To ask if anyone else has insane hayfever?

Honestly, never had anything like thisI heard vaguely that England was having really high pollen levels a week or so ago. From about Thursday, I have been waking up in the night sneezing like a cartoon character, my nose is runny, my eyes are runny, I look like Iike I've got a cold.

I had some fenofexawotsit for skin rashes last summer, it wasn't doing much so I tried cetrizine instead. That's better but it seems to wear off after a few hours.

Is there something else wrong or is anyone else having this? Thanks. I'm actually sleeping in the other room tonight in case I do have a cold rather than hayfever but it doesn't feel like a cold.

Yes, mine has been very bad as well this past week or so - "very high" pollen counts here in the East at the moment. It was so bad the other day that I did a COVID test (thankfully negative) because my nose was streaming constantly and no antihistamines seemed to be touching it.

I have started taking 1x 120mg fexofenadine this year when my symptoms get really bad and that seems to be helping, but I have also had to take a few (I know it's only meant to be once daily but I can't be constantly eye-rubbing, violently sneezing and nose streaming all day long at work in my particular job) ceterizine 10mg in order to just try and ease my symptoms somewhat, and some days even that hasn't touched it! I have a feeling it might end up being quite a bad year for hayfever sufferers unfortunately.

Are you taking your hayfever tablets daily? It's recomended to take them daily a few weeks before symptoms usually begin and stay daily after that, it works more effectively that way at keeping the levels of histamine in your body lower, this reducing symptoms, in theory...

Lovelydovey · 16/04/2023 16:02

Yep it’s mental. Fexofenadine in the morning, piriton at night, nasal spray and eye drops multiple times a day too. And I keep the bedroom windows shut and use purifier in there too….

Beeinalily · 16/04/2023 16:02

Asthma and eczema going bonkers too, presumably also because of the pollen. It's making my life a misery 😞

BellaJuno · 16/04/2023 16:03

Pirinase nasal spray works wonders for mine, can’t praise it enough after suffering for years

GingerAle1 · 16/04/2023 16:40

Thanks everyone
sorry to hear others are suffering

I don't get hayfever every year or get it badly. I went for those pills last year because of sort of eczema, or uticaria, in the heatwave. In the years I get hayfever, cetrizine is fine.

is it okay to take this amount of stuff? i hope this doesn't go on all summer for all our sakes! I will get that nasal spray tomorrow, and look at all other suggestions.

because it's not a regular problem, I wasn't taking anything when it started so hopefully there will be an improvement after a few more days of daily meds.

i willgo to Boots tomorrow but I'm guessing they limit how much you can buy, does anyone know?

Oh we have an air purifier - I was worried about electric costs but it seems I will have to dig it out. We really only bought one bevause it can be stuffy in hot weather but I will try it and see if it helps, maybe run it at night only.

Are posters using Pirinase allergy or Pirinase hayfever? From the website it looks like either can be used for hayfever?

Yep, my nose is running like a tap and my eyes are itchy and watery. I'm taking Acrivastine 3x a day, using a nasal spray and eye drops.

I've mentally invented something like a tiny tampon to poke up my nostrils, but the strings hanging down wouldn't be a good look.

My nose is really sore from wiping it every few seconds.

Verite1 · 16/04/2023 16:49

yep mine is terrible as well. The only consolation is that I’m only allergic to tree pollen so should ease by end of May

Peridot1 · 16/04/2023 16:54

I’m normally really bad but have started a regime of Allevia tablet at night every night and a nasal spray and eye drops every morning. it really seems to be working well. I’m using Avamys nasal spray at the moment which I got from The Independent Pharmacy. It’s a prescription one I think. You fill in an online consultation and they recommend some medications. But I used the Allevia last year too with Beconase nasal spray which is OTC. That worked well. I think the key has been consistency. Not waiting till I have symptoms.

Blackalice · 16/04/2023 16:58

Yep, mine is crazy. I've done 3 LFTs this week as am carer for CEV parents and my last covid had similar symptoms to my hayfever. It's just hayfever, but it's making me so ill. I take prescription fexofenadine which is 180mg so stronger than OTC version, but it is only scratching the surface. Awful!!!

potatowhale · 16/04/2023 16:59

Yeah there's a 3 day pollon bomb

Justontherightsideofnormal · 16/04/2023 17:17

@MoonlightMemories I am prescribed 2x 180mg fexofenadine a day (360mg) eye drops and nose inhaler. I have been known to take three a day on really bad days.
May be worth asking for an increased dose. Hay fever is bloody relentless in the spring/summer isn't it 🙁

HairyKitty · 16/04/2023 17:25

Prescription dose of fexofenadine is 180 and yes it’s totally normal to need that plus eye drops plus nasal spray plus pollen filters

GingerAle1 · 16/04/2023 18:21

I hope the pollen bomb goes away soon.

thanks, seems like a lot of you go through this every summer - you have my sympathies.

Yup. Its awful

potatowhale · 16/04/2023 19:29

Oops sorry. Every so often someone helpfully suggests "local honey" but they don't realise it has to be really local and I live no where near any honey farms.

homeeddingwitch · 16/04/2023 19:39

My DC has just started with it this last week. Best thing for her is the air purifier. We run it on ‘sleep mode’ in her room all night too. It has been a god send.

Madamecastafiore · 16/04/2023 19:44

Don't dry any washing outside and wash your hair as soon as you come into the house along with all the meds and an air filter. We changed to a Felix Sebo bagged vacuum cleaner and that seemed to help too.

My son has asthma that is triggered by pollen, along with the sneezing, streaming eyes and itchy membranes in nose, mouth and ears. The showering for him is the most effective thing.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 16/04/2023 19:47

Yep it’s been vile. I’ve been googling that Kumalog jab thing today and weighing up if it’s worth it.

Nothing worse than being at work and feeling that horrible drip come down your nose while talking to a customer.

The headaches have been something else too.

Prettypaisleyslippers · 16/04/2023 19:50

try nasal spray plus Clarityn, I’ve taken Loratadine for many years but for some reason this brand works best for me. It’s half price in sainsburys at the mo.

also avoid beers/lager, Hops seem to reduce benefits of the meds.

peanutbutter00 · 16/04/2023 19:55

I had it horrendously last year. What made it worse was stopping my cetirizine daily hay fever tablet as it wasn't working and I wanted to swap to another one. I have never had such bad withdrawal symptoms before, itching under my skin for 3-4 months, there's nothing about it in the side effect warning in the packet but looking online many other people had the same withdrawal itching. So be careful taking the same hay fever tablet long term

That's good to know that I can up the dose to that if I need to - I am just taking it over the counter, not prescribed, so I wasn't quite sure how much of it I could take if the 120mg wasn't doing it for me. Yes I hate this time of the year!

And working in a hospital it's not really great if you're sneezing and having a nose dripping all over the place, not practical if you're doing physical intimate care with people and it doesn't look very professional.

fetchacloth · 16/04/2023 20:41

My hay-fever is bad currently as the pollen count is high.
I've been taking a daily anti histamine tablet and Beconase nasal spray which seem to work OK.
