Is Rishi Sunak utterly thick?

noblegiraffe · 17/04/2023 21:07

Today he actually went ahead and announced his plans for everyone studying maths till 18.

And all everyone commenting on this on the news or social media has been saying today is "but this is mad because there aren't enough maths teachers to teach the qualifications we already have".

And teachers including maths teachers, are going on strike again next week because the government refuses to pay them properly. The government also failed to meet its maths teacher trainee recruitment target last year and will again this year.

This announcement just gives everyone the wonderful opportunity to point these governmental failings again and again.

Why the fuck would anyone with any political sense announce a policy that cannot happen and gives everyone the opportunity to point out that it can't happen because the government are shit?

Just why?

"Tory bot" whatever.

I come at it from the perspective of someone working on tech in a field where current "AI" is directly replacing human beings, as in they are losing their jobs now. Our entire economy is based in areas that will be affected: The change I describe is a necessity not a fun day-dream. The reason HMG and therefore Mr Sunak know this is because they have been told by people from my industry and others.

Yeah, I'm a bit down on the idea we need the maths teachers to do it. The maths dept at the comprehensive school I went to were frauds who sat taking money and cost generations of less able students their o levels and gcses. I work in a maths-related field now DESPITE them and then had to watch the same kind of maths teachers abscond during lockdown, very nearly costing my kids their exams. The reason I know they aren't necessary is because 2 generations of my family have been cut adrift by them.

ArnoldBee · 17/04/2023 22:39

I'm no maths genius but our family seems to live on half the income my friends family does and we are relatively happy and go on holidays. They seem to spend theirs on credit card interest. Studying maths until 18 wouldn't have taught me how to be frugal. It's basic common sense!

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/04/2023 22:41

I don’t even know where to start with some of these notions….

Out of interest where is the funding coming from for providing the tech for everyone to learn online via these AMAZING and EXCELLENT resources?!?

"abscond"?

Just exactly what did they do?

GlassBunion · 17/04/2023 22:44

It's such an odd decision.

Teach quadratic equations to children who struggle to do long division, by maths teachers who don't actually exist.

Such a helpful way of getting young people to actually fail an A'level .

I was put into a class to sit maths O'level a year early. I got a C. I applied to resit it. I was refused. I was forced to sit the OA maths paper as a further O level at Advanced level.
The paper was the A'level pure maths paper.

I didn't even understand it.
Not one bit of it.

I got 'unclassified.'

That's what'll happen.

Rather than relying on teachers, what about YouTube ? If people have games consoles and the internet they can watch YouTube and learn to improve their knowledge,

Yes I know that's not everyone but the opportunity is there for those that can

In which case we won't need it taught in school for an extra two years.

Sunak is talking rubbish so the Tory media can draw attention from his corruption. The Tories are going to wring every penny out of this country before they're out.Angry

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/04/2023 22:51

What about those that don’t have? We have a fairly high percentage of our families who share a phone or tablet. Many don’t have internet and have restricted data.

Are you seriously suggesting that Sunak’s plan is to have students learning maths, at home, via YouTube until 18?

With the way technology is, most knowledge and understanding can be learned via online.

Except during lockdown the world was going to hell in a handcart because kids were not in school according to MN….

But will the 16/17/18yos want to learn?

My point, is for the majority that have access to a games consoles, eg Xbox , playstation have the YouTube app, and can therefore use it to study different subjects including maths etc,

For those that have the desire the option is there

A small percentage will, the rest it's, party, music, relationships ect

Messyhair321 · 17/04/2023 22:54

Yep he's really irritating & doesn't have a clue about what's going on in the country. No idea what he's talking about. It's like he's taken his favourite hobby & announced everyone must do it too.

If people want to learn then they will one way or another, abe Lincoln self taught, Ben Franklin, ect and many others

I was just going to say that. It's very easy to have something playing online but be doing something else at the same time. Or randomly clicking answers in an app without bothering to work it out.

Additionally, will uninterested 16 years old have the secure understanding needed to learn by themselves online? Seems doubtful.

The other option, using charity shops etc to get encyclopedia, or maths books when available etc, or borrowing from the local library

That's the thing with society, we need a complete restructure of societies values

Or how about having a proper teacher. 🙄🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Endlesssummer2022 · 17/04/2023 22:58

Some uberlibertarian Tory donor tech firm is probably writing ‘AI teacher’ code as we speak. Kids will be steamed into low, mid, high ability classes and the AI will deliver the lessons and mark the tests. Voila, no more teachers and their pesky demands for a living wage and decent conditions. Maths will be the first proof of concept.

Much quicker, faster , and more efficient for everyone to homeschool themselves and then use the teacher for confirming their knowledge

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/04/2023 23:01

@Hawkins003 but this isn’t about people leaning ‘if they want’? What a bizarre perspective.

You know full well they are not suggesting people learn maths until 18 at home on a games console if they want to 🤣🤣🤣

For the record if you don’t have internet then you can’t access YouTube. Still. Even on a games console. Which you’re unlikely to have if you can’t afford internet….

Hercisback · 17/04/2023 23:02

This option is already available. There's plenty of free online maths resources.

Look at the hordes of teenagers using them to improve their maths Hmm.
