Willing to be shot down in flames: Ghetto Kids on BGT

I haven’t watched BGT in ages (the alarming changes in the faces of B. Tonioli and S. Cowell deserve a separate thread alone).

I watched tonight for the first time in years and saw Ghetto Kids, who were a very good dance act and have deservedly been given praise and have a moving backstory (as per) - but I found myself incredibly uncomfortable watching young kids twerking and dancing in what seemed at times quite an inappropriate way for their age. Have I morphed into Mary Whitehouse?

Are we going to have a "do they know it's sexual... To us" song by bunch of some VIPs?🙄

Some of you really need to understand that things are different and look different outside of your pretty little english village. That wasn't sexual dance.

I'm utterly shocked by your comment. I'm even more shocked you go to elaborate a d further it by using the word slum.

Are you aware that's like me referring to your neighbourhood as a SHITHOLE because it may be not as posh as mine? I thought OP had a poor selection of wording... but good God you win the THREAD.

You have no right to be using words like slum. Have you actually visited anywhere in Africa? Some of the most humble people.... perhaps you should try it.

From a charity who ate fighting to end inequality and underdevelopment.

From the Katwe project.

From UNICEF.

I've just watched it and it was fantastic! I normally don't like children twerking but I didn't see twerking here, just normal Ugandan/African dance with the whole body. One or two little moves with the waist and booty but that is different from the "sexy" twerking people do. I didn't see "sexy" or sexual here just upbeat, catchy music and dance.

Love their uniform too! They looked beautiful.

Why would you well up at someone dancing....?

Why wouldn't she well up at a little girl dancing? It was cute and adorable.

The crotch grab and thrust at the beginning was inappropriate for their ages, imo.

That seemed to me like the typical Michael Jackson move that every performer and impersonator - adult and child - starts with or does at some point. Hence the recognisable scream once they did it. It's almost become seen as non-sexual, just Michael Jackson move.

Something incredibly irritating about someone not reading my posts, arguing with me, then patronisingly telling me how 'humble' some of my people are.

Sorry what?

Nothing sexual at all. The kids were adorable and can really move. The tiny girl who comes in at the end was 5?! Wow! Hope they do brilliantly and I don’t even watch it!

justanotherdrama · 16/04/2023 23:19

We're sat there watching it wondering how if they came from a slum how they afforded coming over, passports, flights, hotels etc.....

peechie · 16/04/2023 23:27

@UnicornBoom slum is not derogatory, it's a well used term. No idea why anyone is offended. I've seen it with my own eyes, too: family who live in grand house right next to an 'informal settlement'.

Why people are want to pretend like slums don't exist? I feel like that's making those people a bit invisible, if anything.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 23:33

Just seen it - I thought they were fantastic and the ‘whining’ is just part of African dance. Amazing and a well deserved golden buzzer

In some communities people pull everything together to get one from their own somewhere.
However, these kids are already performing and are self funded now.
Coming from a slum doesn't have to mean they literally flew to BGT from a slum....

It’s very important that we teach poor Black African people to describe themselves in ways which are acceptable to the British middle classes.

😂😂, quite. Wouldn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.

Aslanplustwo · 17/04/2023 06:28

They are just dancing - I thought they were great and can't see anything wrong with it. They looked joyful as well.

Mars27 · 15/04/2023 23:19

I know this kind of dance/moves it's common in developing countries (think also about Samba in Brazil) but I don't like it. Children shouldn't dance like that. Like I said, it's common for them and they probably see no malice in that but it does make me feel uncomfortable

Why not make an effort to understand how cultures express themselves through art and dance before you all get on your pearl-clutching bandwagon.
I've seen young girls dressed up and made up like tiny trollops just to go to a birthday party in this country, so perhaps take a look in the cultural mirror before you start having the vapours because a child has wiggled its bottom

I imagine they have an agent and promoters and sponsors just like most touring dance troops.

ApplesandPares · 15/04/2023 23:21

Aside from that, I’m not sure the word ‘ghetto’ was a great choice.

why? That is where they are from
Ffs; their choice of name

Newestname002 · 16/04/2023 07:53

Yes I was surprised at this as, in an earlier series, there'd been a "farting man" and all the panel - especially Simon - had been disgusted, saying how could he possibly put an act like this in front of the Queen... 🌹

i would be very surprised if they were to perform for the Queen...

Bromptoncocktail37 · 17/04/2023 07:00

GingereIIa · 16/04/2023 09:25

Doesn't always map well in another country though. I personally didn't like it

no doubt you changed channel after you decided you didn't like it. Or did you watch the whole thing just so you could express your horror on a forum?

You are attempting a wind-up are you not?

Namechangeforthis88 · 17/04/2023 07:19

I reckon some acts are basically booked on the promise of a golden buzzer. Possibly paid. At least travel expenses. Watch out for well polished acts which have made a long journey. Why come on BGT? Why travel all this way when you might not even get on stage in front of the judges never mind on TV, when you could go on a "got talent" closer to home!

No, I don't watch crap telly, but I did look at the clip of it so I could educate myself before passing judgement. Unlike you did with me.

I think you seeing this as sexual says more about you than it does about them.
