I’m 5ft 2 and 11 stone, looking to lose weight discreetly without making a big fuss about it. I know the formula is eat less move more but I just wondered if anyone had any tips of little changes they made that made a difference? I’ve started cutting out dessert and stopping snacking between meals but are there any other subtle tweaks I can make that might help? Don’t want to make a big thing of it or I’ll be forced to join the calorie counting brigade at work and also don’t want to talk about diets at home, dd is possibly asd and funny with food. Thank you xx

I Brush my teeth with dc at 7:30. I’m so lazy that I can’t be bothered to brush them again so I’m not tempted eat after they are in bed.

Increase protein to equivalent of a gram per pound of your weight each day. Increase fibre to over 25g daily.

You won't have much more space for nutritionally poor food if you're prioritising these macros.

Lift weights a few times a week
Drink lots of water
Walk as much as possible

So would the weight in grams of protein decrease as your weight drops?

and a total of 25g of fibre per day regardless?

thanks in advance?

WhatToDo2023 · 17/04/2023 21:26

don't allow myself any snacking whatsoever. 3 meals a day, slightly delayed breakfast so I don't get too hungry later. All meals healthy and full of veg.

I can't allow myself any snacks at all. Once I have a bite of something, it's all downhill. If someone brings cake in the office, i have absolutely none. Not a bit or a small piece.

MavisMcMinty · 17/04/2023 22:34

It makes me so sad when I see people talking about “not allowing” themselves food. Just eat what you want, but only when you’re actually hungry.

Scottishlanza · 17/04/2023 22:47

@MavisMcMinty what you and a lot of other people don’t get is that some people are constantly hungry. I could eat all day every day and I absolutely have to not allow myself to do this. A lot of obese people have affected the hormone in the body that regulates hunger and once that happens they find it increasingly difficult to control their eating. The trick is to not put the weight on in the first place but for a lot of us it’s too late for that

WhatToDo2023 · 18/04/2023 02:52

@MavisMcMinty When someone is trying to lose weight, they have to actually eat less than they need. It means they will be hungry, that's how calorie deficit works, and OP is asking for best way to manage a temporary situation. So fuck off with your condescending shite.

SkyandSurf · 18/04/2023 03:29

I eat a healthy breakfast, then nothing except carrot sticks, apples etc all day. I'll eat a normal dinner and then no snacking afterwards. I drink nothing but water during the day.

I also try to move more, walking and Pilates mostly so nothing crazy.

If I'm invited to a lunch or it's someone's birthday I still participate but will usually have a small piece of cake etc.

If I notice my weight creeping up, I do this until I am back on track. It's much easier to lose (or not gain) the first couple of kilos than if you wait and have to deal with some more significant weight.

autienotnaughti · 18/04/2023 05:05

I go meat free mon-Fri. Bulk meals out with lentils/pulses and lots of veg. Snacks are small handful of nuts or few grapes. No sugar in tea/coffee. Skimmed milk. Alcohol on Saturday only. I do calorie count and aim for 1500 a day. Also I do 2/3 exercise classes a week plus walk dog 90 min a day. I've been steadily losing 1-2lb a week since jan.

Makes sense to think about it "over time" @bellac11 thanks. I suppose I'm just thinking with my greedy tummy 'all the things I could eat, I'd just have to cram it into 6 hours!'.
When I started calorie counting I struggled because I used my calories up on nutritionally rubbish food- I soon learned my lesson. I suppose its the same thing!

It's not just about what you eat tho, the whole point of IF is during fasting time you burn fat rather than the food/energy. That's why they say you can eat anything (within reason). To be fair that bit hasn't been fully proven but as you see from this thread so many of us fast and get good results. I only do 3 days a week now to maintain and enjoy alcohol and a treat on weekends

I've never been hungry,I eat more now doing SW. You don't have to be hungry to lose weight.

3 boxes of Milk Tray then? 😉

MorrisZapp · 18/04/2023 08:26

Don't know if this is a hack as such but last night I put my earbuds in, cranked up my best tunes, and did a freestyle 'body attack' type workout in my kitchen. It wasn't a pretty sight but it was brilliant fun and Fitbit says I burned 568 calories in an hour. My face was still red after my shower.

If you have a vague idea how to structure a workout you don't need a gym, gym clothes, childcare or even shoes 😂 I prefer barefoot on a foam mat.

Go to bed early to avoid snacking worked for me.

I’m about to start doing this - waiting for bedroom renovation work to be finished and when we move back in I’ll be heading for bed early. Evening snacking is my problem.

Kolakalia · 18/04/2023 08:42

Download a calorie counting app, input every single thing you eat and drink, stick to your calorie target, and it'll fall off. There's no secret cheat unfortunately!

Little tips that help somewhat: drink a lot of water, drink a glass before you eat anything. And I find eating lots of little servings of low calorie things mentally easier than trying to stick to three 400cal meals per day without any snacks. For example for lunch today I have a couple sausages, a mini cheese, an orange, a banana, and some olives. All together it's around 400cal but feels like a feast because there are loads of different things to eat. Also works for me to take five or six small snacks to eat through the day instead of a big meal (but I'm lucky I can eat when I want at work).

Diet fizzy drinks are filling too.

Lost 2.5st a while back, down to BMI 20 and kept it off.

Sorry, should have explained better, the protein target should be your target weight if you are currently overweight go for 0.6/7g for pound. So it shouldn't change that much. I also don't think you have to be too strict. I have days I don't manage it, but if it's your focus then it keeps everything else in check.

And yes, the 25g fibre is a minimum and doesn't change. The more you can get in the better as protein can make you a bit constipated.

Margot78 · 18/04/2023 11:27

Thank you all, some good tips to try. I don’t think fasting would suit me, I need to eat regularly or I feel light headed and shaky and can’t focus. But some of the other tips- increasing ratio of protein and veg over carbs, drinking more water, keeping a food diary, planning the day’s food a bit more all feel doable. Thank you all!

I plan the following day's food the night before and input it into myfitnesspal when losing weight. Psychologically I'm way more likely to stick to it than just taking the day as it comes and choosing what and how much to eat based on how I feel in the moment!

Me too! Currently doing tomorrows 🤣

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 18/04/2023 13:10

I’m in a similar position. I’ve just started to cut out bread, almost completely as I eat a lot of bread and I’m going to limit carbs as much as I can. I’ve also stopped drinking alcohol almost completely. I’m lucky, I like salad. Good luck op.

I really enjoy it! It feel nice to wind up the day with getting everything planned for the following day. Saves time in the morning and before mealtimes too :)

Love this thread; very helpful.

Oysterbabe · 18/04/2023 20:35

I've been reading some stuff by the Glucose Goddess. Her thing is before your meal, eat a portion of fibrous vegetables. It's supposed to reduce the blood sugar spike from the carb element of the meal and help you stay full longer. There are some studies. Eating more vegetables can only be a good thing and it does help fill you up so you don't overeat the higher calorie part of the meal.

So I can eat every minute I'm awake then? Cool.

Something that worked well for me was to exercise of an evening as it reduced the desire to snack. I do a hundred skips a couple of times a week if my back allows and do Yoga or an exercise band work out from you tube on other nights.
