hushed up.
