To notice the 10% benefit rise and know I'm on the bones of my ass

I know it's tiny. But when you are properly skint after everything you notice this tiny rise will mean some strawberries for the kids or some fresh milk instead of uht. This is for the people who complain they are poor or feeling the pinch when they really have no idea. And define their poverty as not going on holidays....

For one childcare costs aren’t included in the benefit cap and those on UC get a significant payment towards their childcare costs. So the costs aren’t the same.

I said commuting not childcare.

justanotherdrama · 16/04/2023 18:35

A 10% rose in benefits is well needed

However I work and I'd like a 10% rise too!

I'm not being rude here I know people need benefits but yet again the workers are shafted

Unless any pay increase is above the rate of inflation it doesn’t increase your spending power…

Changing a job, getting a profesional qualification, working two jobs can increase spending power.

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 16/04/2023 18:37

Including the col payments I think its fair

@SpringHasSprungAtLast

How can that be

I just did a calculation based upon a family I know

5 kids
2 on DLA
One adult on PIP
(None enhanced rate)
Council house
No savings

£844 per week, made up from...

£536 UC
£76 carers allowance
£125 Scottish child payment
£87 child benefit
£19 council tax benefit

They are affected by the benefits cap according to the calculation but you also have to add on...

£95 DLA MRC/LRM
£128 DLA HRC/LRM
£95PIP standard for both

Carers Allowance is deducted from UC. It is classified as income.

I wouldn't call it nosy. My question to you was on the back of your statement. Which was "those on UC get a significant amount of UC towards their childcare costs"

How do you know other people's salaries? Because you need to know this to know what percent of childcare you get help with IF any. I just wondered how you knew?

chiefschiefschiefs · 16/04/2023 18:41

It makes a difference to our household. I didn't even realise it was increasing until I read this thread so I'm quite happy tbh.

It's the difference between me getting my prescription and not. 😊 (I'm currently sorting out the pre payment thingy!)

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/04/2023 18:41

Albiboba · 16/04/2023 18:18

Also the comment I was replying to was discussing the benefit cap. If you’re receiving maximum UC and housing benefit then you aren’t working full time so it’s totally disingenuous to compare someone receiving the maximum amount of benefits with working full time. No one hitting the cap is working full time.

I agree you can't compare.

In general those unfortunate enough to have to rely on benefits are far worse off than those in work.

Why are you separating "workers" and those who claim benefits? You do know not everyone who receives benefits is unemployed

Over 8 million claim Child Benefit in the UK and there are 1.3 million unemployed people in the UK

40% of people on universal credit are in employment

Many claimants work too.

Because it’s still out of line for benefits to increase by more than 10% when half that has been offered to public sector workers like nurses.
Even if someone is working and receiving UC it’s still classed as two separate incomes. For one to raise and not the other when they are all public sector just isn’t logical.

Mangolist · 16/04/2023 18:44

Albiboba · 16/04/2023 18:21

@Mangolist i can’t see a single comment that is nasty though? The only thing I can think you’re referring to is those saying 10% feels about right and to have an increase higher than that would be totally out of line with what public sector workers are getting. I don’t think that’s nasty.

It's the posts like 'some people getting £35000 a year' which, although it has now been explained, is simply set to rile others up. I wouldn't wish the necessity for two lots of DLA and a full adult PIP award on anyone, no matter how much money they are getting.
It's the same on every benefits thread. This weird envy of people who are on benefits. Awful

Yes and to have to care for disabled children with high needs so you can't work or be part of a pension for your old age...

I don't understand why anyone would envy that.

And the deduction will have been made in the calculation.

I always thought that was the case but the calculator said otherwise.

There will be plenty of nurses claiming UC too especially with a family.

And yet they never think to simply ditch their awful, cruel jobs and live the high life on UC.
Wonder why that might be…

Cakeandcardio · 16/04/2023 18:53

It's hard being so skint OP. I was the child in a home where my family had very little. We only had some stuff because my gran helped out. I hope you do feel it makes some difference to you but the reality is that benefits are too low. ❤

Jabiru · 16/04/2023 18:54

It can’t be long before benefits and nurses pay is roughly comparable anyway.

Princessbananahamock · 16/04/2023 18:54

Any increase to benefits child or otherwise have been wiped out due to the increase of basic necessities going up quite highly. As an example willow butter (cheaper than shops own!) was £1 not so long ago now £1.50 I notice how much a basic shop has increased £20 is now £25 plus. Which I feel is quite unbelievable on a tight budget you do notice the price of things.

MayThe4th · 16/04/2023 18:58

Honestly all the competitive threads about who has the least are tedious.

Ultimately none of us ever feel as if we have enough money because we generally live to our means.

A 10% rise in benefits is a huge rise compared to what most of us who are on a salary will get. And plenty of people bring home far less on a salary than people get in benefits.

Everyone is feeling the pinch right now. And everyone is having to decide where to make cuts and where to spend less.

I earn just over £20k a year, am not entitled to any benefits, meanwhile my mortgage has been going up month on month, food bills are rising, and unlike people on benefits, a chunk of my salary is paid out in tax, something which doesn’t happen if you’re on benefits.

But people obviously have their own needs and spends and we all have to make the best of it.

Albiboba · 16/04/2023 19:03

Flowersun6 · 16/04/2023 18:52

Even more of a reason for nurses pay rise to be at least as high as benefits are being raised by, rather than only benefits increasing more than 10% to make up for it.

OnlyTheBravest · 16/04/2023 19:05

What I do not understand is why do prices have to go up every year. There has to be a point were you can not increase prices anymore, if you do not want to increase the pay/benefits that people receive.
I do wonder if we are approaching the end of capitalism and are closer to a universal basic income for the majority of workers.

Letspovertyplayagain · 16/04/2023 19:05

Love the poster saying my kids shouldn't have strawberries! Why not? Yes they go quickly but they eating and enjoyed. Also ration to 3 a day and they do stretch ( I like them but pretend I don't do the kids don't realise I am missing out) When they are reduced, wonky or on offer. Some children won't eat fruit, im lucky. Working on the vegetables though. Have tried frozen ones and they didn't like the texture. Would that same poster make a smug remark that their kids only eat organic pomegranate seeds with Brussel sprouts and organic cocoa nibs yoghurt .... And we aren't all trying hard enough to give our kids a varied diet ...
