Willing to be shot down in flames: Ghetto Kids on BGT

I haven’t watched BGT in ages (the alarming changes in the faces of B. Tonioli and S. Cowell deserve a separate thread alone).

I watched tonight for the first time in years and saw Ghetto Kids, who were a very good dance act and have deservedly been given praise and have a moving backstory (as per) - but I found myself incredibly uncomfortable watching young kids twerking and dancing in what seemed at times quite an inappropriate way for their age. Have I morphed into Mary Whitehouse?

@justteanbiscuits yes and no - it suggests theOP is from a culture where pelvic thrusting and gyrating buttocks are seen as sexual- and who doesn't know that this is not universally the case.

No, I don't watch crap telly, but I did look at the clip of it so I could educate myself before passing judgement. Unlike you did with me.
HTH

So if you don't watch crap telly, why did you make yourself watch a clip of the act? Did someone on Twitter or a friend urge you to watch it just so that you could be outraged by it! Generally, if I think something is crap, I don't go looking for clips of it
And I am responding to your comment, not passing judgement - altho tbf, you are making doing so easy
And HTH?

Scanorspam · 17/04/2023 11:14

I haven’t seen it but I have smirked at the number of lofty, supercilious posts seeking to inform the OP that she merely lacks both culture and education.

Experts in African dance abound on MN; who’dve thunk it?

Well I thought they were great and I hope they win and I don't like BGT, or children usually.

I reckon some acts are basically booked on the promise of a golden buzzer. Possibly paid. At least travel expenses. Watch out for well polished acts which have made a long journey. Why come on BGT? Why travel all this way when you might not even get on stage in front of the judges never mind on TV, when you could go on a "got talent" closer to home!

This is pretty much spot in - these acts are scouted and flown to the UK by the show, all expenses paid. They already know they're going to get through to the live shows. Remember that American singer from last year? The one who'd been on the soundtrack to the Greatest Showman, toured extensively and had a personal fortune of around $2m, all amassed from her singing career? You really think she came all the way to the UK on the off chance of getting in front of the judges? Sure she did WinkHmm

Ffs, spot ON, not in.

Ah, bless @GingereIIa !
Never heard of netmums so your wonderfully witty barb is lost on me.
But very good. 2 housepoints

@Scanorspam

Well there is someone who is African who has spoken out in defence of these kids. I like to think that she knows what she is talking about better than someone who has never set foot in Africa before....
