To notice the 10% benefit rise and know I'm on the bones of my ass

I know it's tiny. But when you are properly skint after everything you notice this tiny rise will mean some strawberries for the kids or some fresh milk instead of uht. This is for the people who complain they are poor or feeling the pinch when they really have no idea. And define their poverty as not going on holidays....

@Gingerkittykat

The benefit cap doesn't apply to everyone though.

When you consider what that actually equates to £7-12 (on average) a week, it is. There was a very good post on here about the middle class being outraged because they are feeling the pinch and having to give up hobbies. Whereas those on the bottom are seen as ok even if they are giving up food. There's posters on here who have no idea how a large amount of people are living hand to mouth.

Why shouldn’t they be outraged? ‘Middle class’ jobs tend to be ones which require skill and qualifications, and carry more stress than the ‘working class’ jobs. So it stands to reason their quality of life should reflect this.

10% is considerably more than the pay rise I got. How much more do you think the taxpayer should give you, bearing in mind that most of them didn’t get a 10% increase already. Every penny you get is a penny taken from someone else. It’s not free money.

@Willyoujustbequiet

Depends on the yearly value of the benefits really

And why they're being claimed

Some people on benefits will be getting the equivalent of 35k

How can that be so?

@SpringHasSprungAtLast

How can that be

I just did a calculation based upon a family I know

5 kids
2 on DLA
One adult on PIP
(None enhanced rate)
Council house
No savings

£844 per week, made up from...

£536 UC
£76 carers allowance
£125 Scottish child payment
£87 child benefit
£19 council tax benefit

They are affected by the benefits cap according to the calculation but you also have to add on...

£95 DLA MRC/LRM
£128 DLA HRC/LRM
£95PIP standard for both

I've never mentioned child benefit. You must have me mixed up.

No you didn’t but the thread is about child benefit.

No it’s not. It’s about benefits in general not just child benefit.

The OP in every comment has been discussing her child benefit amount. Hence why she thinks it’s a small increase because 10% of a small amount is still a small amount.

Can you show me your calculations and tell me who these people are, please?

The benefit cap is still 1,666.67 outside London and 1,835.00 inside London for a family, but most people receive less than that. £35000 after tax and NI is £2286 per month.

Do you not see that you’ve actually more money with that benefit cap be 2286 per month when you also have to factor in childcare, commuting and things like school meals and prescriptions etc on top?
The new London cap is 2110, the salary only gives 186 more and that’s before you consider repaying a student loan or the fact that there’s auto-enrolment on pension.

Becgoz7 · 16/04/2023 18:00

It wouldn't cover the increase in rent and council tax plus the price of everything has gone up.

My (adult) son is disabled and I get carers allowance for him and he gets PIP. I'm not sure if those will be increased?

All benefits are going up by 10.1â„….

You're making the mistake of presuming they aren't/weren't tax payers themselves.

Some may have contributed far more than you have.

Why are you presuming that some people on benefits aren't paying some of these same costs?

Half of UC claimants work. Do they have no commuting costs etc?

Ninjasan · 16/04/2023 18:15

Albiboba · 16/04/2023 14:20

I dunno why everyone is taking such an issue with my comment.
10% is really not a small increase. It’s a reasonable increase roughly in line with inflation.
They are hardly going to increase benefit amounts by 20% while refusing to engage in discussions about nurses pay.

I agree. I wish I had 10% payrise. I don't have 6 figure salary. I had 3%. How much would be enough for benefits increase? 20%, 30%?

For one childcare costs aren’t included in the benefit cap and those on UC get a significant payment towards their childcare costs. So the costs aren’t the same.

Mangolist · 16/04/2023 18:17

Jesus, I know it's a hobby here on MN; but why are some people so nasty? The vast majority of people don't want to be on benefits, what sane person would? Those awful scroungers 'coining it in' will have horrendous issues to deal with (No, your brother's ex's sister does not get full PIP, DLA and state pension and go on 30 holidays a year in a BRAND NEW pink range rover - honestly she doesn't) and bloody deserve a little bit of help, and a little bit is really all it is.
Can't those who work and earn and have a good life in comparison just stop this weird jealously, and have a think?

Albiboba · 16/04/2023 18:18

Also the comment I was replying to was discussing the benefit cap. If you’re receiving maximum UC and housing benefit then you aren’t working full time so it’s totally disingenuous to compare someone receiving the maximum amount of benefits with working full time. No one hitting the cap is working full time.

Flowersun6 · 16/04/2023 18:20

Strawberries are really expensive so if I was on a tight budget it's not even something I would put in my trolley.

Strawberries between 2 DC will be finished in 1 day. 10 percent isn't anything at all. 1 punnet of Strawberries extra for the week is hardly substantial.

Albiboba · 16/04/2023 18:21

@Mangolist i can’t see a single comment that is nasty though? The only thing I can think you’re referring to is those saying 10% feels about right and to have an increase higher than that would be totally out of line with what public sector workers are getting. I don’t think that’s nasty.

Flowersun6 · 16/04/2023 18:22

What do your weekly childcare costs add up to each week? Do you even pay for childcare currently?

Eviebeans · 16/04/2023 18:27

Unless any pay increase is above the rate of inflation it doesn’t increase your spending power…
