Grim

Anyone else sick of seeing this word. So embarrassingly overused by posters thinking they are edgy.

OP posts:
ShirleyPhallus · 16/04/2023 21:31

I see it all the time on MN and it’s used to describe the tiniest things which are either a little bit unsavoury or just not to the taste of MN.

overused and incorrectly used most of the time imo

PearPartridge · 16/04/2023 21:33

When people say on mumsnet "I would take a very dim view" of something, I imagine a headmistress from the 1950s looking over half moon specs.

Somebodiesmother · 16/04/2023 21:33

It's not remotely edgy. It's used by posters who are incredibly conservative and buttoned up. It's pretty much the opposite of edgy.

Skankylanky · 16/04/2023 21:34

How is it edgy? It's not new, if anything it's old

We were saying grim at school in 1999.

While we're at it we should bring back "swivel".

Ravageur · 16/04/2023 21:34

I agree op

CanofCant · 16/04/2023 21:35

I don't mind 'grim', it's not as overused as 'utterly'.

vilepig · 16/04/2023 21:35

I quite like it
Vile is overused... she says, with vile in her username...

Fuming annoys me more than grim and vile though

Fuming or fumming?

fizzybubblywater · 16/04/2023 21:37

Eh. It’s just a word, I don’t think it indicates a desire to be “edgy” at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

Alwayswonderedwhy · 16/04/2023 21:40

I sometimes use grim to describe situations or the weather. I can't imagine anyone thinking it's edgy. What an odd thing to say.

IKnowItsNotMine · 16/04/2023 21:43

It’s my new favourite word !
New variation- Grimbo ‘someone who displays grim tendencies’

Love it !

LemonLymanDotCom · 16/04/2023 22:00

Have been using it for years with friends. Don’t see the problem with it. Am not trying to be edgy. Am not edgy at all, it’s just common parlance in my circle of friends. To describe things that are, well, grim!

Topee · 16/04/2023 22:18

I use it quite a lot irl. I’m not edgy at all.

Twisting · 16/04/2023 22:26

WouldYouLikeYourMuffinButtered · 16/04/2023 21:16

Grim is ok but I dislike the word Crass.

Crass makes me think of Hyacinth Bucket types. I never, ever hear it in real life.

Agree with pp that 'grim' has a 90s vibe and probably just tells you the age of the poster.

Unless it's the fantasy novel genre 'Grimdark'.

XenoBitch · 16/04/2023 22:27

Well, tell us what word you think should be used instead.

Twisting · 16/04/2023 22:29

Actually, if we're on words that annoy us:
'Super'.

Are you a 13 yr old American cheerleader c1994? Then no, everything does not need to be pre modified by fucking 'super'.
Your dinner is not 'super yummy'.
Your trainers are not 'super cool'.
Your walk through the woods was not 'super lush'. Fuck off with your super.*

*unless you're a superhero.

AintNobodyHateMeBetter · 16/04/2023 22:44

Yep. Hate it with a passion on here.

Scented toilet roll? Grim.
Lazy husband? Grim.
Don't wash the bedsheets every day? Grim.

Just fuck off with the fucking grim.

LakieLady · 16/04/2023 22:59

GuitarStringScars · 16/04/2023 21:17

It’s used fairly commonly where I live.

There was a very frail, elderly woman in the village shop who called the weather grim recently. She was just wet and cold though, she didn’t appear like she thought she was edgy. 😅

I think it's in pretty common use, too.

My late DM used to use "grim" quite a lot. She'd 90 if she was still alive, and certainly wasn't "edgy" (although she was a little eccentric).

TheHoover · 16/04/2023 23:03

YABU - IIRC it first became a thing 25 or so years ago

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2023 23:03

I quite like it as a word. It's like the best combination of grey and grimey and has unhealthy, oozing connotations.

A great, descriptive word.

Kanaloa · 16/04/2023 23:04

It’s used for really silly situation on here. You eat chicken nuggets? Yuck, grim! Shower every second day? Grim! Live in Manchester? GRIM!

It is always associated to me with the type of poster who says ‘mate’ a lot and makes silly comments along the lines of ‘I’d have been out with my baseball bat/would have punched him in the head’ etc. The type who tries to look tough but you just know they’re not.

Invadersmustdie · 16/04/2023 23:08

I say bleak to describe things that are grim. I'm old, northern and working class so don't think it'll catch on on here.

Oh god! Swivel! Haha- what a blast from the past-

Haven’t heard anyone say that for years!

Agree- I really don’t think anyone saying ‘grim’ is trying to be edgy

Invadersmustdie · 16/04/2023 23:09

I say bleak instead of grim that was meant to say. Lord knows what happened with that sentence.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2023 23:12

Ooh, Bleak is a good word @Invadersmustdie. Grey, heavy, Dickensian.
