To wonder how people can afford a takeaway for a family?

We haven't had a takeaway for a while and I was thinking about ordering one for the family as a treat tonight. I decided not to once I worked out the price, I just couldn't justify paying 1/3 of my weekly groceries budget, £30 on a curry for 4.
When did you last have a takeaway?
How much did it cost and how many did it feed?

We have one once a month it's usually about £40. We just send the kids out barefoot to be able to afford it.

Porthia · 15/04/2023 21:00

We had Chinese last night which was £65 for 2 adults and 2 kids.

we have 1 or 2 a month.

As to how people afford it, I guess you could ask how people afford anything. For some people that would be nothing while for others it’s prohibitively expensive.

Personally we think of it as a bit of a treat as it is pricey. When DH was unemployed for a while we stopped having them but now he has a job again I’m enjoying being able to do it! I am, however, also terrible
at budgeting and spend a fortune on groceries each week.

StampOnTheGround · 15/04/2023 21:01

£25/£30 for 2 here, you're very lucky it's that cheap for 4

JeepersCreeperrs · 15/04/2023 21:02

McDonald’s. £15 for 4.

NettleTea · 15/04/2023 21:03

we had a chinese this evening, first one in months. 33 for 3 of us, and leftovers for tomorrow

They probably can't. But see it as a cost of living and get in with it and don't spend as much on other things like shoes for their kids, so they're running round in shitty £12 trainers from ShoeZone that fall apart after 8 weeks.

Yes because the only people who get takeaways are awful people 🙄

FancyFanny · 15/04/2023 21:03

To answer your OP: people can afford take-aways because they earn a good salary and not everyone is living on a low budget.

Chatterboxy · 15/04/2023 21:05

Indian takeaway for two £25, once a month as a treat. Still cheaper than going out which we rarely do these days, we used to go out weekly but not since lockdown. Can’t justify the cost anymore.

FrazzledFirefly · 15/04/2023 21:06

I've already posted upthread what we spend. We also eat out.

I also <whispers> buy my children shoe zone shoes. The horror and shame.

I also buy them Clarks shoes and branded trainers.

Sudeko · 15/04/2023 21:06

All my British friends rave about their homemade curries. I have yet to taste one I would count as decent unless their home cultural cuisine in centered on curries and similar. I suppose that a good curry is probably one you like and with spicing levels you find tolerable.

AlwaysGinPlease · 15/04/2023 21:08

What a baffling question. Same as how afford anything, holidays, nails, hair, clothes. They can afford it, because not everyone is struggling.

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 15/04/2023 21:09

We have takeaway about once a week sometimes twice and it's about 10-15 pound per person depending on takeaway

soupmaker · 15/04/2023 21:09

We had Vietnamese take away tonight. £50 for 3 mains and 3 sides between 2 adults, 1 teen and a greedy 10yo. Usually have take away once every two months.

I love to cook so make curries, pizzas, Chinese and Thai food at weekends. Also make home made burgers and chicken selects. Just buy frozen fries to do in the oven for at least twice the time stayed in the packet on the side, et voila McDonalds without actually going there.

How do we afford this? We both earn a decent salary.

BelindaMelinda · 15/04/2023 21:09

Pizza takeaway for 14 of us (7 adults and 7 children between ages 1-12) cos us just over £65 over Easter

£65 for pizzas for 14 people?! Err, how? Was that just a couple of slices each?

If I get a pizza take away just for our 3 dc (two teens and 6 year old) I can easily spend £20 odd and that's a cheaper pizza place, like one of the local kebab shops rather than Domino's etc.

PilshardPillToSwallow · 15/04/2023 21:10

Tonight. 4 dishes, 4 people, do our own rice.

We allocate money to spend on weekends so that came from that budget.

TorchwoodWho · 15/04/2023 21:11

We tend to spend £35-40, 2 adults and 2 young children. We have takeaway once a week, we would have it more but trying to to be lazy and cook more. 😅

PilshardPillToSwallow · 15/04/2023 21:12

@FancyFanny

Not true. I know many people with jobs over 100 grand a year, paid for houses etc and assets and they think they can't afford a takeaway.

They don't allocate or budget their money.
It's annoying to have to listen too really.

We also, shock horror, eat out every month.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 15/04/2023 21:12

Just spent £30 on curry. 2 mains, 2 rice, 2 starters, 2 naan, poppadoms etc. Does for 3 of us.

PilshardPillToSwallow · 15/04/2023 21:13

We don't earn much combined but every month every penny is allocated somewhere.
We have tons of different savings to try and cover everything!

To simply answer the question in your title - some people have more money that others - simple!
people earn all different amounts, the COL crisis isn’t affecting some people in the same way it is others.
We have takeaway once a fortnight, but only for 2 people and spend £30 (indian food).

Well exactly. Half the threads on MN assume that the OP's own experiences and/or circumstances are shared by everyone

Thesearmsofmine · 15/04/2023 21:13

I think £30 for 4 is pretty good value!
Our last family takeaway was £35 for 5 of us, that was a pasta main, a calzone, 3 kids menus starter(melon or soup) and main pizza/pasta) from a local Italian restaurant.

What’s wrong with cheap shoes anyway. Our kids destroy all school shoes with frightening speed so I’ve just started getting Asda ones and replacing more often or getting boots, which seem much hardier and survive to be passed down.

Paperexcelandpens · 15/04/2023 21:14

Thars very cheap to me. When we have an Indian, it usually costs around £60-£70 for 4 people.
